Coping with Outliers, October 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Detect and Handle Outliers (Advances in Soil Science) (Paperback)
How to Detect and Handle Outliers is the last volume in a series of 16 books dealing with statistical techniques in quality control. The book is targeted for people in quality control whose job is to analyze data. The book is meant to be a both a "practical introduction to the statistical treatment of outliers and as a stepping stone to more-comprehensive and more-technical treatments of the subject".
Research is ongoing into statistical methods and Hoaglin and Iglewicz cover a small group of methods, which are "most suitable for application". The book covers outliers in 1) single and multiple samples, 2) linear regression and 3) factorial experiments.
I have read statistical books on experimental designs to collect data (such as Understanding Industrial Experimentation by Donald J. Wheeler) and evaluating sets of data (such as Evaluating the Measurement Process by Donald Wheeler and Richard Lyday). However, this is my first book dealing specifically with outliers. There is a short section on outliers in Quality Assurance of Chemical Measurements by John K. Taylor, but it is not very comprehensive.
