I give this album a 5 star rating because the playing is phenomenally exceptional. Nelson lets loose and expresses himself with pure energy. A very talented saxophonist atypical of the standard GRP fare. The only drawback I have with this release is that he hasn't a 'signature sound.' For example, Gato Barbeiri has the strained, seemingly imploding reed sound. Stanley Turrentine has the solid, classy, elegant embouchure and bold timbre. Paul Desmond has the dry, yet emotively sweet strain. Nelson's sound is like Sanborn's (which isn't bad) however it isn't particularly unique. A favorite cut is "Grace." Listen to the peaks and valleys of the expelled force of air on this cut and the sublime beauty--it is aptly named. Nelson needs to release more albums as this. Another must have for your collection.

DESTINED TO BE ENTHRALLED,
By
This review is from: Destiny (Audio CD)
I only recently "rediscovered" the CD, Destiny, much to my pleasure. It is simply a masterpiece. My favorite cut is "Sonora"(#9), a hauntingly beautiful, sensitive piece that tells a different story every time I hear it. There are also the more familiar tunes, such as the beautiful "Grace", and a terrific interpretation of the Burt Bacharach song, "A house is not a home". Simply put, this is a superb album and a great showcase of Nelson Rangell's enormous talents. He is truly a giant in the Smooth Jazz arena...and "DESTINY" shows just why!

Destiny....Nelson Rangell,
By Gail Luella Francis (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands United States) - See all my reviews

I had the opportunity to hear, live in concert, Nelson Rangell when he appeared in beautiful St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Not much people attended, but he was spectacular, simply wonderful. After the concert I had to find his CD's to purchase and this one, Destiny, is just wonderful. I would highly recommend it. There was a song that he performed by whistling, it brought tears to my eyes. I can't seem to find it on any of his CD's though. If you know which CD it's on, please let me know. I bought two others, so now I have 3 Nelson Rangell that I play daily. Good job!

Rediscovering Rangell,

This review is from: Destiny (Audio CD)
Others have used the word rediscovered. TRuly it describes what happened with this CD. I was rearranging things and listened to this(since it had been a while). Great unique sax sound!!!! This CD has it all. Upbeat, ballads, funky tunes. diverse sounds. It maybe almost 10 years since this came out, but certainly worth more than 1 listen and would be excellent by today's standards.

A SLAMMIN' PIECE OF WORK!!!,
By Tony Berry (Kapolei, Hawaii United States) - See all my reviews

My Uncle Mike turned me on to this cd when he visited me in Japan a few years ago. I had never heard of Nelson Rangell before that but after listening to this slammin' cd I got hooked on his music. My favorite cut on this cd is "Little Dream Girl" because my wife and I had just gotten married and everytime I hear that cut I think about the first time I met her.

Fire this baby UP,

From the get go, the listener of this release will get a sense of the tempo at which Nelson Rangell moves. He will get you goin' on 'The Road Ahead' and then there's no stopping us now. 'Grace' is a quintessential romantic mood tune that is in a class with Gato Barbieri's 'Europa'. If you like flute, Nelson does a superb job in 'Rainbow Shadows' and on the surprisingly alluring 'Joie de Vivre' you will be wondering why he doesn't do an album of all flute and piccolo songs; he's that good! This is a must-have CD for lovers of fine sax music. You'll keep coming back to this Chuck Loeb produced stand-out.

His songs are great! It features songs with tenor, alto, soprano saxes and flute. I love the variety of his music and how he can go from low notes to high in no time. This is a must have for jazz fans out there (especially sax fans).
