Desperately Sick,
By wanna be dancin (Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Desperation Medicine (Paperback)
After fighting for four years with every kind of diagnosis from chronic fatigue syndrome, Fibro, MS, hypogammaglobulemnia and even Lyme disease, I just knew there had to be more ! More research, more informed physicians, more hope. I drove over 3500 miles round trip to see Dr. Shoemaker and I have finally found my hope...I started reading this book on my trip home and was not able to put it down. I found the style of writing to be very refreshing for what could be a research intense topic. I never felt intimidated by medical jargon and found Dr. Shoemakers explainations of his research to make perfect sense. He was telling me my symptoms before I even told him and we are discovering that I've been carrying around a coagulase negative staph infection for at least four years. And yet not one of the other doctors, even the Mayo Clinic bothered to do the testing required to find a cause for my pain and illness. Dr. Shoemaker was troubled by my lab results and felt that by all logic, it was surprising that I was still alive. But now we have a plan of action and I know that although it won't be easy, there is at least logic explainations for illnesses that other doctors choose to ignore...Shame on them. I wish I could buy every doctor in America this book by Dr. Shoemaker......... A MUST BUY for anyone who has unexplainable symptoms........ Peg

Covers more than just Lyme disease,

This review is from: Desperation Medicine (Paperback)
Although the book rambles somewhat in a story telling way, it covers useful information about a treatment option that many people with Lyme, CFS, FM, MCS, ADHD, Sick Building Syndrome and many other disorders that Shoemaker classifies as neurotoxin mediated illnesses may benefit from. I wish the book covered in more detail the exact methods and testing procedures that he uses, because from information I've learned elsewhere he does more than just test with the Contrast Sensitivity Test and give cholestyramine to his patients. But the book is a good starting point to learn about his theories.

This was it ....,
By A reader (Holland, MI) - See all my reviews

After 4 years of being sick and being told it was "all in my head" I finally became totally unable to work full time as a teacher. I read this book this summer, traveled more than half way across the country to meet with Dr. Shoemaker and am now on the way to better health. In an very specific type of MRI that ANY of my previous 17 doctors could have ordered, Dr. Shoemaker was able to tell me WHY I had such neurological and cognitive issues. Biotoxin illness. I am now undergoing treatment and while am still very ill, can see that I am able to keep more information in my head. ANYONE who deals with a chronic "invisible" illness such as CFS MUST read this book. Yes, it's a bit "story telling" but we're talking about a country doctor from Pocomoke, MD who turned his "quiet" country doctor life into a life's calling when he realized his OWN community was falling victim to some mysterious illness. I found the book to be very informative scientifically ... and meeting Dr. Shoemaker? Unbelieveable. He listens. He asks YOU how YOU feel. He doesn't tell you. No detail is too small. I've never met a doctor who read my entire medical history BEFORE I even walked into his office. In a word? Brilliant.

Can you stand it? More evidence that we are poisoning ourselves. The Government, Industry, FDA and legal system do NOT have our backs, folks. Ritchie C Shoemaker has a background in Molecular Biology, an MD, and a cadre of really brilliant friends. To top it off he's witty, humorous and a good writer. I have two other books written by him and I have become a fan. I can open these books to any page, start reading, and just get sucked in. It's that interesting. Some of the science goes right over my head but what I am learning is enough to help me connect the dots. If you have been told that you have Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome this book is a must read.

Intriguing, Smart - A Dedicated Dr Vs the System,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Desperation Medicine (Paperback)
This is a must read for anyone suffering long term chronic fatigue. Presents science and a great story. Simple and easy language that allows readers of most levels to understand the science behind the story. Although there are many causes of CFS & FME this book may hold one of the answers to getting over the debilitating condition for many sufferers. It also gives us another powerful reason to hold our elected officials and bureaucrats to account for their often selfish actions that hurt many & subvert the truth!
