4.0 out of 5 stars Another Tight LP
Now there is two....What's the deal with the Slum Village lineup on each LP? Anyway, without Baatin, this LP is still a winner. Standout tracks to me is the one that the kat from KC on the last review said, "Do You" (produced by J.Dilla-the best producer the masses may not know of), "Dirty" with ODB aka Dirt McGirt-doing the hook...good track, Selfish...

Now there is two....What's the deal with the Slum Village lineup on each LP? Anyway, without Baatin, this LP is still a winner. Standout tracks to me is the one that the kat from KC on the last review said, "Do You" (produced by J.Dilla-the best producer the masses may not know of), "Dirty" with ODB aka Dirt McGirt-doing the hook...good track, Selfish w/Kayne West and John Legend, "The Hours", The Reunion w/ J Dilla, HOT! and there are other joints on there featuring Dwele too! This is a solid LP. T3 sounds much better on this release, you can hear what he is saying, without him slurring like on the last LP, and Elzhi............that kat can SPIT!!!!!! Point blank. He's nice...the beats are tight too. The majority of the production are from Young RJ and BR Gunna. They did a solid job. Get this LP...it's worth it. I read a statment on their website weeks before the LP dropped that Baatin was on LP anyway, but he is not!! Maybe the label changed their mind. Oh well. The trinity is now down to two but thank goodness their sound hasn't dropped too.

5.0 out of 5 stars HipHopClassic!, July 18, 2004

What can i say, this album is a classic from track 1 to the last track on the Cd. The beats are sick. Only difference between this and FAntastic Voyage 2 is that Voyage had more tracks on it. When detroit deli ends it leaves u feening for more. ALBUM OF THE YEAR and that includes lloydbanks and kayne west's album's which are both bangin too. PICK DETROIT DELI as fast as u can, press play , sit back and just listen to the ill-ness, peace.

Well, what can I say about SV. Each album they drop has a different feel to it. With "Fantastic Vol. 2", there were the originals--J-Dilla, Baatin, and T3--and they were still on the underground hip hop tip , with the base-and-sample Jay Dee vibe, which I really miss. "Trinity"--Baatin, T3, and newbie Elzhi-- was on some completely different sh--; it sounded like they were just experimenting with various sounds and beatmaking machines and, basically, like they were zapping the sh-- out of each other with lasers and playin' with lightsabers. "Detroit Deli" is different from the previous two releases but still reflects the SV vibe, though the group has been transformed repeatedly. It's the prototype of what Detroit rap SHOULD sound like. They should diversify their subject matter more but, overall, the album's phat. I love SV, but they need to decide what they're gonna do about membership. Baatin, turban and all, should still be with Elzhi and T3, J-Dilla should do more production and guest spots with them. I'm not gonna reccommend tracks; listen to the samples...or better yet, cop the album, along with Jada and Ghostface, while you're online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Typical SV...., October 21, 2004

This review is from: Detroit Deli: A Taste of Detroit (Audio CD)
This is a very good album. It is typical Slum Village ( even w/ out J - Dilla covering ALL the production ). The album has great production, and skirt-chasing, playboy Slum Village lyrics. No need to point out any favs, the album in its entirety is overall good, and well thought out. Cop this !!

Peace

VERY ENJOYABLE. ONE OF THE BETTER OF THE YEAR. DETROIT DELI IS GETTIN MAD ROTATION IN THE CD PLAYER, AT LEAST UNTIL THE NEW ROOTS ALBUM DROPS. ELZHI IS THE BEST NEW CAT IN THE GAME. BELIEVE THAT.

I've been waiting for this album for a bit now after being slightly disappointed with Trinity. I guess I was hoping for another Fantastic Volume 2 when I heard Trinity. That being said I wasn't expecting anything great this album, good but not great. I was surprised though these new producers BR Gunna sometimes remind me of Jay Dee. This album has highs and lows but it is definitely better than Trinity. The lyrics keep on improving and the beats are solid. I'm disappointed Baatin is not with the group anymore but hopefully there will be a "reunion" of the fab four. The Jay Dee produced "Do You", "Dirty" with Dirt McGirt, "Selfish" with Kanye, "Things We Do", "Count the Ways" with Dwele, and "Reunion" with Jay Dee are the high points in the album. Overall pretty good effort by the duo.

5.0 out of 5 stars ess villa is back!, June 29, 2004
This review is from: Detroit Deli: A Taste of Detroit (Audio CD)
slum village is back, albeit without baatin, but t3 and elzhi do their part, and it shows. for those who are familiar with slum, you'll find that detroit deli seems to follow in the same line that trinity did. however, the production is solid by the newcomers (young rj, br, milk) and of course j dilla comes thru once again with the beats and a great verse to bring hope back for the reunion, ironically on the song "reunion". favorite songs include the first 3 and the last 3...especially "things we do"...think "things you do" from the past!

5.0 out of 5 stars SV is my new favorite group!, June 29, 2004

I really like these guys. Their style is a mixture of underground hip-hop, commercial music, and soul music. Everything about it is just good. My favorite songs are "Selfish", "Do You", and "Ole Girl". Now I want to go to Detroit and find out what its all about - it must be something going on, the Detroit Pistons are the World NBA Champs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice selection on this DELI's meny., February 23, 2005
This review is from: Detroit Deli: A Taste of Detroit (Audio CD)
Its like hiphop's answer to blackstreet with these cats, the way they lose a member everytime they release an album. With the addition of ELZHI on the last album, at least lyrically, they're are better group. However musically there's something missing. Im not sure if it was the exit of super-producer J-DILLA cuz on "trinity" the music wasnt really an issue. This time they've come on a more mellow vibe that doesnt always come off. "Count the ways", "keep holding on" and "closer" are all borderline r+b and not that dirty soul funk you come to expect from the vill'. However there's enough here to bring it up+tantalise the tastebuds. Worth copping, not that bad. If J-DILLA does return then the next album will be pure heat!!!
