I would highly recommend Glisten to safely clean the hardwater stains from your dishwasher. After one use, my year old dishwasher looked like new. I plan to use this product periodically to keep it clean and functioning well. It even cleaned out the food trap that was gunked up with grease and wouldn't come clean with a good scrub. From what I can tell, Glisten is relatively safe. Its active ingredient is citric acid, which must be handled with care since it can cause irritation. But at least it's not some heavy duty chemicals that will poison the environment and my family.

This stuff is unbelievable! I have hard, sulphur water that has left a build-up of mineral deposits in my dishwasher from years of use. I got the other brand, Dishwasher Magic, which I thought worked well, but it left an orange-ish colored waxy deposit on the bottom that wouldn't come off. I saw this on Amazon and decided to try it. I have a septic tank, so I'm always looking to go as natural as possible with anything going down the drain. I got this, used it twice now, and a lot of the waxy build-up from the other brand is gone along with all brown tinge of the mineral deposits! I've just ordered more to be sure the dishwasher is always sparkling clean, as it should be. It's also a lot cheaper than the Dishwasher Magic brand!!!

After top reviews in a leading consumer magazine, I decided to give the product a try. I mainly purchased it to remove the cloudy build-up on my drinking glasses and baking dishes (Pyrex and Anchor brands). The stainless steel inside of my dishwasher was left sparkling clean, but not my glassware. Also, I did not like the chemical smell residue left in my drinking glasses. The product removed some of the cloudy residue on the glassware, but what I did not realize was that much of the cloudiness was due to mineral etching and is permanent. The manufacturer of Glisten clearly states on the lable that it "will not remove etching from glassware". Glisten removes cloudiness caused by hardwater build-up only.

I have since learned that what I should have done, prior to purchasing this product, was to do a test on a clouded glass. Soak the glass in vinegar for 5 minutes. If the cloudy deposits are removed, then hard water is your problem and try this product. However if the vinegar soak does not help - the glass is etched and permanently damaged...time to buy new glassware.

Ironically, my glassware was etched by softened water in my home. I had purchased a water softener to address the hard water problem in our area, but the softener was not properly calibrated and the household water was too soft and damaged my glassware over time. I had been blaming the hard water, now I know better.

We moved into a home with very hard well water in E. Washington. It took only about a week for our pristine glasses and dishware to get covered with a white chalky substance that was impossible to get off and continued to accumulate on our dishes. I assume this is calcium from the well water. I looked online and tried every suggestion I read...a quality rinse agent in our dishwasher, soaking dishes in vinegar, scrubbing all the dishes with Bar Keepers Friend and nothing really worked. I ordered Glisten as a last ditch effort, but was doubtful it would succeed. I emptied the entire package (per the directions) on the bottom of a loaded dishwasher and washed them in a normal cycle. I was elated to open the dishwasher and find my dishes nice and slick, glasses perfectly clear, stainless steel was shiny, dishwasher itself was also clean and free of scale! SO happy. I also used in our new clothes washer to clean it. I am buying several more boxes right now and plan to use it on the dishes once a month.

After use, new loads seem to be cleaned better.

Just don't use it on a load of dishes (run it empty or w/ things you don't eat from). Some of our glasses taste like chalky lemon. This is resolving after 1-2 non-Glisten rewashes.

When we relocated from the East Coast to the Midwest, we encountered hard water and spots for the first time. We tried Cascade, homemade vinegar remedies and a few specialized detergents. This is the ONLY thing that has worked!

Love it.

If your dishes and glasses have gone white because of lime and minerals on them, you should try this product. It may take twice to get a satisfactory result depending on how persistent lime minerals are on your dishes. Worth trying!
