"Destroy the Opposition" is, simply put, one of the most intense assaults on my ears I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. It's one of the heaviest albums known to man, but then plenty of albums are heavy. What makes Dying Fetus stand out is the fact that they're methodical and intelligent about their heaviness. 2.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed, turned off if anything.
Ok, I do like heavy metal albums, just read my other reviews on albums I have done. What people must, or I should say SHOULD know is that just because somebody likes heavy metal, DOESN'T mean that they will like every single metal band and album created, lol. In other words, I don't like dying fetus, I found them to have burping-like sounding vocals and the music did...

Technically, the band's onslaught is airtight. The drumming occasionally delivers the blast beats that are expected of any decent death/grind band, but there's also precision and variety to spare. The guitars, also, deliver a complexity and variety that easily matches that of bands like Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation. However, far from being a wankfest, "Destroy the Opposition" has more of a groove to it than the typical death metal album, and plenty of tempo changes to match. Vocally, John Gallager and Jason Netherton give the band a terrific two-vocalist approach, effectively balancing deep, throaty growls with more high-pitched screaming. Perhaps most impressively, the band delivers lyrics far more intelligent and meaningful than the death-and-Satan drivel peddled by bands like Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel (I mean, I like those bands, but some smarter lyrics would be nice). Dying Fetus intelligently address the ills of modern-day society, discussing such issues as religious zealotry, commercialism, the pressure to conform, and the shortcomings of America's democracy. Death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Vader, and Nile may get more attention, but Dying Fetus can hang with any of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Fetus Classic, September 2, 2003

Dying fetus return with their fourth full length album and first for the highly respected Relapse Records label, hopefully a label that will back this band, which despite regular line-up changes, is without doubt one of America's leading death metal bands.

Destroy the Opposition is nearly the perfect follow-up to the steamrolling masterpiece that was Killing On Adrenaline. I still believe that K.O.A has the slightest edge but Destroy the Opposition is another slab of superb technical death/grind. Featuring just one line-up change from their previous album (Sparky Voyles replaces Brian Latta on guitar), Dying Fetus deliver another brilliant opus full of slamming mosh riffs, crunching breakdowns, dazzling technicality and a skull-crunching dual vocal attack, all of which amounts to some high quality, catchy and brutal death metal with a hint of grind that will surely please long time fans while also allowing the band to expand their growing fanbase.

Reasons to purchase Destroy the Opposition: 1. The amazing drumming of Kevin Talley. Talley picks up from where he left off from his Dying Fetus debut on Killing On Adrenaline, with another incredible performance of tight, complex and varied skinbashing. Unbeatable!

2. The Riffs. Guitarist John Gallagher, with occasional assistance from Jason Netherton and Sparky Voyles, seems to have an endless amount of technical and catchy riffs up his sleeve, each Fetus release is chock full of them and with a nice thick production job combined with the amazing drumming of Kevin Talley it is a recipe for great death metal.

3. The vocals. Jason Netherton's mid-pitched, and sometimes decipherable barks and screams, contrast so well with the ultra-low growls/roars of John Gallagher, surely one of the finest examples of dual vocals in death metal/grindcore.

Destroy the Opposition is another triumph in the consistently oustanding Fetus catalogue, and would be a perfect starting point for any new fan.

Dying Fetus is one of the tightest goregrind/death metal bands out there. Their latest album, "Destroy the Opposition," completely blew me away. Compared most easily to old Cannibal Corpse, and Suffocation (especially the deep, gurgley vocals), these guys bring a new style of death metal with crushing guitars and double-pedal drums at back-breaking speed that makes it very heavy but offers diversity.

The dual vocals of John Gallagher and Jason Netherton add a dimension to the music that's been missing for awhile. The lyrics are intelligent and deals with the problems of society that catches the listener's interest.

Dying Fetus has taken two styles of music and made it their own. If you haven't gotten it yet, shame on you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fetus Kills!, October 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Destroy the Opposition (Audio CD)
Dying Fetus show us why they are the leaders of death metal with there newest and debut release on Relapse. This release seems to go more into the older style prevalent on Infatuation With Malevolence and Purification of Violence (but then again I don't have Killing On Adrenaline to do a direct comparison). The production is great and the dual vocals are once again a treat. The addition of Sparky Voyles adds even more technical greatness to this band. All you have to do is listen to Pissing In The Mainstream to hear that. The solos are great and the tone of the drums is one of the best I've heard. Definetely one of their best releases and a definite buy as soon as you see this.

It pretty apparent that this is their best offering except of course Infatuated with Malevolence, but this is very high quality throughout. If you are new to Fetus I'd start here and if you are a death metal fan and don't own this CD you are waved. KILLER CD!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, January 15, 2007
This review is from: Destroy the Opposition (Audio CD)
Yeah, I know, lack of a better title, but better than giving some Rolling Stone like title (you know, fruity).

This band rules, and this is the second catchiest death metal album (first still goes to Effigy Of The Forgotten). This band also is the only band that sounds like nothing else. Here's why:

1.Groove. Death metal has to have some of this, other wise, it sounds like complete _____. That's why I hate most metalcore. BEcause it's boring, uses the same damn beats. Most metalcore blows.
Some albums don't have as much, but all metal albums have to have at least a little bit. If it dosen't, it has a much harder time of being something that you can'enjoy for the actual music (okay, there are a few albums that got away with not alot and kick ___, like Obscura).

2.They have a really kick arse style. Grindcore mixed with regular death metal, and it dosen't sound like a Beck song.

3. Lyrics. Yeah, these guys have a name that most lame- half arsed Cannibal Corpse rip-offs, and they had two albums before this that used gore lyrics. But finally, they switched to political and social problems of America. Great to see that some bands aren't trying to make more gore lyrics. CC and others will handle that just fine. So if you want to try a metal band, focus on lyrics that take more thought, or haven't been used. Even if they are about death, you can't use different kinds of death themes (Nile)

That's the main thigns that made a difference to me. And it's awesome to headbang to. If you like death metal, than you should check it out. My only complaint are the vocals, they kind of aren't as good as Suffocation or Cryptopsy (Lord Worm rules).

5.0 out of 5 stars When tech death and brutal death collide, August 7, 2006
By
This review is from: Destroy the Opposition (Audio CD)
This band is like Deicide and Death mixed together with a touch of grind. They are like Cryptopsy: they are brutal and technical at the same time. This CD has brawns and brains. John Gallagher's low death barks can suddenly change to high pitched screams, and his intelligent songwriting is accompanied by his complex riffs. Sparky Voyle's riffs and solos will blow you away. Jason Netherton's basslines aren't that audiable, but they make the songs darker, along with his background vocals. Kevin Talley's drumming is amazing. Songs like "Born in Sodom" and "For Us or Against Us" show off their style, while "Pissing in the Mainstream" shows off their grind influences with weird guitarwork. This is a great death metal band that pleases both styles.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Force That Drives Through, January 29, 2006
This review is from: Destroy the Opposition (Audio CD)
This CD is just amazing. "Praise The Lord" is a classic song by this dynamic band, while "Pissing In The Mainstream" is just speedy and makes you wish you could play guitar like that. Overall, a must buy for fans of Suffocation, Origin, Cryptopsy, and any tech-death band of the like.

blasting death Drew (Albuquerque, NM USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Destroy the Opposition (Audio CD)
I must say that Dying Fetus has to be one of my faves of the Death/Grind genre. Unfortunately, I was one of those people who found out about Dying Fetus when Stop at Nothing was released. Then shortly afterwards I worked my way backwards through their catalog and bought the amazing "Destroy the Opposition" then I purchased "Killing on Adrenaline" and so on. I would reccommend buying any of the older Dying Fetus CD's first before buying "Stop at Nothing" that one kinda sucked. Onto the review, John Gallagher is one of those vocalists who send goosebumps down your spine. The guttural vocals are almost inhuman and sound like they came out of the pits of hell. He is one amazing guitarist and the rest of the band are amazing musicians as well. I believe Chimaira asked for the talent of Kevin Talley to do the drums for the new Chimaira record in the absence of Andols Herrick. Jason Netherton went on to make Misery Index a full time thing after "Destroy the Opposition." But I'm pretty sure you already knew that. Those who do not like death metal are like "Those bands have no talent...blah blah blah" I just give them a big slap in the face and throw on some Dying Fetus, or some Skinless or Guttural Secrete or Deeds of Flesh and then they pretty much shut up. So if you are a fan of EXTREME METAL of the most punishing kind, pick up all of Dying Fetus' albums along with the aforementioned bands as well.

If you are a fan of the genre then you will love this disc. It is a non stop Brutal Assault on your ears. Now since theses guy's have a habit of changing members on every album it should be interesting to see what the line up will be for 2007' If you want real true Brutal music the kind that you feel inside by this disc an unload on someone. Stay Brutal. HORNS UP!!!!!
