Motets are non-liturgical sacred vocal works, not strictly related to the Mass but frequently sung between missal sessions. Their format therefore is basically different from the formal liturgical music of the ‘Mass’.
Most of the Renaissance motets are Marian, related to either the Blessed Virgin or Mary Magdalene. In writing polyphonic settings of psalms, Josquin was a pioneer.
Josquin's motets are not, however, free in form, for he invariably used some kind of compositional constraint on the process, varying from almost strictly homophonic settings with block chords and syllabic text declamation to highly ornate contrapuntal fantasias. The psalm settings which combined these extremes with the addition of rhetorical figures foreshadowed the later development of the madrigal.
Many of Josquin’s motets are for four voices, an ensemble size which had become the compositional norm around 1500, and he also was a considerable innovator in writing motets for five and six voices.
One of Josquin's two settings of De profundis clamavi (Psalm 130), both of which are often considered to be among his most significant accomplishments, is included here. Indeed, psalm settings form a large proportion of the motets of his later years.

This album was recorded for DG (Archiv) in 1999 and reissued late in the 2000s decade by the budget label Brilliant. This was in fact recorded just before Britain's Orlando Consort, a male quartet here augmented with a couple of other singers, went on to wide popularity with their recordings of sacred and secular Renaissance music.
Here the 16 Josquin motets contain some of the greatest hits of this genre.

Josquin was the central musical figure of the early Renaissance, and his sensitivity to the moods of his texts and the expressiveness of his compositions -some 20 Masses, 100 motets and 80 secular works are extant-set him apart as a pioneer in his day.

During his Italian years, the writer and humanist Angelo Poliziano, had a profound effect upon Josquin's contrapuntal style, namely the importance of shaping a composition around the text, giving the words greater impact. Prior to this, composers paid little attention to the structure of words and syllables, bending and stretching them to accommodate the melodic line. Josquin combined his mastery of setting words to music with marvelous displays of contrapuntal genius as is well demonstrated on this CD, especially in the motet UT PHOEBI. All of these settings are from Biblical or liturgical sources.

The Orlando Consort effortlessly render these motets. The musical lines are extremely clear and unmuddied; the interweaving of vocal lines shimmer tightly, mainly because the OC chooses to have only one person singing each line which allows the listener, with concentration, to follow one voice while holding onto the whole. (I personally love it when this is possible!) Thus the listener is drawn into a very active listening experience, rather than the passive washing over of sound. The six skilled performers are: Andrew Carwood, Robert Harre-Jones, Charles Daniels, Angus Smith, Don Greig and Robert Macdonald.

GRAMOPHONE: "An excellent intriguing anthology...wonderfully sung...containing some of Josquin's greatest music."

As is usual with Brilliant issues there is only a brief insert that contains the program and some information about the music; no text translation.

This CD was marketed earlier with a different cover, Jesus on the left and Mary on the right from early paintings. A reviewer bemoaned its lack of availability, but this problem presumably doesn't exist. One can find these reviews by searching for "Orlando Consort Desprez". I do have on order another of the Orlando Consort's CDs of English music and it's projected delivery is a month off.

This is beautiful music, well performed. I am not quite as enthused with the premise that one singer per voice is markedly better than more. Listening very critically to this CD, I would say "Maybe." This was specifically discussed in a review of a Brabant Ensemble CD. I listened alternately to their Phinot offering and decided in my mind at least, it's mostly a matter of taste, very subjective to say the least.

I enjoyed this CD as much as any other of this genre, but I took away a star for the way it was recorded. In about half of the tracks, the higher voices are recorded up close and at a higher volume than the lower voices, which sound as if they are in the background and with much lower volume. The varies from track to track and was distracting to me. I couldn't think of a valid reason to do this. One would think they would do all the same. That it bothered me is my problem I realize, but I wanted to note it.

At a price of $7.98, this CD is a steal, lagniappe in this case as I would be very happy to give full price for it.
