More About the Author

I'm a multi-published author, speaker, blogger, teacher, wife, grandmother--who wears many hats, but the one I most resonate with is my role as an advocate for living life to its fullest.

All of my books: the Not Just a Hearer but A DOER devotional series (volumes 1 and 2), A Cause to be Thankful, and the award-winning Destined to Live, Despite Me; are meant to uplift and encourage my readers to dedicate daily bible study time to the understanding and application of God's Word in a practical manner in life. My hope is to educate others on the grace and blessings provided to those that faithfully follow and become obedient to the Word of God, that they might experience life in abundance!

If you don't see it inspite of the challenges you face, DESTINED TO LIVE will help you look at where are you and remember what can be ahead.

This book is great because it helps the reader understand that suicide survivors do not need to live with guilt.

As I read Destined to Live Despite Me by Yolanda Shanks, the pages came alive with a renewed and wondrous confirmation of the power and presence of God's love. The author, at the age of fourteen, was pregnant and believed that she faced a hopeless situation so she attempted to take her own life. Thank God this suicide attempt failed and her life went on to bear much fruit that would feed many hungry souls. This book is a portion of that fruit and, although written for survivors of suicide, it will inspire and help all individuals who are facing trials and tribulations. Whether or not a person has accepted God's gift of love through the acceptance of His son, Jesus Christ, this book will impact his or her life if read with an open mind and a desire for true happiness and peace. The more we learn of God's love, the better we understand ourselves. As readers follow the author on her journey toward salvation and Christian growth, they will cry for what she endured and rejoice because she is an overcomer.

While in the hospital from her suicide attempt, this frightened and lonely girl remembers the details of her experience. She also recalls one of her older sisters telling the doctor that an abortion was not what Yolanda needed. Once released, the teenager went home with this sister who lived with an older lady, a compassionate Christian woman with a ministering heart. She cared for Yolanda, both physically and spiritually. She introduced her to Jesus Christ and soon, thereafter, Yolanda accepted Him as her Lord and Savior. Yolanda did not have an abortion but gave birth to a son.

What I like most about this book is the honesty with which it is written.

This book is a great resource for Christians who have attempted, or thought about attempting, suicide at some point. The author details her own early experience with hopelessness and depression, and her own suicide attempt, and how she has struggled with guilt and shame because of it. But she also talks about how trusting God and walking close to Him has given her a new meaning to life, and helped take away her guilt and shame. Overall, the book was very uplifting and encouraging. I would recommend it - and will keep it in my library to loan out if needed.

There can not be enough ever said about the importance of those who have gone through challenges and hard times sharing them with others. In DESTINED TO LIVE, DESPITE ME, author Yolanda Shanks shares her experiences that led her to look at suicide as the answer to what she was going through, and how she was able to find reasons to live.

As someone who has also been at that dark place in life, it not only inspired me to read her story and how she is using her life today---I was also forced to look at where I have come from as well. We all have so much to be proud of and to be thankful for. If you don't see it inspite of the challenges you face, DESTINED TO LIVE will help you look at where are you and remember what can be ahead.

It does require work on our part. For Yolanda, she had to look past herself and what she was faced with and look up to her Heavenly Father. For others it may not be that easy, but it is a necessity to believe in something bigger than yourself. This is true especially if you are going to learn what is really means to live.

I suggest this book for anyone who is going through something (which in my opinion would be all of us), but I think it will be one you will find yourself referring back to time and again.

The author is to be congratulated for sharing, and you will benefit by reading it.

"Suicide, a taboo subject, delivered with an introspective viewpoint. This true story of a woman who has felt the throngs of the deepest lows and come through to the other side with healing and renewal. Destined to Live by Yolanda Shanks is a down to earth look at suicide and the negative thoughts that many of us have had at some point that can lead to suicidal thoughts or suicide.

She probes the questions we all ask. Who Am I? Why are we here? Who is God? Yolanda has looked at herself with a magnifying glass and shared what she found in words - revealing herself in a way that takes courage. She is a Christian who shares her beliefs and why they were and are so vital to her personal growth.

I especially liked the fact that Yolanda donates $1 for each copy sold to the American Association of Suicidology's (AAS) One Million Voices Campaign. If you believe that someone close to you is contemplating suicide, has ever contemplated or, if you have any questions about someone who has gone through it, this book is a must read." Yolanda Shank's "Destined to Live, Despite Me: Biblical Truths for Suicide Survivors" is a raw and triumphant depiction of a suicidal survivor herself, Shank, and the connection with God, love and acceptance. True feelings are scripted in her novel and both feelings of empathy and joy will wrap your soul. Yolanda Shank has given her readers a gift. "Destined to Live, Despite Me" is not meant to be a biography for self-pity, instead it induces humility and truth; a development in accepting the God's love for you and love for yourself. We all deserve to live with love. Shank is a wonderful writer and "Destined to Live, Despite Me" would make a beautiful present or a novel you want to keep on your bookshelves.
