I bought this game souly on the fact that everyone hereon amazon has praised it as being a fabulous game.

Well, it's all right, but it needed a lot more to keep you interested after a while. I burst out laughing during my first race when I crashed and burned into someone, and I got 1st place for doing it! But, this game isn't as great as some have said. It's...

Ever play a racing game that got so boring, you just started crashing your car into walls or other cars to liven things up? In this game, that's the objective! In races, half the cars go in one direction and the other half go in the other direction. When the groups meet all heck breaks loose! The bigger the crash, the more points you get. There's also classic demolition derbys thrown in where a dozen cars are thrown into a circular arena and everyone battles it out to the bitter, bitter finish. There's also some cool multi-player games like bomb-tag and capture the flag which are hilarious when playing with your friends!

The best feature in this game is the selection of cars. When you start out, you can only choose from a group of basic race cars, but there are hidden cars such as a taxi, pickup truck, dune buggy, old fashioned hot rod, police car, and an ambulance, which is virtually indestructable! You get these cars by winning first place in championship races and using certain cars in different tracks in the time trial mode.

All around, this game's an A+!

I'm a 40 year old mother of two teenage boys that bought a Nintendo 64 and Destruction Derby for them to play with...guess what? I'm playing it as much or more than they are! My husband and I play for hours and get the kids to join us. This is a supremely fun game that will keep us laughing and enjoying our time together for the winter months ahead.

There are many ways to play the game, especially with the multiplayer option. My favorite is "bomb-tag" where you are trying to avoid the person that got stuck with the bomb. If you keep the bomb..boom!. This one got the most noise out of everyone playing. Also, it's always fun to get to the next level and see what kind of new car you're going to get. There is a Volkswagen beetle that is fun to play just for the amazing stunts it can pull. This is so much more than just a race or demolition derby game.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite games, April 18, 2001

I rented this game once, and every day I played it probably for at least an hour a day. Its the only Nintendo game I've heard of with visible damage. I have the latest Gameshark, so I just unlocked all the cars and tracks first thing--my favorite is the ambulance--it's slow but extremely durable. A tip--press the z button to look behind your car and go backwards--many times your back end is more durable so you'll take less damage while hitting other cars.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME GAME, April 10, 2000

Me and my brother rented this game one weekend and after we played it the first time, we didn't think it was that great. But we didn't have anything else to do, so we both tried playing it one player and we found out it was actually a good game. Your main objective is to crash into the other cars and get enough points to get to the next level in one player mode. But while you're making other cars blow up, you also have to keep going in order to make it to the checkpoint before you run out of time. Also in some levels, you don't have to worry about making it to a checkpoint because it's true destruction derby; you only have to get enough points to come in 1st place to get to the next level. That's what makes Destruction Derby 64 different and better than most other car games. If you're in first place when your car blows up, it counts as 1st place for that level.

Destruction Derby 64 has good graphics, control, sound, it's fun once you get the hang of it, and most of all it has replay value. There are many hidden vehicles that you can get by coming in first place on certain tracks which makes the replay value skyrocket through the roof. Another good attribute that this game has that sets it apart from others is that it's almost as easy to drive backwards and know where you're going as it is to just race and crash frontwards. After you get most of the hidden vehicles, this game will never get old playing it multiplayer. Get out there and cause some destruction!

It's OK to drive the circuits or do the demolition derby in the arena, but I have gotten tired of it, so sorry to whoever said you wont get bored with this game, I did!

There isn't enough tracks, there isn't enough cars, and it really needs more in the game. It needs a proper race, without the demolition, you can do a time trial, but I want a proper race with all the cars. There also needed to be an option to turn the check points off... I just wanna turn around and go the other way for something different, but once you run out of time, it's game over. Also, it needed something else, like in Mario Kart where you get the shells to throw, or the boosters/nitros, or things to lay booby-traps on the track... this game really needed something like that.

Currently Nintendo has managed to bring out a Gameboy that's pretty much a compact SNES/N64. So if they release this game again, lets hope they add more to it.

Two player mode is OK. Most of what the reviews here say are true, the bomb tag is the best, but it sucks that there is only about 4 tracks to compete in.

All there is, is Arcade. Where you race the first race of the tournament, and that's it.
Tournament, or championship mode or something where you race about 5 tracks and a couple of demolition derby's.
Time trials.
And then 2 player with normal, destruction, bomb-tag and flag .. there needed to be heaps, heaps more included.

I believe if THQ had made another version, it would be the same as the difference between WCW REVENGE & WWF NO MERCY.. the extras just separate the two completely.

This game is ok. Good for 2 player. Not too bad in the graphics and controls. But it just needs more in it.

yep ya guessed it!you get in a car and crash every other car to bits in various arenas.you can win more of them later.each with thier unique capabilities.some are fast, some are strong etc.the most well protected one is the ambulance for in destruction derby mode.if racing, take the hot rod.if you cant handle it,try the rocket.during the actual game, you race against time .but theres also a bunch of other cars racing also.you get points by damaging other vehicles and by making checkpoints.each time you make one,you get more time.however the time is less and less every time.eventualy all cars will be destroyed or you will not make your time.playing here is how you win other cars or in time trial.i just use codes.this game is great un the whole family can enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars N64 Classic!, August 27, 2011

This game is an oldie, but I seem to keep on forgetting I still have my old Nintendo 64 and that I've never had this game in my collection (mind you, it isn't vast, but I plan on it to be soon). I remember being a kid of ten maybe, I'm now in my twenties, and that I used to rent this game all the time, because it was so fun. Being an exceptionally better player than I was back then this game is worth it. Here's some pros and cons:

Pros:

This may be a con to some, but it's a pro to me, but it's not your average racing game. You don't go around a track and blah, blah. This game goes by who can cause the most damage. You get points for everytime you hit someone and the more damage you cause the more points you get. You get well over 100 points (I think?) if you "kill" someone which results in an explosion. The game ends when you "kill" the last person or you "die" yourself in the end. Whoever did the most damage wins. The maps are innovative, like you have your average around the track race, a few deomolition derby tracks, your futuristic track, a place that somewhat looks like a haunted mansion, etc. As for the Championship Mode where you can unlock other maps, cars, etc. it get's harder as you get going. I mean, I'm not the best gamer out there, far from it, but I can say it does get challenging as you go down the ranks.

Cons:

The graphics, well let's be honest, this game is ten years old, so you can't compare this game to say a game of today. So the graphics are kind of...crappy. I mean the maps are innovative, but everything looks blocky and if you hit something it doesn't interact at all. It's not going to impress the purists of gamers, because we all know it's all about the way graphics look these days. The other problem I see is that the tracks are too wide, so it's a bit harder to try and swerve to hit someone to try and gain points. Other than that, those are my only problems with it.

Final word: What can I say? I saw this on here the other day and my inner child screamed to me to buy it. I did and now it's apart of my collection. The replay value is high and I think anyone who tries this will like it.
