5.0 out of 5 stars Great album.
I love this album. I'm not straight edge and I'm not vegan. I'm a Libertarian who supports your right to eat whatever you want and take whatever drugs you want. I also support your right to abstain from those things too if you choose. Guess what? You don't have to be vegan or straight edge to enjoy this. People get too caught up in the politics and beliefs of this band...

1.0 out of 5 stars I'd give it no stars if I could.
Musically, this is uncompelling, muddy metal. If the kids want to call this "hardcore," fine, but it's metal, straight-up, and not even good metal.

Lyrically, this album is a disgrace. Earth Crisis, and a number of other "hardline" S.E. bands, have taken a positive idea -- straight edge -- and warped it into negative, hyper-judgemental, violent...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album., October 2, 2010

I love this album. I'm not straight edge and I'm not vegan. I'm a Libertarian who supports your right to eat whatever you want and take whatever drugs you want. I also support your right to abstain from those things too if you choose. Guess what? You don't have to be vegan or straight edge to enjoy this. People get too caught up in the politics and beliefs of this band and forget to focus on whats important... the music.

The riffs are heavy as hell and the vocals are brutal. The bass and the drums pound away to make a great rhythm section on here. The guitars don't wander too far off from the rhythmic foundations of the songs which makes for a great heavy and primitive sounding texture to the music. The subtle interplay between the guitars works great for these guys too. A "less is more" approach. The appeal transcends genres. For instance, I LOVE doom metal, a genre that generally praises drug use, unlike Earth Crisis. HOWEVER, they do have something in common. Slow, heavy sludge filled riffs played by down-tuned guitars, which I love.

The point is good heavy rock music is good heavy rock music. I don't care what kind of tattoos or beliefs these guys have. They're true to themselves and their music and it shows through on the quality of this release. It's awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!, September 2, 1999
This review is from: Destroy the Machines (Audio CD)
This was my very first introduction into the "hardcore" music scene. I was awed by the intensity of the music on this recording and the passion behind the vocals of Karl Buechner. You can just hear the longing in his voice. The lyrics are also quite powerful indeed. They definitely make one think about what is happening in the world today. A powerful, pounding piece of music. Incredible! --Kelly Magovern

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT LIVE BAND, June 20, 2009
This review is from: Destroy the Machines (Audio CD)
saw these guys last night in sydney and boy what a show that was. Even though they only played for 45 minutes it was still excellent, during the set i was right in front and while the singer Karl step on the metal that was separating the audience from the band i grabbed his leg ha ha but what was really cool was after that he shook my hand anyway this their debut album is their best release so pick up a copy of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Through my search for allies, I've found EARTH CRISIS, March 5, 2010
This review is from: Destroy the Machines (Audio CD)
In 1994, Earth Crisis took direct action to forge this critically essential hardcore punk recording. In fact, this was a moment never to be repeated...uniquely focused and driven, Earth Crisis hereby recorded what is most likely the very greatest hardcore punk record ever. Yes, there are a dozen credible entrants for that distinction, but to me this disc remains paramount. What is more, an unusually massive slice of the rock underground can celebrate this release for the rest of our lives because this platter comes embedded with MAJOR crossover appeal to metal fans, as well. The music, drawing an ultra-cohesive whole from multiple diverse strains of punk & metal traditions, stands as a once-in-a-lifetime collision of creativity & fury. A 5-star document even for those not interested in the lyrics, if you find the guts to even stare these lyrics straight in the eye, then you will realize the true life-long glory achieved herein by Karl and Company: though music hipsters of all ages may smirk from within the safety of their hipness (and feel relieved that THEY do not wear their hearts on their sleeves like THIS), with DESTROY THE MACHINES these men have created a 10-song sledgehammer carrying a statement of purpose -- of heart and courage -- that without question eclipses the sum total of almost any collection of 17,000 pop & rock albums. If forced, "Born From Pain" might be my #1 track pick, but they are all thrilling. This album actually contains no filler -- quite a distinction especially now in the age of the CD, when at most only 1 in 75 albums can truly support that claim. On a personal note, this CD helped me survive law school. The perspective, the drive, and the unique rage that emanates from this record can unequivocally be credited with helping inspire me to overcome the debauchery of the Socratic Method and the unfathomable amount of case law to read and digest -- from the case of the eggshell plaintiff to the intricacies of The Rule in Dumpor's Case, as set forth by Sir Edward Coke in 1578. Thanks guys. To say the least, if you don't have it yet, DESTROY THE MACHINES skips to the very top of your "TO BUY" list.

I don't care about straight edge hardcore XXX or whatever that [...] is. I have no opinion either way on their message. I just like the music and vocals. You people think too much into things. I like this because it sounds good. It's got great riffs, solid vocals, and decent production. This is the band that hatebreed tries to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's start a revolution, February 29, 2004
This review is from: Destroy the Machines (Audio CD)
I think this is, undoubtedly, one of the best hardcore albums of the 90s. If you are vegan and support the fight for animal liberation - then this album will rev you up and make you want to go out do some direct action. Check out lyrics to the song, 'Wrath of Sanity', "Night of justice, knight of justice.
Liberation's crusade's begun. Your laws will have no meaning past the setting of the sun. Demons feeding off of the innocents' pain. Generations of oppression - one generation will break this chain. Emancipation from the hands of the deranged. ... I refuse to shut my eyes. Steadfast against the deluge of evil of man's devise. The quest for their freedom won't cease until it's won."

All the billions of animals enslaved in farm factories, and all the millions of animals tortured in labs are hoping you will listen to this album - and then go out and do something to help them.

It's time to make a difference. It's time for total animal liberation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not metal, PUNK!, June 13, 2000
By
Brian Wilson (Portland, Oregon) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Destroy the Machines (Audio CD)
For one thing if you think this band is any kind of metal you're wrong. It's HARDCORE straight-edge PUNK! , and they're not Neo-Nazi punks either, you can tell by the lyrics, they're lyrics simply state (especially in this album)that they are fed-up with the ignorrant wrongs of modern day society and there needs to be changes.Although "Destroy the Machines" is an increadibly powerful album (lyrically),I find the music and melody to be somewhat slow and boring on a few tracks, but

they are heavy, and the lyrics have a lot of thought put into them. Good album, but in my opinion it's not as good as their 1996 release "Gommorrah's Season Ends," which is, in my mind, a true masterpiece.
