Light, entertaining reading where you can learn something,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Destiny: From Paul Harvey's the Rest of the Story (Hardcover)
In the seventies, I worked construction and spent a great deal of time in a truck moving from job to job. During that travel time, the radio was always on and I heard many episodes of the Paul Harvey "The Rest of the Story" broadcasts. They were always interesting and it was a game to try to determine what the "rest of the story" punch line was going to be.
This book is a collection of many of those snippets that made up the "Rest of the Story" radio program. When reading them, I could still hear that very distinctive voice of Paul Harvey as he read through it. I enjoyed this book; it is an example of light, entertaining reading where you can actually learn something.

After reading other items about Paul Harvey's "The Rest of the Story" segments, it sounds as though the accuracy can be somewhat debated, but what can't be is how entertaining each story is.
It doesn't quite sound the same when I read it our loud, but then my Paul Harvey impression isn't top notch. Just reading it though makes one think back in time a bit, and helps to put some humanity to people who were otherwise larger than life. If you're at all a fan of his radio show (which is still excellent), get this book and value it as a treasured part of your personal library, and as a link to a past way of telling stories. Good stuff!

The Rest of the Story about The Rest of the Story....,

This review is from: Destiny: From Paul Harvey's the Rest of the Story (Mass Market Paperback)
Paul Harvey was a radio personality phenomenon for decades. These paperbacks contain collections of very short stories (selected from his radio broadcasts). Each story is perhaps a five minute read.
They begin with a simple intoduction to a situation and a person, then some elaboration on the individual's development--usually neither sociable, impressive nor important. And finally, how this individual went on to make an impact on the world. These are historical tidbits--mysterious, curious, puzzling, amusing and surpising.....all of these paperback books in the series "The Rest of the Story" are worth reading and enjoying....especially the conclusions......When you finish these books, please give them to a young person--they make easy reading and may have some inspirational impact....... I hope the OTR (Old Time Radio)revivalists will add Paul Harvey's shows to their MP3 downloads and CDs.

Maybe if more people listened to Paul Harvey when they had the opportunity, or read one of his books at any point in their life, "Today's American" might still feel the overwhelming pride of Citizenship, and genuine desire to keep building an even better Nation through personal dedication to hard work, honesty and a reality of "Neighboorhood" and not just today's communities of "I will mind my own business, so will you...no matter what...for Good or for Ill". Reading his books, I heard every word, every emphasis, and absolutely EVERY ONE of those pauses that used to make me lean just a little closer to the radio waiting for "The Rest of the Story"; whose moral was always always there for the listener to heed, or not; and that bone-deep feeling of having heard a few minutes of someone else's life that may very well have a lasting affect on the rest of yours.

This is a great book of short stories from his radio series, known there as "The Rest of the Story' (tag line at end, "and now you know, the REST of the story...."). Great to hear, great to read. Not apparently any overlap of stories also printed in two paper editions called The Rest of the Story, and RotS part 2.
