Edouard and Helene are an unforgettable couple.
Edouard de Chavigny comes from a dynastic family of French jewelers. Helene Craig comes from the wrong side of the tracks in rural Alabama. They see each other on the streets of Paris and they have that prescient recognition, "love at first sight"-- and their story begins. Edouard and Helene, seemingly worlds apart, come together with a sense of inevitability.
This book is not a romance, though a love story is one of the novel's central features. The plot takes place in Europe and America with events transpiring from 1959 to 1975. The plot lags when Edouard and Helene are separated and there is a certain "ick" factor to the plot-- which is there for I don't know what reason. But the love story is like no other.
Ms. Beauman is often compared to Sidney Sheldon, with her glittering world of jetsetting characters, rightly so. But Destiny has a better love story than ones you find in Sheldon's novels.

The story of Eduard and Helene was so emotionally charged and passionate! I accidentally managed to miss a crucial passage in the book telling Helene's real backround which made the revelation Eduard has at the end all the more heart wrenching. Very emotional book, keeps you there and is so hard to put down. You really live in the hearts of the characters and really feel their emotions. A grand passionate love story with riches, intrigue, lots of steamy moments, and filled with real life feelings. An absolute MUST read book!

My favorite book of all time for fiction! Although a very long novel, its twists and turns and masterful weaving of a story through many decades is simply the best love story I've ever read. If anyone thinks that "Titanic" is the love story of all love stories, they haven't even begun to know what is in store when they encounter Edouard and Helene's love for each other...........my only disappointment is that it had to end the way it did, but that's what makes the story so poignant. Set amid France, England, and America, it is full of surprises along the way and also the story of a two people who never forgot each other despite many setbacks and trials. If only I could know a man like Edouard.................

Read this book over 25 years ago and loved it. I loaned it to a co-worker and never got it back. Now, many years later and hundreds of books later, I found it again on Amazon. I am reading it again for the first time since I was in my 20's. Now in my 40's, and stil LOVE this book!

From the first page you are drawn into the story and I couldn't wait to find out how the story would end. It was the first book I have read for a long time where I just couldn't put it down. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes a good read.

Wow. Yes, this book reminded me of Sidney Sheldon's "Masters of the Game" because, like that book, it contains many characters, whose lives are interwoven by chance. It's a huge book with so many many many characters, you'll need to stop and reassess them all, but it's a delight to read. A love story between a French baron, Eduord, and an English misfit, Helene. How they are joined together is a mystery I will leave you to find out for yourself. The book details the lives of Eduord and Helene, together and apart, and a love that is amazing. How they came together was just a matter of destiny. Pure pleasure, this book was, and I just loved every bit of it.

Supposedly, with DESTINY Sally Beauman became famous for receiving the biggest advance for a first novel. One has to wonder why. Not that the novel is a goner. Beauman clearly knows how to write. Her prose is as eloquent as her setting and characterization. A lot had been invested in this novel, and kudos for that since the woman definitely has all the makings of a best-selling author. But despite DESTINY's many powerful moments told with warmth and flair (like the outcome of the heroine's childhood friend, for instance), the novel lacks strength. Predictability wins over substance. Beauman's destined to be together characters H'l'ne and Edouard are a likeable duo, and karma sure does wonders for both of them, yet without much of originality to boost up its sagging plot, Sally Beauman's first major outer since penning a few Harlequins (as Vanessa James) leaves much to be desired.-----Martin Boucher

Format: Paperback
The rags to riches story of Helen Craig, a girl from diminished circumstances, who meets wealthy Parisian Edouard de Chavigny on the streets of Paris. Love knows no class boundaries, and when their eyes meets it is love at first sight. Spanning the years between 1959 and 1975, this is a classic love story, with juicy characters, dastardly plots and evil machinations. A book that allows a reader true escape from the hum drum of everyday life.
