Book Description

A ragged band of vampires are cutting a bloody path of destruction from Alaska to Washington State! As frost turns the leaves gold and paints the high mountain treetops silver, hundreds of hunters arrive in Swan Valley for their annual deer hunt. What they don't know is an outcast band of vampires have arrived, as well. Raphael Goldhawk, king of the high vampire council, has decreed the taking of human life unlawful. Raul Stannard, an ancient enemy of the half-human king, is determined to overthrow the council, even if it means the exposure and eventual annihilation of the vampire race. Four people, a Ferry County forest ranger (Roger Atley), an Indian spirit-walker (Harley Truefeather), and a young married couple (Brian and Holly Jensen), are about to be caught up in an ancient power struggle, and in a love affair as old as time itself. This novel combines ancient history with modern times, in an epic show-down between good and evil, love and hate. Grab your camping gear and hold on tight! It's time for DETOUR TO DUSK!

THE HUNT is expertly written, filled with beautifully descriptive passages. It now lives in my mind. I know these people. They are not just characters on a page; they are fleshed out, real just like you and me. It is not the usual 'vampire' story. Linell Jeppsen has given us a story of new friends, people you would like to know. (And some that you have to hate.) Primarily, you will meet Brian and his wife, Holly, Roger, a forest ranger and his friend Harley who is a spirit walker and of course exquisitely, handsome Raphael, a modern day vampire. As you learn of their lives you find that they will have something in common. I laughed, loved, cheered, hated and cried. Only an expert story teller can surface so much emotion in a reader. I did not want the book to end and I cried for my friends that have gone on without me. I hope Ms. Jeppsen writes another novel about the people in THE HUNT because to me they still live, somewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare for Battle and Intrigue. November 29, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
It has been a long, long time that a book really caught my attention that wasn't related to sports of WWII. This one did it. I started it last night and would have finished it, but one is still required to catch a few winks. When I woke-up, I threw on my clothes, obtained the morning paper, a good cup of decafe and hurried back to crank-up the computer. Not ready for a Kindle yet. Why the rush? I couldn't wait to finish this masterly crafted novel. Not since the "Hunt for Red October" or " A Bridge Too Far," has a book so completely garnered my attention to finish. I knew at the halfway point it would be obtaining the (at times) elusive and honest five star rating. This one is.

The story is developed around two divergent vampire clans. One is of true blood and hates all things human while another camp realizes that in order to survive and carry on their heritage, they most co-exist with the humans despite all our frailties. The group that wishes nothing but death on the human race crosses the council and is ousted for all eternity. They are forced to "live off the land" as some might say.

Enter Brian and Holly Jepson. A young couple looking forward to a much deserved weekend of hunting and relaxing away from the confines and steel/concrete that surrounds their everyday lives in Spokane,Wa. Brian can't wait to join nature and with luck, catch a few elusive trout and maybe bag a nice six point over the vacation while his young wife waits back at camp to properly prepare the fresh meat he hopes to return with.

There is one problem, The Royal Canadian Mounties and the FBI have been tracing an apparent serial killing that started in Anchorage and is rapidly moving south. There are no clues. No traces of attackers, just bloody shredded bodies liter the attack sites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing! Stay out of the woods! October 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ms. Jeppsen weaves a wonderful tale of vampirism with a new take on their position in the heirarchy of the supernatural. She provides an interesting view of the internal conflicts that occur within their society while exploring the varied ways that the vampires view humans. The reader experiences emotions of extreme violence from some of the characters, while feeling the empathy and true compassion from other players. A hint of impending doom is also sprinkled throughout the novel, keeping the reader wanting to know more. The addition of "heavenly characteristics" given to the vampires add a twist to how we view these creatures, and the concept of "family" is also intertwined into the thriller. Ms. Jeppsens writing style is smooth and flowing, keeping the reader involved in the novel. The reader attaches easily to the underdogs, hoping for a comeback victory! But will it be?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! August 1, 2011
Format:Paperback
I could not put this book down. Linell is a wonderful writer, very descriptive and gets you into the book from the first word right till the last page.
I usually don't do the vampire books, (never saw a Twilight movie nor read a Twilight book, and had no desire to) but I wanted to read this one as Linell is a friend of a friend. So I was going to read it just to support her. I didn't expect to like it but I loved it! I wish she had been writing years ago. Can't wait for another book!
I ended up loving the good vampires and feeling like I knew the characters as she presents them so well. Don't miss this read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great way to re-tell the vampire myth! January 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ok, let's face it: I'm an old-fashioned writer who likes his tales traditional, the sort of "the times when men where men, women wore bustles and vampires were vampires"; I like them sucking blood, being vasquished by sunlight and sleeping inside coffins during daytime. I consider any variation from the original mythos an aberration and a complete anathema to my vampire literary tastes. However, considering all this, it comes as no small praise when I say that I loved Linnell Jeppsen's "The Hunt". During the opening chapters she manages to establish vampires as mankind's ages-old predator, less supernatural and more natural that the vampire tales that I'm used to, but besides this, she doesn't depart much from the traditional lore. Kudos for her! The rest of the book? It was the sort of novel that gets me to read very late into the night, completely ignoring that I was pretty much past my bedtime; 11 PM? I just need to finish this page... Midnight? lemme do this chapter and I'll put the book down.... This is the quality of the magic that the author has woven into her tale.
