Book Description

December 7, 2010
When you think about decorating, you probably envision big changes, big purchases, and big costs. Interior stylist Lili Diallo has two words for you: Start small. She specializes in bringing homes alive through the details—a silvery pillow here, a floral screen there, and plenty of personality everywhere.
Stylists typically transform spaces by working with pieces that are already present, and their goal is to translate the residents’ stories and passions into their surroundings. Details teaches you how to find your very own design story by focusing on which colors, textures, and objects make you feel most at home. You’ll also learn how to reimagine familiar objects and how to transform an area just by adding one key piece, such as a bright yellow rug that softens a room’s midcentury modern furniture.
Inspiration streams through hundreds of stunning photos. Taking a cue from Dorothy Draper, one apartment dweller uses a classic color scheme as a starting point but adds her own original, personal touch to the space with sleek lamps and a metallic coffee table. In another home, a crystal cherry blossom chandelier and a coat of gray paint transform a small kitchen into a glamorous and soothing ice-storm scene. Glazed bowls and English country patterns set the tone in the Manhattan apartment of a die-hard gardener whose spacious terrace is a floral wonderland in the warmer months. Glimpses into the residences of fashion tastemakers and interior designers reveal how to blend finds from IKEA, eBay, flea markets, and high-end antiques stores for effortlessly quirky character. Above all, within these pages you will discover how to edit your beloved belongings and arrange a room so there’s just charm, no clutter.
Equally enjoyable to read as it is to look through, Details is infused with Lili’s joie de vivre and encouragement. With hundreds of design secrets on everything from salon-style art hangings to adding the final dash of style with flowers, Details will teach you how to tap into your own inner stylist.

3.0 out of 5 stars Do you like hip, young, edgy, urban style? December 29, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I bought this book for myself for Christmas, as I wanted to know how a stylist turns ordinary into extraordinary.

And I loved the pink fuschia sofa on the cover against the brilliant blue.

If you love hip, young, edgy, authentic, gritty, bohemian, eclectic style and love shopping Ebay, flea markets or finding furniture on the street, or if you're an artist and live in Brooklyn or NYC, you may adore this book. Style is an expression of personality, so if this matches your personality, consider buying the book.

If the above doesn't describe you, you may not appreciate the rooms. Some of the rooms in this book I found wonderful, but some of them were too "eclectic" and lacked focus for me. This is a niche style that may not appeal to the average design aficionado, unless they love this style. It does fit the current trend of reusing, refurbishing and recycling furniture which I love. If you like the Apartment Therapy blog, you'll find it interesting..

Some of the author's ideas in here were wonderful, and there were a few rooms I'd like to show to design classes I team-teach--however, if we could have seen the principles and tips the author/stylist utilizes demonstrated on an ARRAY of styles, the book would have wider appeal I humbly believe.

Some of the useful tips:

* Select a screen upholstered in fabric to warm the space, one in lacquered wood to add a chic edge & select an elegantly tall and thin screen to dress up or hide a tiny dysfunctional corner

* When styling vignettes, group objects by a loose narrative--color palette, theme etc.--and then add
something totally unrelated (such as purple wildflowers) to stave off predictability.

4.0 out of 5 stars A dose of inspiration. March 16, 2011
While I will admit I had very high expectations for this book, I wasn't too let down. Lili Diallo has a taste that may not be for all, but if you enjoy a dash of whimsy and a sprinkling of "undone" you may enjoy this book. I don't think I would use it as a guide, but rather just inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the Book July 2, 2011
I love this book. It is inspiring and fun and is not about expensive furniture and stuffy decorating techniques. It is about expressing personality and individual style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delivers January 27, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The book has great photographs and cute tips and tricks. I don't agree with previous reviewers in that it only caters to an eclectic sense of style. Yes, there is an emphasis on repurposing and so on. It has a bit of everything, and true inspiratin can come from anywhere. In conclution if you are lokoing for a book full of interesting rooms, this is it. If you are looking for a book on a spesific type of style and only that, this is not it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enter The Mind Of The Stylist February 25, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
To be honest I purchased this book after having seen it in a picture on Emily Henderson's blog. I love her HGTV show 'Secrets From A Stylist' and that is the only reason I purchased the book. I have found that I love witty and eclectic design. Why shouldn't our homes reflect humor, life is serious enough. I also love shopping at flea markets, thrift stores and the Salvation Army for treasures, just as much as I enjoy shopping at West Elm, Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters. Perhaps that's why this book appealed so much to me but I don't think you have to be interested in these things for this book to appeal to you. If you have an appetite for interior design, styling or learning about this art form then this book is for you. The information is applicable whatever your aesthetic.
