Experience art retreats without leaving your home!

There’s a community of passionate, creative souls looking to connect, and the art retreat is where is happens. In Destination Creativity, Ricë Freeman-Zachery brings the life-altering journey of the art retreat from venues all across the country straight into your hands and the comfort of your favorite chair. Maybe you’ve heard about the many different places you can go to take art workshops from a variety of talented artistic instructors, but you haven’t been sure which retreat experience is right for you. Ricë has done your homework! From Port Townsend, Washington’s Artfest to Hampton, Virginia’s Art & Soul, from rural Wisconsin to the strip of Las Vegas, from beads to quilts to painting with your hands, she has the inside scoop for you in Destination Creativity and a first-hand account of nine inspiring art retreats.

· Take five workshops right alongside Ricë with step-by-step instruction and a glimpse into the actual classroom experience.

· Hear from a variety of attendees—creative types just like you—what it is that drew them to attend their chosen event and be inspired by their life-changing stories.

· See what the retreats actually look like with plenty of atmospheric photos taken by Ricë’s favorite sidekick, Earl Zachery.

· Discover ideas for hosting creative get-togethers in your own hometown including naming your retreat, picking a venue and planning meals.

Destination Creativity is your chance to see what all of the buzz is about. Pull up a chair and take the journey.

More About the Author

Ricë writes. She has written everything from a collection of poetry for her master's thesis to newspaper articles to grouchy letters to the editor of the local newspaper and everything you can think of in between: the occasional artist bio, blog rants, how-to instructions. The current fabulous gigs include writing artist profiles for "Art Doll Quarterly," "Art Journaling," "Art Quilting Studio," "Belle Armoire," "Belle Armoire Jewelry," and "Somerset Studio"--which allows her to indulge in one of her other passions: asking nosy questions--and five books, including her newest, "Destination: Creativity, The Life-Altering Journey of the Art Retreat" and her other two most recent titles, "Creative Time and Space" and the best-selling "Living the Creative Life," all by North Light Books.

(She also taught college English, so not being able to create italics for those titles makes her a little nuts.)

She blogs at her own blog, "Notes from the Voodoo Cafe," and at "The Creative Life," her blog on her publisher's website, CreateMixedMedia.com, where you can find a new post every MWF. Her own website is voodooandzen.com, and there you can find links to interviews, talks about creativity, and a whole bunch of other amazing and fascinating stuff, including a video answering Frequently Asked Questions.

Ricë interviews artists of all kinds for podcasts at "Notes from the Voodoo Lounge," available on her blog, at CreateMixedMedia.com, and through iTunes.

Whew.

I have this book( as well as Rice's other book) and it is like an art retreat without leaving home. Full of projects to do and some helpful advice if you are going on a retreat. Lots of pictures and stories. If you have never been to workshops or art retreats you will want to go find one for you!!! She covers several different options of places to visit. I think this book would be an excellent gift for any artist. I was not paid to write this review!!!!
Great addition to your library!

This gorgeous, one-of-a-kind and inspiring book written by Ricë Freeman Zachary and photographed beautifully by Earl Zachary (husband-and-wife team) makes you feel like you are on an adventurous road trip to several festive mixed media art retreats. Being a fan of Ricë's blog ([...]) and work, I thought I would savor this new book, reading a bit at a time. Not possible! I devoured it in a single day!

I loved the genuine enthusiasm for the retreats and the energy around the retreats; the layout of the book (same size as Creative Time and Space)--as gorgeous as a fancy coffee table art book, but easy enough to hold in your hands over a cup of coffee. I loved the process photos of art projects in a retreat (for example, a step-by-step of making a bracelet). Photographs of coffee shops and architecture around the retreat centers made me feel like I was right there with the author and photographer!

This book doesn't cut corners: she takes the time to describe which hotels/dorms are either cold or don't have elevators (and which ones are more accommodating); as well as where people might go to find grocery stores instead of restaurant food; as well as packing tips (task lighting and rolling suitcases). Not quite ready to pack your bags? The book includes five detailed art project instructions from art retreat teachers featuring a variety of media, including jewelry art, drawing, and painting. Thank you, Ricë and Earl!

Beautifully presented book October 1, 2011
Format:Paperback
This book is more than I expected. The presentation is so lovely and inviting. There are so many practical as well as inspirational points that it pleases on multiple levels. I own two of Rice's other books and this newest is a treat.
