Destroyer Escorts at War!, September 27, 2008
This review is from: Destroyer Escorts in action - Warships No. 11 (Paperback)
One of the amazing WWII achievements of American industry was the design and construction of hundreds of destroyer escorts needed to protect Allied convoys worldwide. Over 560 DEs were built, serving in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, Royal Navy and the navies of France and Brazil. DEs compiled a combat record second to none. Al Adcock summarizes the Destroyer Escort story in this 1997 Squadron/Signal volume, #11 in their 'Warships' series.
Wartime DE construction fell into six classes: Evarts Class, Buckley Class, Cannon Class, Edsall Class, Rudderow Class and John C. Butler Class. Later in the war some DEs were converted into (APD) Fast Attack Transports or (DER) Destroyer Escort, Radar ships. Adcock explores each class, summarizing design features, combat report and postwar service. Among notable DEs were DE-635 USS England credited with sinking six Japanese subs in 1944 and DE-173 USS Eldridge which took part in the 'Philadelphia Experiment.'
General view and close-up photographs and drawings of various ships within each class along with drawings of weapons, radar installations, etc. nicely illustrate each class. The book features over 100 black & white shots. Don Greer contributes two color pages of ship profiles and front/back covers. His cover artwork, showing DE 401 being attacked by a Ju 88, is as stunning as it is realistic!
So, comprehensive text, tons of photos, great artwork and inexpensive price make DESTROYER ESCORTS IN ACTION a winner. Recommended.
