Book Description

Set after Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me and before Unravel Me, the spellbinding sequel, Destroy Me is a novella told from the perspective of Warner, the ruthless leader of Sector 45.

In Shatter Me, Juliette escaped from The Reestablishment by seducing Warner—and then putting a bullet in his shoulder. But as she'll learn in Destroy Me, Warner is not that easy to get rid of . . .

Back at the base and recovering from his near-fatal wound, Warner must do everything in his power to keep his soldiers in check and suppress any mention of a rebellion in the sector. Still as obsessed with Juliette as ever, his first priority is to find her, bring her back, and dispose of Adam and Kenji, the two traitors who helped her escape. But when Warner's father, the Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment, arrives to correct his son's mistakes, it's clear that he has much different plans for Juliette. Plans Warner simply cannot allow.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Gives Insight to Motives October 6, 2012

If you are reading the Shatter Me Series by Tahereh Mafi, then you have to read Destroy Me-Book 1.5 before your read Unravel Me-Book 2 (btw, I have not read book 2 yet). This defiantly changes your whole entire perspective of Warner and it would seem to me, that it would change how we will now view all of his actions in the future.
Destroy Me is just as well written as the first one and don't we all just love the idea of getting into the" bad guys" head! Of course, we know that if you were to look at any villain from a psychoanalytic point of view, there is most assuredly going to be some mommy and daddy issues. So yeah, let's just get it out there and talk about it. I mean, you're not just born the "bad guy". That obviously took years of neglectful and harsh crafting. You really do want horrible things to happen to Warner's dad when you are done reading this and Mafi might want to keep that in mind when she is wrapping this whole thing up...I'm just saying!
AND another thing, I do love the team lines that this draws for the series. People were intrigued by Warner before, but now I see that the ladies are loving him! Well, I guess a book is the safest place to fall for the "bad boy"! Personally, I am sticking with Adam. I was sold on him way back when he tells Juliette about remembering her from school. There's a guy with dedication!

Anyway, back to the nitty-gritty. This ebook also comes with extracts like a sample of Unravel Me and official paper work, forms and documents from Juliette's file and the Reestablishment. All very insightful. Kudos to Mafi for creatively giving us story exposition with topical flare!

4.0 out of 5 stars Step Into The Mind Of The Guy You Love To Hate October 5, 2012
By Leah
Format:Kindle Edition
NOTE: This review contains mild spoilers for SHATTER ME.

When we meet Warner in Tahereh Mafi's debut novel, SHATTER ME, he's a cunning, off the wall militant who wants to use the narrator, Juliette, as a weapon. Juliette has a deadly touch which can (and has) killed people. Warner did not expect to become obsessed with Juliette or have Juliette hurt him in a way he never expected. Now, in DESTROY ME, told from Warner's perspective, we see how her wounding him has shaken him yet not changed how he feels for her. In fact, you find out a lot more about him than you thought you did.

DESTROY ME caught me by surprise. I like a nice guy; Warner, however, is not. He has hurt people and taken lives. So I was surprised when I found myself hastily reading parts in SHATTER ME so I could find parts involving Warner. Was I out of my mind? He definitely has a few screws loose and I could not get enough of him. Then I read DESTROY ME and see the true Warner... and I was disappointed. He's still crazy, but not full out like he was in the first book. It felt like Ms. Mafi took the safe road when it came to this novella. I'm assuming getting hurt like he did probably got the screws back in, and that this change is going to cause some conflict for Juliette in the next book, UNRAVEL ME.

While I was saddened by this change in Warner, I am excitedly waiting for UNRAVEL ME. Let the dastardly guy make his appearance again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily the best e-novella I've read October 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A beautifully-written bridge between SHATTER ME and UNRAVEL ME (which releases Feb 2013), DESTROY ME is a delightful surprise: it's narrated from the POV of Warner, the ruthless and powerful leader who has been both Juliette's captor and tormentor, but who harbors a giant soft spot -- one might say Achilles heart -- for her, as well. That tension is what anchors and propels this propulsive book, through reams of inventive action sequences and aching descriptions tortured, forbidden longing, all set against a backdrop of a world that has cracked apart and been put back together again in a kind of dark funhouse mirror reflection of our own.

Fans of SHATTER ME will be struck by this book's very distinct tone, owing largely to Warner's incredibly distinct voice, tight and controlled and worlds away from that of Juliette's fractured madness. There are times when you'd hardly believe this book was written by the same woman who wrote SHATTER ME. Stylistically and as a weaver of plots, Mafi makes bold choices and commits to them, and the results are spectacular.

Which is to say: I liked it. Rather a lot. And I think you will, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Might've just fallen for Warner February 13, 2013

[...]

I usually don't get too excited over in-between novellas. The real action and meat happens in the full-length novels in the series, and I find that novellas are usually small stories about one character and one event that do add to the story, but aren't completely necessary when reading the series. I bought "Unravel Me", the second installment to the "Shatter Me" series by Tahereh Mafi, yesterday (check out the review here!), and came across "Destroy Me", a novella that's #1.5 in the series. When I read that it's told from the perspective of Warner, the supposed bad guy in the story, I decided to give it a go--it's always juicy to see things from another point of view!

Back at the base and recovering from his near-fatal gunshot wound, Warner must do everything in his power to keep his soldiers in check and suppress any hint of rebellion in his sector. Still as obsessed with Juliette as ever, his first priority is to find her, bring her back, and dispose of the two traitors who helped her escape, Adam and Kenji. Especially Adam. The one Juliette fell for. But when Warner's father, the Supreme Commander of the Reestablishment, arrives to correct his son's mistakes, it's clear that he has much different plans for Juliette. Plans Warner simply cannot allow.

There's something about a story told from a male perspective. Maybe it's because so many YA books out there are single-handedly narrated by the female heroine, but seeing things from Warner's point of view was exciting and different. Not to mention the fact that he's the villain in the series, which gave Ms. Mafi plenty to play with in terms of character development. I was surprised to see the real depth of Warner's feelings toward Juliette.
