3.0 out of 5 stars Maybe good for doctors, not me
This book offers a convincing argument that oral chelation is quite effective. It may not be for the INDIVIDUAL who wants to detox with oral chelation, as it doesn't provide specific instructions/steps to do so. It gives lots of info on lots of minerals or elements which perhaps would be helpful for doctors in conjunction with other teaching materials, but it left me...

5.0 out of 5 stars What's Oral Chelation? And more!, May 17, 2009

This review is from: Detox with Oral Chelation: Protecting Yourself from Lead, Mercury, & Other Environmental Toxins (Paperback)
When I first picked up this book I didn't know anything about chelation therapy ... in general, or as a method of detox. That quickly changed, however, as the book helped me understand not only what chelation is, but how it works and why detoxification is such a vital part of healthy living in our world today. The authors make a great team. David Jay Brown breaks the topics down using easy language and examples for the layman to understand yet carries them out with enough scientific detail to keep the more science-minded readers engaged. His style is friendly and fun, and David is certainly not afraid to bring up topics that may go against the norm. He is not pushy with his knowledge, but does like to plant little seeds that will get the reader thinking. Garry Gordon packs in a wealth of experience, research, and the "MD" that adds to the book's credibility in western medical.

The book quickly goes into why detoxification is so important. It brings awareness to just how polluted our environment is (it is scary how many things I was not even aware of!), how to avoid the ones that we can, and how chelation therapy works. The great thing about oral chelation therapy is that it is available to the masses and not just those with great health coverage. The book goes into how one can make better health choices on a daily basis and how to add in a program of at-home oral chelation therapy. It discusses using EDTA and other chelating agents, including natural ones found at a super-market, their different specificities, synergistic use, and safety concerns.

The book discusses at great length the hazards heavy metals presents on the body- their correlation with Alzheimer's, autism, lack of energy, aging, mental acuity, strokes, cardiovascular health, and many others- and how chelation therapy can help to counteract these hazards.

The book is filled with interesting tidbits (I particularly liked the story about the researchers of Biosphere 2 and a theory of microorganisms causing long term diseases), a section on anti-aging, and a section on smart drugs. Every time I read a paragraph I would think "well, what about this?" and, inevitably, the next paragraph would address my question exactly. Included in the book is a hardy appendix that carries interviews with experts in related fields, Dr. Gary Gordon's Oral Detoxification Program, and a glossary. Even after reading the book cover-to-cover, one can continue to learn more from the books, papers, and online resources the book refers the reader to to learn more about specific topics.

For one who's interested in cleansing one's body of toxic contaminants--and according to facts brought up in this book that should be everybody--this is a must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but unorganized & redundant, September 12, 2009
By
JCL (St. Petersburg, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Detox with Oral Chelation: Protecting Yourself from Lead, Mercury, & Other Environmental Toxins (Paperback)
This book has good information but was repetitive and gave me the impression it was rushed to press.

The book gives you a clear understanding of why the author believes chelation is needed, but doesn't take the next step, such as if you wanted to test yourself for heavy metals what type of test is better; blood or hair, what are the costs?

The book is 235 pages long and chapter 6 ends at page 136. Page 137 is Appendix A and is a Q&A interview from one author to the other, then App B, then C & D. While there is some fresh data in these, it is sandwiched in between 100 pages of things that have been mentioned 3, 4,or 5 times.

The Index doesn't list mercury or (thimerisol), although chapter 6 is about mercury. Nothing in Index for heavy metals, lead (chapter 2), or even EDTA (which is mentioned throughout the book).

I read this b/c I was interested in two metals. But it was difficult to extract information on them because of the format of the book and skimpy Index. This book should be edited, and it would reduce the pages by 30% and improve its readability.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elevate Your Health To The Best It Can Be By Removing The Heavy Metals (no, not AC/DC and KISS!), May 22, 2009
This review is from: Detox with Oral Chelation: Protecting Yourself from Lead, Mercury, & Other Environmental Toxins (Paperback)
If you're walking around breathing in air and eating food, then the odds are you have heavy metal poisoning. No, not from all those years of listening to old AC/DC and KISS records, but from toxins brought on by lead, mercury, and a handful of other substances that have worked their way into your body unbeknownst to you. The health complications from these metals are numerous: heart disease, cancer, hypertension, mental illness, hyperlipidemia, accelerated aging, fibromyalgia, and more than you could even imagine.

So what do you do to remove these harmful substances from your body? It's called chelation therapy and it is a rather controversial yet highly-effective means for extracting these toxins out to improve those health problems associated with the heavy metals. The best part is oral chelation therapy is inexpensive and results begin happening after just a few treatments.

Find out all the details about how chelation is the perfect companion to livin' la vida low-carb (even Dr. Atkins wrote about it in his book Atkins Health Revolution) and will elevate your health to the best it can be!

The website offers products for sale, but doesn't give guidance on which products to choose for general detox. Maybe I'm missing something . . .

1.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Book, October 31, 2011
This review is from: Detox with Oral Chelation: Protecting Yourself from Lead, Mercury, & Other Environmental Toxins (Paperback)
I was expecting this book would cover all the substances for pulling heavy metals out of the body that are within my reach. It only covers EDTA and the title - Detox with Oral Chelation - means the cheaper, do it yourself at home version of EDTA, rather than the expensive, go to a hospital and some medical person puts a big needle in your arm version.

Alternatives:
There is a section on other chelating agents, but it's thin and weak. There is little in this book that is outside the for profit dogma of America medicine and, alas, nothing that is creative or cutting edge. David did mention garlic, but not cilantro or chlorella.

Heart Disease:
The book says heart disease might be caused by a virus or bacteria. That's a very old theory. It is possible that an infection can damage the heart. I've heard rheumatic fever can damage heart valves, but that certainly wouldn't account for the dramatic rise in heart disease. (Cholesterol also does not explain heart disease. Having a low cholesterol level is actually a risk factor for having a heart attack. People with high, moderate and low cholesterol levels have all had heart attacks. There's a form of LDL called Pattern B that is the greatest risk factor for heart disease, as far as diet goes. So, stop worrying about your cholesterol level.)

Autism:
David wrote that autism may be caused by mirror neurons that become defective. In all the videos I've watched and articles I've read about autism, no one mentioned mirror neurons.

Not In The Book:
Doctor Natasha Campbell-McBride is a specialist in autism. She invented the GAPS diet, which stands for Gut and Psychology Syndrome. She said she's always able to at least see noticeable improvement with autistic children.

There's a huge controversy about vaccines. She said vaccines don't cause autism, but a vaccine with mercury, also called thimerosol, is often the final insult that pushes a child over the edge into autism.

There's Doctor Dietrich Klinghardt, a German doctor. He was physician of the year in 2007. In his two hour video, he said autism is either caused by heavy metal poisoning or lyme disease. His favorite chelators are chlorella and cilantro. His videos are full of information on heavy metals, but it takes patience to follow since English is his second language or he's speaking in German with English subtitles.

Doctor Yoshiaki Omura discovered that cilantro will pull heavy metals out of a person's body. Cilantro will even pull mercury out of a person's brain! The researchers don't know how cilantro does this, but it does. Many of the articles I've read said that cilantro works better with chlorella. Once the heavy metals get to the large intestine, they might be reabsorbed into the body if there are a lot of heavy metals. Chlorella will keep the heavy metals moving out of the body.

Arsenic is found in:
Cigarette smoke, laundry detergents, colored chalk, wallpaper, wine and tap water.

Aluminum is found in:
Anti-perspirants, aluminum pots, pans and foil, antacids, baby formula, tap water, baking powder, feminine hygiene products, some types of plastics, soy milk and cow milk. It can cause Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease.

Lead is found in:
Cosmetics, some types of plastics, batteries, insecticides, pottery glaze, soldered pipes and old paint.

Mercury is found in:
Mercury amalgam fillings, fish and other seafood, adhesive, cosmetics, fabric softeners, pesticides, paint, plastics, fungicides, floor waxes and polishes, laxatives, suppositories, tattoo dye, hair dye, batteries and, no surprise here, mercury thermometers.

The point being, heavy metals are found in many substances, not just fillings and fish. This is a huge, largely invisible health crisis. I suggest you start reading and watching videos about heavy metals and detoxing, but don't start with this book. There is just not enough information about heavy metals here.

I think this is an excellent book. I've read about half so far.
Dr. Gordon is one of the smartest, most experienced in this important field.
I've been doing Oral EDTA for a few months with no problems- and starting to
feel much better. -Top notch book.

3.0 out of 5 stars oral chelation, July 14, 2011

This review is from: Detox with Oral Chelation: Protecting Yourself from Lead, Mercury, & Other Environmental Toxins (Paperback)
Good introductory to oral chelation. It does need to go into more detail with the regiment one should take. Also, it's a little tedious to read with all the research studies they involve. It seems that there's no clear cut answer if this regiment works or not. I did start taking the synthetic amino acid and have felt better, more energetic, and it seems to suppress my appetite.

This is a well-researched, informative book, but it is geared more to the
medical profession than the 'amateur' DIY 'doctor.'
Difficult to understand in many places.
