3.0 out of 5 stars McGruff's album
I finally picked up this album a few days ago..and it's everything i expected it to be. Mediocre. There are however, a few jams on here(the track with Big L and Mase 'Danger Zone' being the best one). So, i guess if you're a really big fan of Big L this is worth getting.

3.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE MOST SLEPT ON MC'S IN THE GAME, March 21, 1999
This review is from: Destined to Be (Audio CD)
McGruff is one of the best mc's in the game today. although because of label conflicts(uptown), he wasn't publicized as much as his other HARLEM WORLD COUNTERPARTS. NONETHELESS DON'T SLEEP ON HIM.

Destined to Be is the first and only album released by rapper McGruff. Released on June 16, 1998 through Uptown Records, Destined to be featured production from Uptown Records president Heavy D, along with prominent hip hop producers Ty Fyffe and Warryn Campbell. The album failed to sell many copies and peaked at only 169 on the Billboard 200, though it did find better success on the R&B and Heatseekers charts. Destined to Be spawned one charting single, "Before We Start" which was a minor hit on the R&B and rap singles charts.

Herbert Brown, better known as McGruff, is an American rapper from Harlem. McGruff originally started his career as a member of the rap group, Children of the Corn, alongside Big L, Cam'ron and Mase, all of whom would go on to have successful careers in the music industry. After the group disbanded without releasing any material, McGruff made his first appearance on Big L's debut album, Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous on the tracks "8 Iz Enuff" and "Dangerzone". Eventuall, McGruff signed a deal with popular hip hop label, Uptown Records and began recording his debut album, Destined to Be. In early 1998, the album's lead single "Before We Start" became a minor hit, charting on several Billboard charts. In the Summer of 1998, Destined to Be was released but failed to sell many copies, only peaking at 169 on the Billboard 200, and McGruff was released from his contract. McGruff would make appearances with Heavy D on his album, Waterbed Hev and the Woo soundtrack, his latest appearance was on Mase's 2009 mixtape "I Do the Impossible"

5.0 out of 5 stars Herb McGruff is Legendary for REAL!! ( stays true to what he Raps) GET THIS CD!, February 14, 2009
This review is from: Destined to Be (Audio CD)
I remember when he came on the Scene he was so Fresh and Charismatic. His style is soooo different from everyone else but you can hear the harlem flavor. And the suprising this is this guy still raps the same way. Its CRAZY.

ON THIS CD MY FAVORITE SONGS (Besides ALL OF THEM) that stand out are - This is How We Do (I have this on Replay), What Part of the Game, Exquisite, Who Holds His Own, Before We Start (remix & orginal) Geahs thats almost the whole CD.

Gruff gets an extra star because Ive seen him in harlem still living what he raps on the CD, driving a nice car, ladies still runnin after him and he stays true gets his money and still walks through Harlem and shows love and Im from the Bronx saying this.

GET THIS CD if you want to get Fresh!! Heavy D put this guy in the game and He says how greatful he is a few times on some Tracks. thats Loyalty and the CD is a 10/10 you just gotta hear it for yourself, he could do no wrong on this right here!! McGruff's the TRUTH, literally!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ghetto music at its best!, March 29, 2007
This review is from: Destined to Be [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
I Heard Mcgruff trough listening to Big L, and i loved how he brought dope vers' every single time, so i had to buy this.. i dident really know what to expect so i just went ahead and copped it.
i was really suprised on how the album went down, like one of these dude's said.. its not your obvious hiphop head album, this is ghetto music at its best. Mcgruff's flow is straight fire, underground and raw! his lyrical content is just above average to me, the production was alright.. better than Big L's debut if you ask me.. anyways this is great album for any hiphop fan, also Big L fans would enjoy this.. Harlem music! Gruff's the real deal.. i'd give it 4,5 out of 5. but since you cant do that.. im'a give it a 4 mic. cause its a dope album, but not a classic tho.. PEACE

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to anybody but me, October 22, 2006
This review is from: Destined to Be (Audio CD)
McGruff is the best kept secret in rap over the last 11 years. His flow is simply flawless, just as good as the likes of Big L, Biggie, and some of the greatest rappers your ears have ever heard. "Destined to be" is truly one of rap's hidden gems. If you liked Notorious B.I.G., you will love this CD, I'd bet my life on it. Also check out both of Nature's CD's and the last 2 Masta Ace CD's for more sleeper classics. Oh yeah, and Sticky Fingaz's "Kirk Jones" is also a must have. Some of the best CD's of all time, no b.s. I'D BET MY LIFE ON ALL OF THEM!!!!!!! DON'T LET PERCEIVED NEGATIVE THOUGHTS MAKE YOU HESITATE FROM GETTING ALL THESE CD'S RIGHT NOW. I'VE BEEN COVERING RAP FEVERISHLY THE LAST 15 YEARS!!!!!!! YOU WILL THANK ME LATER!

1.0 out of 5 stars Wack to the bone, March 21, 1999

This review is from: Destined to Be (Audio CD)
This album makes no sense at all. The lyrics is all about cristal, get my mack on, and leaving the whole block wetto (whatever that means). This album is not for the average hip hop head. By the way, who in the world would go so far in wearing a mink (the mink is tighter than a chickenhead with a bubble northface) with a baseball cap and sneakers.
