Grade 7 Up --Built on an interesting premise, this is a novel of near-fatal attraction. Nicole, a high school sophomore in southern California, is swept off her feet by Michael. While she is flattered by his attention, and friends consider her lucky to have such a generous boyfriend, Nicole finds his possessiveness uncomfortable. Then she meets Shane, to whom she is attracted and who asks her for a date. Michael, unwilling to let her go, begins a campaign to bribe her with gifts, and when that fails, to spy on her. His obsession escalates to the degree that Nicole seeks help from her father and others, but to no avail. YAs will be drawn into and understand Nicole's dilemma--wanting to remain Michael's friend, wishing to date other boys. The characters are realistically portrayed with the exception of Michael's father; he's such an incredibly insensitive, bossy blowhard that he's hard to believe. I thought Desperate Pursuit was a very good book. It is intense and everything you're afraid a relationship can turn into. I highly recomend this book.
