"An excellent overview of the history and future of deterrence." -- Naval War College Review
"Perhaps the best critique of proliferation is to be found in Deterrence in the Second Nuclear Age, even though Keith Payne does not write directly about the subject. Payne argues that, in what he calls 'the second nuclear age,' the character of deterrence has changed. More important still, he offers some tentative steps toward developing effective deterrence policies for this new era." -- Orbis
"Masterful analysis." -- Airpower Journal

This review is from: Deterrence in the Second Nuclear Age (Paperback)
A great contribution to the much needed discussion of nuclear deterrence, both the history and future.
As we transition from a world with one or two potential nuclear adversaries to a world with several large nuclear arsenals, a number of countries with small arsenals and the possibility that a non state organization might obtain functioning nuclear weapons the problems of deterrence becomes far more complex. The author does a great job walking the reader through the jungle. The downside of the book is that it may cause some sleepless nights. Highly recommended.
