2.0 out of 5 stars The Deluxe has nothing special about it
Well I just bought the "deluxe" Dethalbum II and there is nothing Deluxe about it. The advertised bonus tracks are no where to be found and the DVD is recycled music videos from the cartoon. I'm really pissed because what they advertised was a 14 track CD with 52 minutes of bonus footage from the 2008 tour. Not 12 tracks with crap from the cartoon I already have on season...

In a recent scientific study 99.98% of people listening to Dethalbum II die... instantly... in a bloody explosion. Survival rate after initial exposure is nominal as long as you head bang constantly.

As for the album:

- Nathan Explosion graces us with some high pitched growls. Probably the most common cause of instant deth associated with listening to the album.
- Skwisgaar makes "demonically fast" seem like "unicornally slow" with his supreme command of a guitar. My fingers bleed just listening to the album.
-Not sure if Toki even plays on this album.
-Murderface made all sandwiches that were consumed during the making of this album and it really shows. He makes a brutal sandwich.
-Pickles never disappoints. What he lacks in hair he makes up in 16th note double bass pedal beats.

As for the bonus DVD:

Sure we don't get bonus songs but we must be thankful for what Dethklok did give us. A whole set of brutal music videos. These contain original animations that were never shown on Metalocalypse. Murmaider, Hatredcopter and Thunderhorse are extremely brutal. The Murmaider music video is the single most brutal and amazing video my eyes have ever seen.

As for the songs:

-Bloodlines: Gets you really hooked into the album. If you don't feel like you've been punched in the stomach after listening to this song you must be some kind of God.
-The Gears: Just when you thought you could get a break from the metal think again. By now your neck should start getting sore.
-Burn The Earth: The solo in this song demands air guitaring. Only your worthless hands will be able to only match 2% of the notes.
-Laser Cannon Deth Sentence: The main riff of this song is brutal.
-Black Fire Upon Us: The slowest song on the album. This will probably be your local high school's slow dance song for all of the school dances.
-Dethsupport: most people must be put on life support at this point in the album... therefore the appropriate song title.
-The Cyborg Slayers: My only complaint about this song is that my ears are not efficient enough to hear all of the notes during the solo. Hopefully my cyborg masters will give me a cybernetic implant...
-I Tamper With The Evidence At The Murder Site Of Odin: Valhalla recently gained the rights to use this song for their alarm clocks to get everyone in a killing mood first thing in the morning.
-Murmaider II: The Water God: Sequel? Check. Brutal? Check. Shredding? Check. Metal? Check. Mermaid? Check. Murder? Check.
-Comet Song: What can be more brutal than a fiery deth from above.
-Symmetry: This song carries us to the end of the album with a brutal riff... making us feel like we've been chopped into two perfectly symmetrical pieces.
-Volcano: If you've made this far into the album you're doing pretty good. Don't let your guard down because you could very well die before listening to the entire album. Brutal end to a brutal album.

If you've made it through a listen, repeat over and over into oblivion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can a "fake" band save mainstream metal? I think it's possible, October 16, 2009
This review is from: Dethalbum II Deluxe Version (CD + DVD) (Audio CD)
Dethklok, a "fake" band from the Adult Swim series "Metalocalypse" has released their 2nd CD, Dethalbum II. The first Dethalbum was a fun little CD to play for your friends and joke around about how it was based on a cartoon band, Dethalbum II is a completely different monster. Is Dethklok a novelty band? Yes. Do they have some outlandish lyrics and song titles? Yes, but then again, no more than some of the more popular metal bands that have been around for years now. Is Dethalbum II a CD to just write off as a joke? Not at all. When listening to this cd after the first one, you actually hear growth from the band as musicians. This Cd is full of catchy riffs and drum beats that you can't really help but enjoy. Sure the lyrical content isnt going to win Brendan Small a Grammy for songwriting, but turn on your local Rock radio station and listen to what those bands have to say. Trust me, it isn't any better. Now before I get a bunch of negative comments, I am in no way saying that Dethklok is the next Pantera or Slayer or Metallica, so settle down. What I am saying is that it's sad that a band like this will immediately get written off because it's not a real band, while bands with far less talent get platinum records and sell out arenas all over the world because the radio forces them down our throats.(I'm looking at you "Disturbed") That being said, Dethalbum II is a really solid metal cd. It deserves a chance to be heard by any fan of metal, no matter what your favorite band may be. Don't discredit the band because it's from a cartoon, listen with an open mind and you just might be surprised in the end

After the first Dethalbum I could not imagine them topping that, but Brendon Small has outdone himself.
This album has more intricate layers of rhythm guitar and more symphonic effects. The videos somewhat console me for missing the live tour. Getting the deluxe edition for almost 1 hr of music videos was well worth it in my opinion.
Anyways, I can't stop listening to this album and I think my ears are bleeding as I'm typing this review.

Even better than the first! If you liked the original Dethalbum the second won't let you down! The songs and lyrics are noticably more complex and refined. The deluxe edition is essential. for the mere extra two dollars you get a bonus DVD! Well worth the price. Without a doubt the best album relesed this year!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, November 1, 2009
This review is from: Dethalbum II Deluxe Version (CD + DVD) (Audio CD)
I have never been so surprised in my life. The first album was fun but in a generic tribute to classic metal kind of way.

Dethalbum II is a full on Original sounding album by The Fictional band and my god it rules. The drumming by Hoglan blows my mind every time I listen to this not to mention the awesome riffs and solos. Buy now if you're a fan of Immortal, Cannibal Corpse, In Flames, Carcass, Obituary, Iron Maiden, Tallica.

Dethklock's the Dethalbum II is a great follow up to the DethAlbum. The bonus dvd is worth the couple extra bucks and like the show Metalacolypse I just can't get enough. The only complaint that I have is this album is shorter than the first one.

4.0 out of 5 stars As a fan, how could you be disappointed?, October 14, 2009

There's been a lot of complaints that the album didn't contain bonus tracks or more additional extras, something which many people felt was advertised on this deluxe edition. I'm here to tell you this is a great deluxe edition. Even with a few minor shortcomings, how could you ask for more? The album and DVD come in a shiny silver digipak, when you stare directly at it, it'll reflect your own face. On the left is your album with a big serpent on it, in the middle is the folder with all the lyrics, and on the right is the DVD with a rider on a great (thunder?) horse. The album contains twelve songs (all from the second season), and the DVD fourteen music videos (all from the first season). That's exactly what you'll be getting - no less, no more. That's almost exactly two hours of Dethklok content in one small package.

Musically, the album is everything we've come to expect from Dethklok - thunderous, frantic and sometimes hilarious, with some pretty sweet guitar solos. "The Gears" is a great fan-anthem, "Burn The Earth" is a crushing tune on the dangers (or joys) of polluting the planet, "Deth Support" is a perfectly poignant satire on two very current issues: the right to die with dignity and the economy / health care situation. Another standout song is "Murmaider II: The Water God", a completely new song that complements the original "Murmaider" in a fantastic way, sonically as well as lyrically. The rest of the album isn't bad either (and doesn't fail to deliver some great death metal), but it doesn't have the same impact overall. Overall, "Dethalbum II" feels much like the second season of the show; it's not bad at all, but it's starting to harp on the same chords, and doesn't have the same power to surprise and delight.

The DVD contains fourteen music videos (or technically thirteen, since "Fansong" plays over a static Dethklok logo), with a few funny interludes by the band and associated characters. It's a great visual representation of almost the entire first album, with a few videos that are "extended" from their show counterparts, and some that are entirely new. The animation ranges from somewhat simplistic, to frantically flashing and probably epilepsy-inducing, to overall good "story"-music videos. The bottom line is that, if you're a Dethklok fan, you won't be disappointed by this hour-long show. The music is great, there's some humor, and the songs are represented very well.

Three strong stars for the album, and the DVD pushes it up to a four overall. If you're expecting the world, keep looking. If you're simply a Dethklok fan, don't miss out.

Ok first off having been a metalhead for over 2 decades let me get my 2 cents in...this is a far better album than the 1st in every extent....it has far more technicality, musical quality, sound quality and personality. Nathan's new vocal approach may be different as it never debuted till just now but it's a welcome addition in my eyes and gives the songs it makes it more feeling and far more personality....while I did kind of look down at the fact there were no bonus tracks or live photage I will not take away from the final score of this because all in all you get something more than the original album for a mere 2 dollars more...a DVD with 12 music videos on it for which is mostly quite interesting....with full length videos for Dethklok classics like "Thunderhorse" and "Mermaider"....it's a welcome addition but 2 extra songs and live photage would've been better still....ok back to the cd it starts off with the Sepultura sounding "Bloodlines" a good mid tempo song with a memorable guitar rythm that'll stick in your mind for awhile yet....then you have "The Gears" my personal fave song on the cd with it's catchiness intact and headbanging beat.....then followed by great tracks "Burn the Earth" the incredibly fast "Laser Cannon Deth Sentence" and the hauntingly good "Black Fire Upon Us"...followed by the other tracks and really showing no weakness with a few slower songs towards the end....but all in all this a far more technical and musicall diverse album than the 1st Dethalbum as memorable as it was....Dethklok has evolved from funny cartoon metal band to a serious real life metal band on this album....Dethalbum II has more of everything the first had minus the humor...the songs are more complex, harder hitting and have way more personality....sure some can't get past Nathan's new approach but personally this fan loves it and I think most fans will...IT STILL SOUNDS LIKE DETHKLOK JUST WITH MORE PERSONALITY AND FAR MORE BRUTALITY...a 5 star album hands down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dethklok in Transition, October 8, 2009
By
This review is from: Dethalbum II Deluxe Version (CD + DVD) (Audio CD)
With the first Dethalbum, Smalls (as the force behind the 'virtual' band) broke new ground in metal, bringing metal to audiences that had never had reason to explore or accept it previously. With the Dethalbum II, the band - no longer so virtual given their tours, signings, and generally incredible success - has begun to bring those audiences into regions occupied by 'true' metal bands. Songs like Murmaider II, Bloodlines, and The Gears make this album an A Shelf recording for any fan of the series, and worth serious consideration for metal aficionados regardless of their personal television preferences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dethklok Goes Legit, October 7, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dethalbum II Deluxe Version (CD + DVD) (Audio CD)
Dethalbum II is very interesting. Judging by lyrics and music, Dethklok is moving towards a more legitimate death metal sound than the first. It seems Brendon Small never expected the first Dethalbum to be as popular as it got, and this time around he decided to go towards a more traditional feel. While it does take away from the comedy of the first album, this one adds a lot. Brendon has truly found his voice as a death metal vocalist, not just Nathan Explosion. The guitar riffs are more advanced this time around, and the drums... just wow. If you're only looking for direct songs from Metalocalypse you may be disappointed. If you want to hear the band behind the show or are a death metal fan you will be pleasantly surprised by the quality of this album (which I would classify as one of the best death metal albums of 2009).

And, while it does not include any bonus tracks, the Deluxe Edition does include previously unseen footage of the animated Dethklok from Metalocalypse in music video form. Well worth the extra two dollars.
