4.0 out of 5 stars Too Many Incomplete Reviews for Destiny September 18, 2014
Verified Purchase
I waited to post a review of this game until I had a character at or near level 20, which everyone else should have waited to do, "professional reviewers" included. It's near level 20 when the game really starts to require some teamwork and strategy, and it's also when the best items become available. This game has the most half-baked and unfinished reviews of any title I've ever seen simply for the fact that reviewers did not play to the first level cap. I said first, because after you hit 20 you start to get gear that levels your character even more, provided you've gathered the means to do so. And to gather your gear and materials, you need to grab a friend or two and take on some of the games' tough challenges like strikes. There's also matchmaking if you don't have someone to run with, which has worked almost perfectly since day one. You can join a group or clan on the site if you want to. The problem is there's no in game way to see your clan list, you have to use the website. Kind of a problem in a social game like this. Needs a fix, Bungie. Other than that the game has been a trouble free experience. I started on day 1 and have to admit this was the most smooth online game launch I've ever witnessed.
The Limited Edition package is well done. The Steelbook game case and the Arms book come in a bookshelf worthy display box. The antique star chart is ok, would be better if it didn't have fold lines, still a cool piece of art. The Postcards have excellent artwork on them. Honestly the Postcards are frame worthy and I might do just that! You also get the codes for two major expansions that are still upcoming as I write this. Also included are codes for some neat in game items and 30 days free of PS Plus.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want Destiny then buy the Collector's Edition September 10, 2014

I don't play as much as I used to, but I do purchase highly anticipated new releases on a regular basis, and when I do - I rarely opt for the 'Limited' or 'Collector's' editions simply because they don't have enough to justify the $40 price difference. This one is beyond a doubt the best purchase you can make if you're thinking of buying the game in general. If you factor in the price of the game and the expansion pass, $35, you're essentially paying $5 for the collector's edition.

In terms of the presentation: This is very well made. I was surprised by the contents and the quality in which they came. The slipcover slides off the box reveals a soft texture material. It opens from the side - and inside you have a metallic casing which contains your game, and access codes for bonus material. Next to the game is an art book. I'm not exaggerating, I was blown away by the quality of the book. I don't want to ruin the experience for you, but you'll be happily surprised.

The Game:

The graphics are intense, and playing it on a 65" it'll definitely feel more immersive. This looks and feels next-gen, and up until now I haven't been able to really say that with many PS4 games. The story is alright, nothing really spectacular or revolutionary. For some reason, the voice of Ghost done by Peter Dinklage falls flat for me. Cortana from the Halo franchise has really made an impact on the Bungie brand, and I was expecting something similar. I know a complaint during Alpha and Beta was that the protagonist didn't have a voice - he does now. The missions are repetitive, but the AI is fairly good. You'll see them dodging and leaning behind pillars, and out of your line-of-sight if they spot you. They don't automatically turn around if you enter the area.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good gameplay, bare bones story, still a lot of fun. November 14, 2014

I really enjoyed the time I spent playing this game. All the mechanics are spot on and it is a good shooter. The story isn't much, as everyone has already told you, but I've spent a lot of hours leveling up characters and I've even added a lot of people to my PSN friends list in the process. I took off a star because now I'm pretty high level and don't really feel like I have anywhere else to go in the game, but I got more hours out of this game than the last few games I've bought combined. I'd liken it to Borderlands with a Halo skeleton.

5.0 out of 5 stars No complaints here. October 29, 2014

You get the physical game as well as the first two DLC for less than buying them at different times. That in itself should be enough to get your attention.
The box itself hold the steel case (very nice and detailed one might I add) and art book neatly in itself as they slide in and the box closes from the side with a magnetic latch.
Overall, one of the most simplistiic but visually pleasing packages I've seen in some time.

2.0 out of 5 stars More to be desired.... December 8, 2014

I have been a Bungie fan for many years. Ever since Halo 1, I've played and read anything I could get my hands on with the Halo universe and lore. So imagine my excitement when Destiny was announced with all of the aforementioned features.

Initally, I pre-ordered the Limited Edition Destiny Bundle for PS4, in addition to the white PS4. I waited to see the official reviews (which mysteriously took almost two weeks after launch) and customer reviews to hold final judgement. I'm so glad I returned my limited edition PS4 game copy. I instead grabbed an amazing deal far below the retail price, and bought it for both systems as I had friends on both platforms.

What I experienced, however, is exactly what others have witnessed and has been posted (Angry Joe and BDobbinsFTW in particular) is that it's a broken and brutally chopped up game with a nonexistent backstory.

The story is horrendous. I have no idea what's going on, who the factions are, why they are fighting. The project lead writer left who developed the entire right story for Destiny (who had a hand at the entire Halo series story). No explanation given but it's not hard to figure out why.

With stupid idiotic dialogue like this:

Horrendous dialog:
"the Wizard Came From the Moon"

"I Don't Have Time to Explain What I Don't Have Time to Explain"

There's a lot to like: The game design is beautiful, the soundtrack if fantastic, and the gameplay is tight, and feels right. But it's getting extremely repetitive. Ill achieve level 30, then wait for sale on DLC or see if friends still play.
