Book Description

June 1, 1997
Out of the fire…

He'd saved her from the flames, but it was Sheriff Gabriel Blackhorse's own heat Lanie Matthews feared. The first time she looked into his night-dark eyes she felt a stirring of recognition, as though she'd come home. But Lanie was only passing through Four Winds….

Into the flame?

People kept telling her that Four Winds had a way of changing one's mind. It had certainly changed her luck. First the fire, then it seemed a mysterious gift from a passing peddler had put Lanie's life in danger…and her fate in the hands of the very man she was determined to avoid. Could Lanie really escape Gabriel…or her destiny?

5.0 out of 5 stars MYSTERY AND MYSTIQUE -- WELL DONE, December 6, 2003

Caught in a fire? Gabriel Blackhorse was definitely getting out of the area.

But first he has to save Lanie Matthews, a traveler just passing through.
Ah, but then the Peddler shows up with a gift for Lanie.

It is neat the way Sheriff Gabriel Blackhorse's flinthawk fits in and protects. We now meet the many residents of Four Winds, New Mexico and how they all react to the visit of the Peddler.

I wondered when Lanie could handle her "gift" and yet it reacted badly to the Sheriff.

As always, greed and corruption lay at the bottom of so much trouble and I developed a feeling early on [instinctive, I wonder?] I will say that I enjoyed the way the conclusion was brought about.

Lanie and her supporting cast were great - but I object to the women who are so certain that their options lay in only one direction and then they have to change their mind. But I suppose change is what it is all about. [dumb gals]

I thoroughly enjoy the insights given into the Navajo People and their beliefs.

A great read -- Highly Recommended --M

5.0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Book--Pure Pleasure to Read, September 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Her Destiny (Four Winds) (Harlequin Intrigue #427) (Paperback)
To be honest, I haven't always been a fan of Thurlo's work, but this one blew me away. Managing to combine some mystical elements with a heart-pounding love story and a tension-filled mystery, Thurlo has come up with a winner. While passing through the town of Four Winds, NM, the heroine is given a gift by a mysterious peddler, who is renowned for creating trouble in town with his cursed gifts. Sure enough, strange things begin to happen to her. Can the handsome sheriff some to her rescue? Our wounded heroine and her big, strong hero make a great combination and the story is one I know will stick with me for quite some time. This and M.J. Rodgers' "The Dream Wedding" would be my two choices for the Best Harlequin Intrigue of 1997. It's not to be missed.
