Biography

In the late 90s and early 00s, Destiny's Child were one of the biggest pop groups in the world, dominating radio airwaves and charts with their distinctive sassy R&B. Originally a four-piece, internal problems caused line-up changes at the height of the group's success. After carrying on as a trio, Destiny's Child announced their split during a world tour in 2005, with each member happy to pursue… Read more in Amazon's Destiny's Child Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Destiny's Child began in 1990 as a novelty act aimed at teenagers. But they exceeded all expectations, both commercially and artistically, becoming a platinum-selling, multi-Grammy-winning sensation and attracting fans from all age groups and backgrounds with their dulcet, feisty-fresh harmonies and message of sisterly solidarity delivered with plenty of keep-it-real and love-over-all. Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams -- LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett left early on -- have broken ranks to devote themselves to their individual careers so the end of an era has been accomplished. But this collection is a bonanza for new fans and completists, capturing the band's chart-toppers in one place, augmented by Stand Up For Love plus a pair of pleasant but unessential other new tunes. The Dual-Disc B-Side contains a selection of videos, each of which display the ladies at their show-stopping, luscious best. It feels odd to think of this band in the past tense, so even while celebrating their past achievements, let's hope that they will continue to reunite whenever the spirit moves and for years to come. --Christina Roden

5.0 out of 5 stars One-stop source for the most popular Destiny's Child cuts, October 25, 2005
This review is from: Destiny's Child: #1's (Audio CD)
#1's is not a definitive overview of Destiny's Child from beginning to apparent end; that will likely come in a year or two with something on the order of a 2CD addition to Sony's ESSENTIAL series. Rather, #1's loosely lives up to its title by squeezing the group's most popular tracks -- some of them are the edited single versions -- and three new cuts onto one CD. The buyer is more likely to be happy with this set if they look at it as a Destiny's Child "highlights mixtape" of sorts (but of course here the songs don't run together: they are all complete, separate tracks).

Their 1998 self-titled debut is represented by one track (the Wyclef Jean mix "No, No, No Pt. 2"). The final three albums had the bulk of the hits, and therefore you get four cuts from WRITING'S ON THE WALL (1999) and SURVIVOR (2001), plus three from 2004's DESTINY FULFILLED. The new tracks are highlighted by the ballad "Stand Up For Love." The other new tracks don't quite compare to the #1's heard throughout the rest of this CD, but still manage to maintain the r&b/hip-hop momentum that runs throughout the majority of this collection. Unless you're a fan who wants to own all of the original albums, #1's should give most potential buyers the cuts you're looking for, with arguably no filler.

This DualDisc's DVD-side has awesome-sounding audio (not surround-sound, but they don't need to be). Seven videoclips are included ("No, No, No Pt.2." "Say My Name," "Survivor," "Bootylicious," "Independent Women Pt. 1." "Lose My Breath," "Soldier," and "Cater 2 U"), plus what is basically an ad for an upcoming concert DVD. Although not a complete collection of promo clips, it's a good representative sampling. As with the audio content, it's a fine selection for the fan who doesn't want to own everything the group ever created.

For all the fans of Destiny's Child, these oldest hits, along with new hits. Are sure to blow your mind away. And the extra DVD includes a few videos of their most awesomest hits. You'll be sure to Love it.
Overall I'm just going to end this review with one word that describes this:

5.0 out of 5 stars Farewell to One of the Greatest Groups in Music History, October 30, 2005
This review is from: Destiny's Child: #1's (Audio CD)
As everyone already knows, Destiny's Child is the BIGGEST SELLING FEMALE GROUP OF ALL TIME (many name TLC, but that's quite the contrary; at the World Music Awards -- which gives awards by record sells -- earlier this year, DC3 received the honor of highest-selling female band in history, with over 50 MILLION ALBUMS SOLD WORLDWIDE!). They're my favorite group EVER (along with Boyz II Men), and I'm glad to see them leave on a very, very high note. In 2001, they made Columbia Records history when their 3rd proper album, "Survivor," made the highest debut sales week of any artist ever signed to Columbia (please keep in mind that the biggest-selling female solo artist of all time (and another of my favorites) -- Mariah Carey -- was signed to Columbia for quite some time, and never seemed to get that many debut sales).

As could be expected, the classic DC3 tracks are just as jumpin' as ever before. These songs aren't classic for the group; no one can deny that "Say My Name," "Survivor," "Independent Women," and "Bills, Bills, Bills," and "Bootylicious" are classic songs period. You don't even have to be a fan of them to have come across any of these songs.

I'm also here to correct what one reviewer wrote in his/her review. This reviewer stated that the group's final album, "Destiny Fulfilled," was a flop. Apparently this person didn't research enough; the album made its proper debut at #1 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and at #2 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart (due to pre-release "street" sales, it debuted at #19 on the Billboard 200, but after its full 1st week of release, at hit #2; it debuted on the chart after only 3 days on the shelves, which we all know is too early for an album debut.) In the end, "Fulfilled" has sold 4 million copies to date; that's hardly a flop. This same reviewer also said that the singles didn't chart very well; not true either. "Girl" didn't do that well, but "Cater 2 U" peaked at #3 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Chart, while "Soldier" (w/T.I. & Lil' Wayne) peaked at #3 on both the R&B/Hip-Hop Chart, as well as on the Hot 100; "Lose My Breath" peaked at #3 on the Hot 100 as well, while it hit #10 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Chart.

Regardless of what anyone says, they're one of the greatest singing groups in the history of music, and the 2nd best-selling R&B group of all-time (Boyz II Men has sold over 60 million records, making them the biggest-selling R&B group of all time, as well as the biggest-selling act in the history of the legendary Motown Records.)

These girls have left a lasting legacy that will never be forgotten. The made history as music history's biggest selling female group, and their mega-hit smash anthem, "Independent Women Pt. 1" (from the "Charlie's Angels" sdtrk.) made history by being played more times in a single week on radio than any other song IN HISTORY. Below I've put together a list of their singles, and their chart peaks on the both the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, and the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Chart.

No one can ever forget their videos. "Say My Name"'s concept was very original, and I've yet to see a video (before or after) like it. The video for "Girl" was basically a 4-minute remake of the Emmy-winning comedy series, "Sex and the City." "Bootylicious"'s video was so colorful, and the video for "Lose My Breath" was a terrific video that showcased some of the group's best dance routines.

In addition to all of this, they've won 3 Grammy Awards as a group; if you add together those 3, the 5 Beyonce won for her mega-smash debut album, "Dangerously In Love," and the 1 that Kelly won for her #1 Billboard smash duet "Dilemma" (w/Nelly), they have a total of 9 GRAMMYS!

Below is my chart list:

CHART HISTORY:
"No, No, No Pt. 2" (w/Wyclef Jean) - #1 R&B/Hip-Hop; #3 Hot 100
"Bills, Bills, Bills" - #1 R&B/Hip-Hop; #1 Hot 100
"Bug A Boo" - #15 R&B/Hip-Hop; #33 Hot 100
