Editorial Reviews

Destination Set To Nowhere is clearly Vision Divine's most mature and well produced album up to this point! It leads the band into a new, even bigger musical dimension. Songs like The Dream Maker , Beyond The Sun And Far Away and Mermaids From Their Moons all prove this, all of which feature powerful melodies and a vivid style. Strong anthems meet heavy songs.
Destination Set To Nowhere is a melting pot, a perfect mix of all the styles Vision Divine has crossed and experimented with over the years but nevertheless kept in
their well-known style, spiced up with a futuristic twist.
The album lyrics are based on an epic saga which takes place in space, Destination Set To Nowhere is a perfectly arranged concept album, approaching the socialpolitical troubles everybody is experiencing in every-day life.
The only way to escape is to set out again, one man leaving alone - destination set to nowhere.
The Special Edition of the band's 7th studio album comes along with a bonus CD containing the best songs of Vision Divine's career, from their self titled debut album Vision Divine (1999) to their 5th studio album The 25th Hour (2007). All songs have been re-recorded in 2012, some of them for the first time with Fabio Lione on vocals, meeting the high production standard of their most recent masterpiece Destination Set To Nowhere .
As if all this wasn't enough, the band recorded an incredible cover version of Savatage's Gutter Ballet .
Without a doubt, Vision Divine's destination is set to conquer the Olympus of heavy metal!

With the return of original vocalist Fabio Lione, I was curious to see what kind of direction the band would pursue. The previous album, 9 Degrees West of the Moon, saw them branching off into a more stripped down format in terms of vocal delivery. Luppi's complex, multi-tracked harmonies were replaced with Lione's classic high-pitched vocals, and the music had taken on a more direct, riff-based approach. After Lione's brief stint with Kamelot, some fans wondered whether he would have a finger in the direction of the new album, Destination Set to Nowhere.

But he hasn't. If anything, the band continues in a similar vein, but they are emphasizing their strengths more prominently this time around. As a matter of fact, the compositions still carry a distinct Olaf Thorsen signature to them.

Based on the two-minute-long Italian lyrics spoken over ominous keyboards sounds on the album opener "S'io Fosse Foco," one can tell this is another concept album. This disc finds the band capitalizing on their strengths: writing heavy, riff-centred power metal with gripping melodies and hook-laden vocal parts. The guitar work is powerful and at its best. The solos cut through the mix effortlessly, taking on a gritty tone and melodic weight on the mid-tempo material like "The Dream Maker" and even a slightly blues-tinged vibe on the album's ballad "Message to Home." There is also a great amount of keyboard work supplementing the arrangements. This being a concept album about a group of people leaving planet Earth in search of a better world (which could be likened to Seventh Wonder's

2012’s Destination Set to Nowhere is the seventh release from Italian progressive/power metal band Vision Divine. The band, of course, features Labyrinth guitarist Olaf Thorson and power metal vocal icon Fabio Lione (Rhapsody of Fire, Angra). Vision Divine sits in that happy medium between the more progressive Labyrinth and the pure power metal of Rhapsody.

Destination Set to Nowhere is in keeping with previous Vision Divine albums, particularly 2009’s 9 Degrees West of the Moon. It’s a very melodic album, but with some good metal heaviness. It’s tempting to write this off as “just another Vision Divine album,” but that’s selling short just how good it is to hear Thorson and Lione together. Yes, it’s a “by the numbers” album, but routine for Vision Divine is still pretty special.

There are no real surprises here. If you enjoyed the previous Vision Divine albums, particularly the ones with Lione on vocals, you’re going to like Destination Set to Nowhere. If you’re new to the band but enjoy bands like Labyrinth, Vanden Plas, Kamelot and Rhapsody (either one), this makes a good introduction to Vision Divine.

Edition Notes: The physical CD release of Destination Set to Nowhere comes in a digipack and includes a bonus disc featuring a re-recorded “best of” collection as well as an impressive cover of Savatage’s “Gutter Ballet.”

Vision divine is largely under rated. I prefer their albums with Michael luppi as he doesn't have that strong accent that Fabio has. That being said this is one of Fabios better performances. I think his work with kamelot has improved his pronunciation. This is another concept album this time going towards a scifi story line. Not as good as 25th hour, Stream, or Perfect Machine but interesting enough. Check out Kamelot's new one "silverthorn" for the concept album of the year. Anyway this is definately worth getting if your are into this type of music. Pick up their back catelog as well if you haven't already. Also Michelle Luppi is now the singer for Secret Sphere "Portrait of a Dying Heart" which is quiet good as well.

I DON'T MIND TELLING ANYONE THAT I'M A HUGE OLAF THORSON FAN AND HAVE SENT HIM SOME PEDALS AND HE HAS SENT ME SOME THINGS. HE'S A NICE MAN AND EVEN A BETTER GUITARIST/SONGWRITER. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED PREVIOUS VISION DIVINE CD'S BUT IF I WERE TO TELL OLAF WHAT I FEEL ABOUT THIS, TO ME, IT'S SOUNDS RUSHED. AND I KNOW WHY AS WELL. HE GOT BACK WITH LABYRINITH TO DO A SEQUEL TO "HEAVEN'S DENIED PART I" AND THEY DID A GOOD CD BUT NOT GREAT, THEN OLAF TOURED, THEN QUIT LABYRINITH AGAIN AND ALL THE SUDDEN THERE WAS A NEW VISION DIVINE CD OUT. THAT WAS REALLY QUICK. ALSO EX-STRATOVARIUS TIMMO TOLKKI, WHO IS NOT THAT NICE OF A GUY, AND I KNOW THIS FIRSTHAND, BUT VISION DIVINE MISSED TIMMO'S PRODUCTION CAUSE OLAF PRODUCED THIS WITH THE KEYBOARD PLAYER. OLAF ALSO CHANGED GEAR AND WENT TO ENGL AMPS AND IBANEZ GUITARS, SO HE SHOULD'VE HAD A BETTER SOUND BUT IT'S NOT. A GOOD CD BUT NOT AS GOOD AS THE LAST ONE. SORRY OLAF
