Editorial Reviews

Taking cues from their lengthy experience in the punk, hardcore and metal communities, Hellmouth has come together to put forth the most extreme and uncompromising band of its members' careers. With nods to bands like Celtic Frost, Black Flag, Venom, Black Sabbath and Disfear, Hellmouth is drawing from its members' past while carving its own disgusting sound.

I listened to Hellmouth for the first time because Jay Navarro is the ex singer of the Suicide Machine which is, no questions asked, my favorite band. As much as all the metalloid fans won't want to admit this, Hellmouth basically picks up where the Suicide Machines left off with "War Profiteering is Killing Us All" Since Jay's writing the lyrics, it's easy to see that he's moved only a little bit since the last SM effort. He's focused a little less on the government and more on the lives of humans and how pathetic they can be, along with grim outlooks on the future of mankind and so on and so forth. He comes off, like he did on most of the last two SM CD's, as one pissed off mofo.

Now, musically, this is quite a bit more intense than SM ever was, but that is because Hellmouth aims to bring metal and thrash into their punk agenda, and they go it well. Uberti is a much better bassist than SM's was, Mallick is much more frantic on the drums, and Alex Awn does not know the meaning of "ska guitar." For fans of old SM, you will hate this band, write Jay off, and dismiss his effort, but I say, this change is welcomed. Most of this CD is fast, loud, and brutal. The guitars and bass are insanely catchy and they sound as if they're not too complicated, which is more of the punk sort of thing. As long as I can see that shining through, this band it okay with me.

However, there are a few problems. It seems as though Hellmouth is looking to be taken very seriously in their gloom and doom lyrics and their "soundtrack for the end of human existence" but sometimes it doesn't always work. On songs like "Overtime in a Shark Cage" "Praying for Plague" and "Blood of Pigs," the example I use because they were the original myspace free tracks, it works very well.
