I'm a consumer that is willing to pay extra for quality, especially for durable goods that I might own for twenty years or more. I purchased the Detecto D350 because it looked as though it was a notch above the rest in terms of quality, and the reviews seemed to reflect this. I disagree. I understand the accuracy of a mechanical scale may be affected by things like temperature and humidity, but the unit I received need to be adjusted constantly while being used in a climate controlled setting. At times the needle seemed to stick at points above or below zero, making it difficult to calibrate. After returning this scale I purchased a quality, no-frills digital scale from a popular superstore chain for $30 that I have been very satisfied with. The only positive thing I can say about this scale is that the return process went smoothly. Thanks Amazon!

Unit comes in a very sturdy casing, reads weight very consistently, has easy to read dial, and is attractive in the bathroom. Only drawback, I wish the footpad was a little larger. I have a size 10 shoe, any larger would be tough to stand evenly on the scale for an accurate reading.

I hated these new digital step-on scales! Every time I stepped on it was another weight; it could be off by 10 pounds. This scale consistently tells you what you weigh (even if you're not happy with what it says). The only improvement it could use is to have a more clear dial. I have to have my distance glasses on to read it (the pound markers are so close to each other)!

I purchased this product because the description of the scale indicated it had a 'large raised dial' to facilitate seeing the weights. The large raised dial is an accurate description. However because the numbered weight designations are listed in 10 lbs increments it is very difficult to read the weight in the mid-ranges (eg. 193, 194,195,196,197) as such it becomes a less than useful scale. How simple it would have been to lengthen the 5 lbs increment line (and therefore offer another point of reference) so that those mid-range numbers could be more accurately discerned. If I were buying again, I would look elsewhere for a better readout system.

I've been using scales in the 20 to 70 dollar range for years with mixed results, digitals, mechanicals even the one at the gym (nice scale but the calibration schedule always fell way behind the use and abuse) This is a scale I can appreciate, it's sturdy and accurate and looks it, but doesn't cross the line where you seem to be be building a gym locker room in your bathroom. Itt's attractive enough for a an efficient appliance. just wish I'd bought one a while ago and could have skipped the weight reading changing of 3 to 5 pounds difference in one hour intervals from some of my old scale.

This model would never reset to 0, no matter how many time I re-zeroed (if that is a word?). I have detecto stand up models in my office and them to be very reliable. Not sure, if I just got a lemon. Returned unit, bought a Salter and worked just fine for half the money

UPDATE: I fixed it, so I'm bumping it up to 4 stars (from 3). It turns out that it was simply adjusted *way* negative with the adjustment dial for about -120 pounds. I have no idea why this scale lets you adjust the needle to be -120 pounds (and even further), or how it got there, but that was the only problem. It's now working fine again. I can deal with the other flaws as long as it basically works.

---------------------------
I owned the scale for two weeks before it broke. It's permanently stuck at 240, now. I called Detecto just now and the don't manufacture it, they just sell it, so repair isn't even an option. They would simply offer a replacement, and if they determine that customer damage was the cause, then they would charge at least 50% of the list price to replace it. The tech said the list price is $149 (not $211 like Amazon says.) So that would be at least $75 to replace it if that determination was made. Plus I'd need to pay for shipping. This doesn't seem worth it.

Mine may actually have been damaged since I moved two weeks after I bought it. Who knows what the movers did to it. It was not in a box. There's no physical damage to the outside of the unit, and the tech said that they would have had to drop something very heavy on it for it to break. There's no evidence of that, and yet it doesn't work now.

Regardless of it breaking, it wasn't that great to begin with. I could get it to go to zero with the dial, but it would not return to zero exactly. It would return to 3 or -3 or something in that range. The adjustment dial itself is flaky. Not only does it rotate like you'd expect, but it can also be pulled up and down a few degrees since it feels loose. This also adjusts the zero point. It's easy to move it up and down by accident when trying to rotate it. I don't know why it moves so freely up and down or why this movement causes the zero point to change.

Seems sturdy on the outside, but the inside is plastic and cheap. Made in China. I paid a lot of money for this and it broke in 7 months. Needle now points straight up and there is no way to open it up to try to fix it. Waste of money if you ask me.
