This portable hand vac worked quite well considering I had my doubts about it capabilities. I started off by using it on smaller, light pieces such as cat fur and small dust bunnies. It worked like a charm. Then it was onto medium sized and moderately heavier pieces like food crumbs (due to eating crackers and pretzels in bed). My bed was more comfortable that evening. Finally I tested it on pieces of glass, (after accidently dropping one on the floor). Well, I must say that this "little devil" really pulled (sucked) it's own weight !! I'm so pleased with it that I'm buying another to keep in my car. The only con that this product has is its built-in dust cup which needs emptying frequently enough for it to be somewhat of a nuisance. All in all, I say it's worth its value. Heck, I've spent my money on worst things!! I like this product very much and have told my friends and family about it.

This is a great little vacuum, just don't expect miracles from it. I use it to suck up dust and cat hair from my computer desk, and it does a great job. I haven't used it for much beyond that, and wouldn't expect it to do much more. Mind you, it has done a great job of picking up any little bits of paper, crumbs, dirt, etc., that I've thrown at it. Just don't purchase this vacuum with the idea of using it as a mini shop vac.

I've found the battery to last longer than I'd expect. I haven't charged it in about a month, with quick daily uses, and it keeps going. Note that the unit gets pretty warm when left on the charger 24/7. I don't think it is too much of a concern, but I'd be wary of leaving papers on top of it for a long time.

I've seen others complain about the on/off button being a push-and-hold design, but I actually like it. Basically, you have to hold the power button down in order for it to work. I like how you just hold the button down, give the area to be cleaned a quick pass, then let go of the button. I wouldn't have a problem with a normal on/off button, but I don't miss it, either.

The receptacle has to be emptied often, but that's mostly a characteristic of the device's small size. It really is a perfect fit for your hand. At least the receptacle is pretty easy to empty. I've had similar vacuums in the past where opening the receptacle was nearly impossible, and they had a near-identical receptacle design.

I appreciate the slick design of the unit. Most vacuums of this size tend to be pretty plain and/or ugly. The modern look, with the smoke-colored receptacle, is very nice. I have no problem leaving this vacuum mounted on the wall in my office.

All in all, it's a very handy little vacuum to have sitting around.

The Dirt Devil Detailer is a small vacuum that can used for minor jobs around your home or auto.

* NOTE* In the video I mention that you "See" the Dirt Devil Detailer scaring my animals. I decided to edit that part out of the review - Our cat came in the room during filming and became a bit jumpy when I turned the Detailer on.

Things that we enjoy about the Dirt Devil Detailer

- Nice and compact
- Recharging base
- Brush attachment is ideal for cleaning keyboards

Areas for improvement

- As others have mentioned it is limited by its power. Will not be effective for anything other than small jobs
- A little loud for its size

Final Verdict - Not bad for small jobs - like cleaning the vents in your car or vacuuming up the crumbs on your keyboard. However, for any job that is larger you will need a more powerful option.

I was suprised to see this little guy picks up everything you throw its way. I have tried other so called "computer vacuums" that don't work at all. However this one works well. As well as being powerful it is easy to clean and you see the results as you work. With the see through dirt collection chamber you can visually see the results of your labor. This piece is easy to detach and dump into your closest trash can. Overall this is a superior product in its class.

This was a replacement for a slightly different, older model Dirt Devil that lasted for years & gave me good service. The model I now have was purchased in May 2010 and has not been used much. I use it very infrequently, mostly on my computer.

I have a problem with this newer, improved model. When I press the "on" button it comes on strongly, but within a few seconds loses power so much that it won't vacuum dust up. But, if I press the "on" button harder, or shift the point of maximum pressure to a slightly different place on the "on" button, the power gets stronger, but then quickly subsides to a low level. The result is that it's frustrating and essentially I can't usefully vacuum with it. It drives me nuts as I try different ways of pressing on the "on" button in an attempt to vacuum something up, and it just wants to run in a very low power way that can't vacuum even dust up.

I'm guessing that the battery is not the problem, but rather the problem is something to do with the "on" switch. I don't know. I sent an email to the Dirt Devil people. If they take care of this problem I'll post that info. Otherwise... Maybe I just got a lemon?
