As a future parent, I found Dr. Paterno's book, Desperately Seeking Parents: Why Your Child Needs a Parent in Charge and How to Become One, extremely beneficial. However, you do not need to be a new parent to gain helpful knowledge from this book. Dr. Paterno guides you through the life stages of your children in a way that many psychologists have not done before, as a parent himself! Dr. Paterno is not afraid to reference his own experience as a parent as well as share case studies from some of his most troubled and most realistic families in his private practice. He has a sense of humor that speaks to a large audience and he gives practical advice with the rational behind it. The book also includes some worksheets that parents and children can use to set rules and expectations for their unique family ("The Family Constitution"). Dr. Paterno emphasizes appropriate boundaries, a family hierarchy and effective discipline that actually works. He encourages love, positive attention, and a warm environment for the whole family, all the while making sure that you stay a parent in charge.
