This review is from: Destiny's Promise (Harlequin Historical No. 172) (Mass Market Paperback)
Lucinda Chandler didn't know what she was getting into. But she had to leave the abuse reigned on her by her husband.
It all escalated since the debacle of a wedding night when Quentin Chandler revealed his true colors.

Of course, foolish gal that she was, she set out for Georgia all on her own. No escort. Just her silly belief that she would be all right. This is in 1821.

She ends up being rescued from her plight by none other than Charles Fenton, the stablemaster of Major Cray Stewart, owner of Prospect Plantation.
Charles is a half-Cherokee with no knowledge of who his father was. He has spent six years with the Major as a valued horsetrainer.

Here we learn of Emma Burns life with the Major and his neice, Elizabeth, whom she is to tutor. Of her slowly falling in love for the first time with a true gentleman. Of the conflict between the whites and the Cherokee Indians. The degrading attitude of the greedy white men wanting the Cherokee land.
And the selfishness of the Major's neice, Miranda and her husband to be, sister of Elizabeth.
Of the fraility of the Major's health and his stubborn determination to help his friend, Mr. McKinley, to whom he felt he owed a personal debt.

Wonderful story - well worth reading!

Lucinda Chandler was running from the nightmare!

When Lucinda fled her powerful and abusive husband in an act of desperation, she hoped to find peace and tranquility. She never thought she'd ever find true happiness, just a life of serenity being a governess living under an assumed name and identity. Governess "Emma Burns" was independent yet vulnerable, forthright yet subtly secretive and an intriguing mystery to handsome Prospect Plantation stablemaster Charles Fenton. Charles lived a lifetime of bitterness, but "Emma's" gentle understanding and genuine caring began to open his heart until Charles buried secret came to light. Can their entwined destinies bring happiness to two souls with dark secrets?

A terrific find you'll greatly enjoy!
