Finally a heroine who isn't skinny and perfect. I fell in love with Dakota right away - she was funny and smart and really terrific. Now I have to find the other two books where she was introduced. Great time travel

Psychic Dakota Wylie is very much a 1990's woman with an attitude. Unfortunately, she was literally fading away & had to time-travel in a red hot-air balloon with some friends to New Jersey at the start of winter 1779! Patrick Devane is a masterspy--but for which side: Loyalist or Patriot?

I absolutely adored Dakota's independent spirit, big mouth, & extra pounds! Wisecracks & hilarious commentaries fill her head & spill from her mouth non-stop!

You may have wondered why I read Destiny's Child since I did not rate it's predecessor, Tomorrow and Always, very high. I have enjoyed previous books by Barbara Bretton and already had this title in my stash-to-read so I thought I would give it a go. I was hoping that Ms. Bretton was just having a run of bad luck when she wrote the other book. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The third title in a time travel romance trilogy, this was worse than the second.

Dakota Wylie is transported to the late 1700's by a hot-air balloon along with the two lead characters from Tomorrow and Always. She's Harvard educated and is a librarian so she has 'smarts' or so I thought. The author reminds us on numerous occasions that she is overweight but it has little bearing with the plot except to remnd us how low her self-esteem is.

Our hero from the past, Patrick Devane, is a single parent to young Abigail. He is handsome in looks but bitter in temperament because his wife left him for another man and then died shortly thereafter. He believes Abigail is not his daughter even though she looks like him.

After our hero and heroine meet, they argue. At one point Patrick is squeezing her neck to get her to tell him why she is there. They argue some more. And again. Then we are to believe that Patrick finds her brash antics and feistiness admirable in Dakota. At the same time Dakota finds Patrick attractive; he can lift her up and throw her over his shoulder like she doesn't weigh anything! I am sorry, I expected a whole lot more from Ms. Bretton. If I didn't know that she has written better romances I would have never bought another book by her.
