About the Author

When I was eight years old back in 1973, I would read each month’s Spiderman comic book from cover-to-cover. I identified with Peter Parker’s struggles and also the fact that by the end of each story his problems weren’t necessarily solved or resolved. This was in contrast to TV shows where the Brady and Partridge Family kids’ problems seemed to be resolved almost instantly. My problem in third grade was that everyday the kid sitting behind me in school came up with a variation on how to tease me about my first name. "Howard the coward", "Howie Wowie" and "How" were just a few of many names I heard each week. I made the mistake of not talking about being bullied with my parents because I figured it would stop eventually, the kid bullying me would start to pick on someone else and, most of all, I thought I was being brave by keeping it to myself. I was wrong on all three counts. The key to stopping bullying is communication. To all the kids reading this book, if you are being bullied by anyone, talk to your Mom and Dad or teacher(s) about it immediately. Thinking that you’re being tough or courageous by keeping it to yourself or thinking that somehow it’s your fault that you are being picked on is wrong. The bravest thing you CAN do is talk about it. Hiding it or thinking it will magically go away will only make it worse. And parents, if your child is being bullied do not hesitate to talk to your child’s teacher(s), principal or guidance counselor. They are there to help and they have the resources and policies in place to resolve a bullying problem. I thank you very much for reading this book and I’d like to leave you with one last thought. This is especially for the kids. When I was having problems at school, I used to dream that Spiderman or Batman would show up at my school and that they’d help me solve, or give me the guidance to solve whatever problem I was having. But I didn’t realize then, but I know now, that I already had the two greatest super heroes who would help me if I simply asked them to, my Mom and Dad. Howard Shapiro

5.0 out of 5 stars Empowering children to stand up for themselves!, August 8, 2006
This review is from: Destructo Boy & Spillerella...We Are Who We Are! (Paperback)
Empowering children to stand up for themselves, yet a reminder that they can ask for help if they need to, is the overall message of this new book! This is a great book to help children see that they can stand up for themselves without being equally as hurtful as the bully. A must read for children and a good tool for parents to start a dialogue with their children about how to defuse a bully!
