5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BY FAR, December 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Destiny of Emperor (Video Game)
This is the best nintendo game out there. This game should really be under the rpg catagory because its gameplay is much like an rpg. You gain levels and use tactics (insted of magic). If you had not noticed or did'nt know this game launched many others including the romance of the three kingdoms games as well as the new dynasty warrior games for the playstation 1 & 2. This game is based on the book Romance of the three kingdoms by Lou Guanzhong so I'd think that crouching tiger would have been based on the book not the game but it doesn't matter. What does is that this is a great game even today. Try playing Final Fantasy again today, It's slow and boring but it was great back then. Destiny of an Emperor was great back then and now. If you don't have the system anymore just download an emulator and this game you'll be pleased. By the way if you have time to spare and like this game and the dynasty series try reading the book Romance of the three kingdoms it's long as hell but it's a great book!!!

You can have your FFxiii - I'll take Destiny of an emperor anyday. I own just about every platform ever made, dating back to the NES and Sega master system, and the ol NES games get played more than any other. WHY? Because this was when they made GAMES! These days all they make are spiffy movies with little bits of gameplay interjected. Nothing makes me more angry than to pay $60 for a game that turns out to be nothing more than japanimation sequences that require you to sit there and hit a button every few seconds to spawn yet another fmv sequence.
Destiny of an emperor will not disappoint. Nice large dungeons. Difficult battles. Simple yet fun battle system. I've played this game through so many times I can navigate the caves in my sleep, and this game still takes me 20+ hours to complete. All I'm waiting for is for someone to remake it on a current platform so I can stop rebuilding my NES every time it breaks!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-play!!, March 10, 2003
This review is from: Destiny of Emperor (Video Game)
When I played this I didn't think it was much, but then when the plot was building up, wow! I would agree that this is the best NES game ever. I also read that the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was based on this game.

Sound - 9/10

Good music for the backgrounds and towns, and good battle themes too.

Graphics - 8/10

Hey, for a 14 year old RPG, these graphics are great! No annoying flashes or anything when doing spells in battles.

Gameplay - 10/10

Nice! The battle system is superb in DoaE. I like the "All-Out" option in the battle menu, it's thrilling and fun to watch 2 armies charge at each other and let the smackdown begin! Balanced characters, lack of weapons and armor.

Storyline - 10/10

Killer plot!! I loved all the twists and turns the game went through, and it takes a hella long time to beat the game (Around 25-30 hours).

........

A must-play!!

Overall 10/10

Just a bit of trivia for all of you out there... this game is based on several real-life people, including the Emperor itself, and the beginning of the game is much like actual Chinese history, but soon enough, the events of the game diverge very far from what actually happened to China, especially between the destined Emperor and Si Ma Yi.

The battle comes with two choices - you can take turns and decide your attacks each turn, or if you just want to get it over with and are confident in the level/experience/strength of your men, you can do an all-out melee and just sit back for a few seconds as your men destroy the other party. You can also recruit captured warlords to your cause, and build up your dream team of seven special warriors, all who have the ability to level-up (unlike the warlords) You can also discard warlords from your party, keeping it a manageable size. Though the map and directives can get a bit confusing at times, this is still a fun game.

This game is as self explanitory, but yet fun and simple as RPG's get.Based of of the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms " novel/Chinese play,it is a game w/ an envolving plot like the formentioned. The game play is reminiscent of games such as "Dragon Warrior l,Legend of Zelda" etc. If you loved those games of yester-year then you will "deffinately" enjoy this well over looked title as well.If Capcom ever makes a Greatest Hits game disk like Sega recently has of their games,I would hope this would make Capcom 's list.Hope this review is helpful to you.

This is a great NES game. I spent many nights as a kid building up my characters, walking around towns gaining information, changing my active team, and enjoyed watching the enemy numbers dial themselves to zero. A great old RPG game.
