Book Description

Jasmine Jones is ready to begin her new life as a college student, and is ecstatic to have best friend Abby by her side. But weeks into their new college life, Abby drops the bomb- she is pregnant, and dropping out of college. Jasmine can’t handle the fact that Abby is wasting her opportunity to get an education, and going back to her cheating, abusive boyfriend. She struggles to move on from her friendship with Abby, and befriends two new girls at college- Kiley and Cari. Everything seems back on track for Jasmine- great new friendships and roommates, a strong relationship with boyfriend Nate, and excelling at her college courses. But Jasmine’s newfound happiness is shattered when her pregnancy test comes out positive. Does she have to drop out of college now and become a young mother? Will Nate stay with her? How can she afford a child? Jasmine’s life has been filled with obstacles and challenges along the way- from a missing father, sexual and physical abuse, and addictions that tore her family apart. With this latest setback, Jasmine fears her life will always be a struggle. Destined to Fail is one woman’s story about overcoming adversity in life, about taking the negatives and finding a positive, and about never giving up hope.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, clean story- inspirational for the younger reader November 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have worked with Samantha on a strictly professional level and naturally, had high expectations for her debut novel. She is young, professional, educated and eloquent, and I knew that even though it wasn't a book I might normally pick up (based off her story-line alone), her professionalism would carry her and sure enough, I was not disappointed. I didn't have a problem with the weightiness of her subjects and I felt it suited the characters just fine. Though the girls were a little sappy for my taste from time to time (they always seemed to be touching one another in a loving manner, at a certain point it got a little annoying), their emotions were raw and suited the issues they were dealing with. Ebooks can be unpolished and unprofessional, but minus a few typos here and there, I felt that it was a great effort. Again, Samantha's writing style was enough to carry the story and I think this could be an inspiring book for a teenage girl or a young woman just starting out in college. Destined to Fail aside, I applaud and trust Samantha's writing and would definitely read another of her books!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Autumn Review for Destined to Fail February 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Summary:
Jasmine Jones is headed off to college and will be rooming with her best friend. She also has a great new boyfriend at home. Life is good. Then it isn't. Jasmine's best friend finds out she's pregnant and decides to move home to be with her abusive boyfriend. JJ is left feeling angry and frustrated by her friend's decision. In the meantime, she's made some good friends and fortunately has a place to stay with them. As the girls get to know each other better, they all reveal their own secrets of current and past abusive situations. Nate and JJ's relationship continues to grow and she finds out she is also pregnant. Jasmine feels as though her world is falling apart. Nothing ever seems to go well in her life, from her abusive childhood to this unexpected pregnancy. Through all of this heartache, she finds the determination to bring something good out of the hurt.

My Take:
WOW! There is some pretty serious trauma going on here. What should be a wonderful time in a girls life, turns out to be pretty darn painful. Jasmine has certainly been through the ringer. She's had some terrible things happen to her as a child. It's amazing she was able to come out of it somewhat normally. I absolutely could not imagine having to deal with some of the issues she faced at that age. I like to think I was mature then, but I was no where near ready to be a parent. I felt like she handled the adversity well and she maturely considered all of her options. It made me feel empowered as a woman to see her pull through these difficult situations and make it positive. She became such a great inspiration and role model.

I loved seeing how her relationship with Nate progressed and how she really found love for the first time. I know this may sounds like a heavy book, and truthfully, it is. However, I recommend it because there are difficult issues here, but it ended on a positive note and showed us that there is hope for a better future. Most definitely an inspirational story! The only negative thing I would have to say, is that it was a little slow to get started, but about halfway through, the development of the story became stronger and had a smoother flow for me.
