3.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing
I was really looking forward to this album as, for me, Blitzen Trapper are one of the more exciting bands that has come along in recent years. I have to say though that I was pretty disappointed with this one - just too many of the ballads/slower songs and not enough rock/guitars for my liking. I know BT do the softer stuff well, but I didn't want a whole album of it,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Song Writing, October 22, 2010

Just one great song after another. Yes, it's overall a bit mellower than some of their earlier stuff, but it still rocks in places and the quieter stuff absolutely shimmers. Although I can certainly hear what I imagine to be their influences (Beatles, Dylan, Petty...), they simply have great taste and in the end very much make it their own. Having seen them twice, I can also testify that they are a great live act with surprising power and raw energy. Plus they come across as nice sincere guys and they get excellent opening acts. Without a doubt, one of the best bands out there. Go ahead, become a fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Follow-Up to "Furr", September 18, 2010

This review is from: Destroyer Of The Void (Audio CD)
I am loving this album! My favorite songs, so far, are "Destroyer of the Void," "Heaven and Earth," and "Sadie." It's not as heavy and raw as "Furr" was--and I really love "Furr." It's got a polished feel to it. Another reviewer noted that there are many slower songs on this album, which there are, but the sound is wonderful and the songs really showcase the band's talent. Love this band, love the new album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Done, August 16, 2010

The only thing I'd heard from BT before picking up this album was the title track to "Furr." I'd heard this was a proggy update of their sound. And I've really enjoyed this album. The title track is the most adventurous, but there is some great 60's and 70's influence new folk here. Very solid work.

The negative reviews seemed to be from people who had previous work and say this is a step backwards. But as someone with very little previous exposure, this is quite a good album. I may go buy the earlier albums and compare.

I have to say though that I was pretty disappointed with this one - just too many of the ballads/slower songs and not enough rock/guitars for my liking. I know BT do the softer stuff well, but I didn't want a whole album of it, especially coming on the heels of the outstanding title track, which really does dwarf the rest of the material both in scope and execution. The rest of the album, unfortunately is too understated to really make an impact. It's still a nice album, but not the essential one I was hoping for, and not as good or as exciting as Furr.

5.0 out of 5 stars BT stays sharp, June 11, 2010

I have really been looking forward to hearing this new album. Its rockadellick. Blitzen Trapper, man they just kicked it up a notch for me this week on the way to work. I didn't feel like I was going to work, but to the wilderness. Why BT really makes me feel great is the way they really do just have a great lyrics in there songs. This album is just as good as Furr maybe better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent..not as good as Furr, July 16, 2010
This review is from: Destroyer Of The Void (Audio CD)
Too many slow boring songs. Furr is way better and it seemed like they barely had to try. Dude's vocals just sound off on this CD and i think they should have focused a little more on the instrumental aspect instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars An underrated and ignored treasure..., December 7, 2010
This review is from: Destroyer Of The Void (Audio CD)
I don't write reviews for albums too often, but when I saw how few reviews this album got, I had to speak up.

This album is quite possibly the best album of 2010.

Rather than whip out another album that sticks to what's worked in the past (like Arcade Fire did), Blitzen Trapper has catapulted their sound forward into something entirely different than Furr. This album is superior to Furr in almost everyway. The songs are carefully considered, structured, and effortlessly delivered. With Destroyer, Blitzen has offered the world a glimpse into how deep and diverse their influences are. Furr had some excellent singles, but it wasn't a very good album. As an album, Destroyer is cohesive and consistent from start to finish. And it's consistent in the most important way -- there isn't a bad song on the whole album.

Give this album a chance if you haven't already. It's not Furr. It's MUCH better.

5.0 out of 5 stars contender for record of the year, July 2, 2010

An ambitious but accessible album from one of the best bands to come out of the Pacific Northwest in a long while. Somehow these guys have managed to combine elements of Dylan, Bowie, Queen, The Grateful Dead, and Tom Petty and create something uniquely their own.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice followup to the awesome "Furr" album, June 24, 2010
This review is from: Destroyer Of The Void (Audio CD)
I love Blitzen Trapper. They are a nice indie band. And I think it's nice that they're getting recognition where I'm from. And their new album is out of this world!

The album is really good. Obviously not too groundbreaking. Not compared to an indie classic like "Mass Romantic{" or "Slanted & Enchanted." But it's a good album. And it doesn't try to be a good album. That's what makes it a good album.
