gerald wilson's detroit is the stuff of legends- a super talented line up of musicians and beautifully written music, with the recording serving up the great exchanges that occur between the two. this is what it sounds like when you love what you do. the best of 2009 for sure!

Being a long time fan/collector (Pacific Jazz recording label) of Greald Wilson's recordings this "DETROIT" is just another of his master pieces. Thank you.

More Wonderful Music From The Great Mr. Gerald Wilson!!,
By TC "Tom" (Connecticut) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Detroit (Audio CD)
This CD pays homage to Mr. Wilson's hometown of 1934-1939. The "Detroit Suite" (the first 6 tunes) was commissioned by the Detroit International Jazz Festival in 2009. It proves that Mr. Wilson still has the great musical imagination and arranging skills that has made him one of the top jazz orchestral leaders (at over 90 years of age!)for such a long time. In reference to a former review asking why "Cass Tech" sounds like Benny Golson's "Along Comes Betty", please note that the sub-title of the song is "Variations on a Theme by B.G." (i.e. Benny Golson)- thus honoring Mr. Golson. If you like jazz, especially big band, you cannot go wrong with Gerald Wilson.

Not bad,

Can someone please tell my why the track "Cass Tech" sounds like a rip off of "Along Came Betty" by Art Blakey? Listen for yourself. The melody is suspiciously similar.

Mr. Wilson is from my hometown of Detroit. I just recently heard of him this summer. Some of the selections from this cd, were being pre-released over the air. "Detroit", "Cass Tech" and "Miss Gretchen" are my favorites.
