sifting through the flotsam & jetsam,

This review is from: Destiny Betrayed : J.F.K., Cuba, and the Garrison Case (Hardcover)
I enjoyed this book for a few reasons: 1) it is a concise (although not comprehensive) summary of the known facts of the assassination/investigation, 2) it is adept at weaving the events and moods of the day into the historical tapestry, 3) it is the first book I've encountered to look at Jim Garrison the man and his motivations in an objective manner. I've followed most of the conspiracy theories and anti-conspiracy theories pretty closely, and find it rare to encounter a study like this one, that doesn't add confusion for every point it clarifies. While there is a lot of additional material worthy of reading and research, this book is a good objective overview of the assassination in in's historical context, and of the only prosecution of anyone anywhere for the crime of the century.

the Definitive telling of the Garrison case,

Destiny Betrayed is the true telling of the Garrison case in which it was heavily attacked by the Media and Govt. Jim Deugino tells the whole story clearly and to the point about what really happend to Garrison's prosecution of Clay Shaw for conspiracy of assassinating JFK. although Garrison made some mistakes, which cost some crediblity on the case. never the less its a damn fine book to read to show that Garrison was on the right track.

James DiEugenio is to be commended for a fine book on the Garrison case that still holds up well, all these years later. DiEugenio, along with Lisa Pease, is also responsible for the outstanding "Probe" journal and website, as well as the excellent "The Assassinations" book from 2003. Get this!

This review is from: Destiny Betrayed : J.F.K., Cuba, and the Garrison Case (Hardcover)
This is an excellently written narrative of the facts and circumstances revolving around the Jim Garrison investigation and Shaw trial in the late 60's. The efforts by the CIA to disrupt his investigation has been proven in the years since. Why would they want to disrupt an investigation into a murder? Garrison paid tribute to the early researchers like Lane, Epstein, and Weisberg and followed a path most Americans eventually did also follow - the belief in the WC Report and then the fall from innocence. Many JFK books are filled with research and facts that can overwhelm a reader, but DiEugenio keeps the focus and doesn't drown the reader in tangents. Until Garrison, no one thought New Orleans was important. His interview with Playboy in 1967 still holds up in 2010. History will be kind to Mr. Garrison, and this book and Joan Mellen's will help that evaluation.

Good Summary of the Garrison Case,

This review is from: Destiny Betrayed : J.F.K., Cuba, and the Garrison Case (Hardcover)
This is a classic summary of the Garrison case that holds up very well from the perspective of time. These many years later, we know so much more of the case now, including the fact (thanks to the ARRB) that Shaw was in fact a CIA asset as Garrison stated, and his role over twenty years was far from that of an occasional asset. This excellent volume gives us a summary of the major points of the Garrison case, as well as background on Permindex and the World Trade Center's role in Central American politics. The writing is clear and paced nicely.

As far as I am concened, James DiEugenio is one of the leading authorities on the JFK case.
He can draw a pretty broad picture and at the same time fill you with a tremendous amount of details. Most of this material is available at [...] Destiny Betrayed was DiEugenio's first book. It tells the story of how Jim Garrison's probe into the New Orleans angle of the JFK assassination was made to derailed. We are talking here about Ferrie, Shaw, Banister, Arcacha Smith, 544 Campt St and so forth. If you are student of the case, it's a book you need on your shelf. It is well researched, heavily footnoted, marvelously written and not even obsolete. People interested in this province of the case (popularized by Oliver Stone's JFK movie) might also want to purchase Bill Davy's Let Justice Be Done (althought a new version of this book is expected soon). I can't say much about this work as I haven't read it yet. Editor of Probe magazine, James DiEugenio also published (with Lisa Pease) an excellent compilation of essays (by various authors) called The Assassinations: Probe Magazine on JFK, MLK, RFK, and Malcolm X. |
