Jimmy O'Brien, defense attorney to the dregs of the criminal world digs into the past, igniting a powder-keg that threatens to expose long-held secrets buried and forgotten with Roberts' confession. Secrets that could destroy the underground aristocracy that for years has held power in Los Angeles, city of broken dreams. Jimmy's ordeal takes him from the bleakness of Roberts' prison cell to the seedy streets of Hollywood, frantically searching to find out who took this DETOUR TO MURDER.

HOT READ An Engaging Noir By Steven M. Thomas OC Metro Published: November 01, 2010: Newport Beach author Jeff Sherratt brings his cop-turned-lawyer hero Jimmy O Brien back for a third adventure in this noir set in Southern California in the 1970s. Assisted by his P.I. fixer, Sol, and his partner, Rita, O Brien delves into a pair of 1940s murders in order to free a man wrongly imprisoned for 29 years. Jimmy gets involved in the case when he is appointed by the court to represent the imprisoned man at a parole hearing. The proceedings seem at first to be a mere formality, with no chance of a positive outcome for the prisoner. Even though he believes he is guilty of the brutal murders, Jimmy still prepares diligently for the hearing and uncovers a discrepancy in the record that sets him off on a quest to discover the truth. Sherratt does a great job with snappy comedic dialogue and evocative descriptions of the Southland from the gritty streets of Downey, where his office is, to Chino, Los Feliz, Hollywood and the coast north of Santa Barbara. The story involves stolen identity, political corruption and tragic romance, as well as murder. What more can a reader ask? --OC Metro

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow read. July 9, 2011
By Valerie
Format:Kindle Edition
I found it difficult to get into this book. It was slow at the start and though the pace picked up I wasn't dying to find out how it would end. I've read the many positive reviews for this book, so perhaps it's just not the genre for me. I did not find myself rooting for the protagonist, Jimmy, in his search to find the truth about who really murdered the woman back in 1945. One positive is that he story does have some interesting twists to keep the reader guessing.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Series May 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While I have enjoyed the "Jimmy O'Brien series," I have some criticism of the editing. An English major NEVER accepts mixed tenses in a phrase(it either WAS or it IS, but not both), misplaced and/or extra words (the she asked...), name changes, etc.
Furthermore, IF Mr. Sherratt is going to continue to refer to the seveth caVALRY, he needs to get it right!!!
There was only ONE CaLVARY - and it is vastly different from his references to the imaginary "seventh" in both "Guilty Or Else" and "Detour to Murder"!!!
If one is able to overlook glaring errors, one could enjoy his books...the characters are strong and he combines excitement, humor, hurt and pathos to weave a good story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a typical Mystery July 11, 2011
By Mirna
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a complimentary copy of this book.
I was very excited to start reading after reading a short review. Much to my delight the book was what I expected.

The writer managed to create the 70's feel by his writing style. I relived events from that time and could picture
the caracters perfectly.
I however did not enjoy the use of God's name in some dialogue's.

The story is about an attorney who is asked to tend to an upcoming parole hearing of an inmate who was charged with murder almost 30 years ago. As he flips through the file before the hearing, he notices alot of inaccuracy regarding the investigation at the time.
Seeing as he is not as busy as he would like to be, he decides to do more digging and comes across shocking revelations. Cash is tight and his firm is barely holding it together.
Although he is treatened and bullied, something stirs him to get to the bottom of the events 29 years ago.

The story is intriguing and never runs out the way I would imagine which is refreshing. I can recommend anyone to pick up a copy. I would be interested in reading more of the writers work to see if the writing trend is the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book July 3, 2011
By D. Waid
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this book to reveiw. It was a great story. Very suspensful, read like watching a 1970 movie with flashbacks to the 40's. I could have done without the very vivid rat scene, as I was reading at bedtime. LOL But it was like I was there and wished I could help the hero out of that jam...you won't beleive all the twists and turns the book has! It will keep you guessing up to the end! A must read for Mystery buffs and classic film lovers too. Get your hands on this story and you won't be able to put it down!

4.0 out of 5 stars worth the time July 1, 2011
By Geo
Format:Kindle Edition
I almost gave up after the first few chapters because I felt like I was reading an old Sam Spade story but I am so glad I didn't quit. The story got so much better that I not only wanted to know who done it but also why. The writing started to draw you in and I started to like the characters, There were enough twists and turns to make it interesting but also a conclusion that wrapped up all the questions and gave a good ending. If you like a who done it that is a who done it you will enjoy this book

3.0 out of 5 stars Patience is rewarded July 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it. I am a fan of this genre and I have to admit, I almost put it down. The beginning of the story is very formulated. To read further, normally some connection with the characters is required and nothing really stood out. The plot is adequately written, but there was no excitement or a reason to really like one of the characters. By the time I reached what should have been the end, i was not enamored. Then the author starts pulling in the past history and the whole story picks up. It took me 3 days to read the first half and 2 hours to read the rest. It was definitely worth the effort!
