4.0 out of 5 stars very good soundtrack
The DETROIT ROCK CITY soundtrack features mostly good stuff. 3 KISS tracks, a cover of KISS's Strutter, some original recordings from the original artists of the 70's, and some covers of 70's songs. The new KISS track is great. Everclear's cover of Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town" sounds very good too as well as Pantera's cover of Ted Nugent's Cat...

I give this soundtrack 2 stars because it still has some great songs on it. However, whoever compiled it did two things wrong: 1) The left off so many other great songs from the movie, and 2) They have covers of these classic songs instead of the originals? For shame. Well, and also because they have Marilyn Manson doing ANYTHING at all. Someone who sucks as bad as him should not even be allowed in the same room as ACDC, much less allowed to cover their song. Anyway, if you ask me, the soundtrack should read as follows:

"Love Gun" by KISS
"Funk #49" by the James Gang
"Lights Out" by UFO
"Little Willy" by Sweet
"School Days" by the Runaways
"Jailbreak" by Thin Lizzy
"Shout It Out Loud" by KISS
"Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter Group
"The Boys Are Back In Town" by Thin Lizzy
"Rock & Roll All Nite" by KISS
"Iron Man" by Black Sabbath
"Problem Child" by ACDC
"Surrender" by Cheap Trick
"I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones
"Highway to Hell" by ACDC
"Godzilla" by Blue Oyster Cult
"Fox On the Run" by Sweet
"Strutter" by KISS
"Blitzkrieg Bop" by the Ramones
"Calling Dr. Love" by KISS
"Come Sail Away" by Styx
"Whole Lotta Rosie" by ACDC
"Love Hurts" by Nazareth
"Running With the Devil" by Van Halen
"Detroit Rock City" by KISS

Write this list down and download the songs this way. It's so so so much better. The actual soundtrack that plays during the movie, I give 5 stars.

The DETROIT ROCK CITY soundtrack features mostly good stuff. 3 KISS tracks, a cover of KISS's Strutter, some original recordings from the original artists of the 70's, and some covers of 70's songs. The new KISS track is great. Everclear's cover of Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town" sounds very good too as well as Pantera's cover of Ted Nugent's Cat Scratch Fever. Other highlights include the original recordings of Running with the Devil from Van Halen, Iron Man from Black Sabbath, Jailbreak from Thin Lizzy, a live version of Surrender from Cheap Trick as well as others. For me, the worst downside was Marilyn Manson's horrible cover of AC DC's Highway to Hell. The song should have been left alone and AC DC's version should have been on the record. Manson turns it very techno and it is hardly recognizable to people who like the original version. Aside from that, there are a few other imperfections although not as great as the Manson song. The KISS cover sounds a little weird. The music on it is good and anybody who knows Strutter will recognize it right away. But the vocals sound strange. Songs like Little Willy and School Days don't fit in that great either but it could just be my opinion. But all in all, it is a good CD, especially for a soundtrack.

I agree with the other reviewers who note that the soundtrack was missing most of the great songs from the movie. Reviewer J. Darwin listed a very impressive soundtrack listing which captures nearly all of the great rock songs from the film. I took on the challenge of capturing virtually all of the songs played during the movie, in the order that they appear. This includes background song clips on the radio, that were confirmed in the closing credits. Here goes:

I Stole Your Love -- KISS
Rock & Roll All Night -- MYSTERY
Love Gun -- KISS
Cat Scratch Fever -- TED NUGENT
20th Century Boy -- T-REX
Funk No. 49 -- JAMES GANG
Conjunction Junction -- BOB DOROUGH
Ladies Room -- KISS
Lights Out -- UFO
Little Willy -- SWEET
School Days -- THE RUNAWAYS
Jailbreak -- THIN LIZZY
Shout It Out Loud -- KISS
Frankenstein -- THE EDGAR WINTER GROUP
Makin' It -- DAVID NAUGHTON
Wild and Hot -- ANGEL
The Boys Are Back In Town -- THIN LIZZY
Radar Love -- GOLDEN EARRING
Iron Man -- BLACK SABBATH
Problem Child -- AC/DC
Christine Sixteen -- KISS
Turn To Stone -- ELO
Surrender -- CHEAP TRICK
I Wanna Be Sedated -- THE RAMONES
Escape (The Pina Colada Song) -- RUPERT HOLMES
Highway To Hell -- AC/DC
Black Magic Woman -- SANTANA
Every 1's a Winner -- HOT CHOCOLATE
Rebel Rebel -- DAVID BOWIE
Convoy -- WC McCALL
Shock Me -- KISS
Godzilla -- BLUE OYSTER CULT
Fox On the Run -- SWEET
Boogie Shoes -- KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND
Strutter -- KISS
Blitzkreig Bop -- THE RAMONES
Popcorn -- HOT BUTTER
Beth -- KISS
Fire -- OHIO PLAYERS
Muskrat Love -- CAPTAIN & TENNILLE
Calling Dr. Love -- KISS
Come Sail Away -- STYX
Rock Your Baby -- GEORGE McCRAE
Whole Lotta Rosie -- AC/DC
Love Hurts -- NAZARETH
Runnin' With the Devil -- VAN HALEN
Love To Love -- UFO
Detroit Rock City (Live) -- KISS
The Boys Are Back In Town -- EVERCLEAR
Highway To Hell -- MARILYN MANSON
Nothing Can Keep Me From You -- KISS

There you have it. 51 songs. "Love Gun" by Kiss appears a second time in the movie just before the 8-Track tape gets creamed on the Interstate. There is a song playing in the Radio Station elevator as the guys go to pick up their tickets that I can't make out, so that is missing. I also replaced Mystery with Kiss on "Rock & Roll All Night". My 3-CD set of the true soundtrack is complete. Great movie. If you're up to the challenge, make that true soundtrack!! Rock on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awsome, but could be better, April 10, 2000

This CD, in its whole is a bunch of 70's rock covers. However, most of them are pretty good. Pantera did a superb job with the 'Nuge's Cat Scratch Fever, Everclear, running away with one of the best song on this CD. However, Manson screwed it all up with the horrible job of AC/DC's Highway to Hell, which is the album's only sour note. But, the orginal hits are still on here. The best being Van Halen's Runnin With The Devil. KISS also chipped in a good new song. However, it was too mellow to satisfy me. But, that is just my opinion. However, if you want a good rock CD, then this one is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best soundtrack I have ever heard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, August 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Detroit Rock City: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
This is an amazing cd. A few songs are not up to par with the others they are still good though. Everclear starts it off hard with their rendition of the boys are back in town and KISS follows with shout it out loud then enter Van Halen with their classic runnin' with the devil only to be upstaged by Pantera's rippin' rendition of Ted Nudgent's classic cat scratch fever and Black Sabbath keeps up the rockin' with their all time coolest song iron man. Then enter Marilyn Manson with his interesting cover of the AC/DC classic highway to hell. Then the album takes a dive with the not so good DRAIN sth cover of 20th century boy but then KISS makes up for it with the title track detroit rock city. Thin Lizzy then comes up to bat with jailbreak (which is an enjoyable tune) followed by A live version of Cheap Trick doing surrender. David Bowie comes up with rebel rebel (one of my favorites I might add) followed by The Donnas doing a rockin' cover of KISS's strutter. The Runaways follow up with school days and then Sweet does the catchy classic little willy. And closing it all up is KISS with the new single nothing can keep me from you which, while very un-KISS like, is pretty good in my opinion. The only thing I don't like is they chose not to put the KISS classic rock and roll all night on it, yet despite that it is the best soundtrack I have ever heard, and I've heard a lot. I strongly suggest you buy this soundtrack.

5.0 out of 5 stars great cd, but many songs not included, January 31, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Detroit Rock City: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
Hey, this cd had an awsome collection of classic rock tunes (aside from the covers by manson, pantera, and everclear). The only thing that bothered me was the fact that there was many great songs in he movie which were not included in the soundtrack. With that said, I was wondering the name of one song in specific, is played when Trip tries to take the kiss ticket from the little kid on the pinball machine and his older brother (chungo) is walking down the isle of the store to punch him,it is a great song but I dont know the name or the artist, someone PLEASE e-mail me or post the name/artist. thanks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crappy movie, great soundtrack, March 17, 2008
This review is from: Detroit Rock City: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
So Detroit Rock City was a bomb and deserved to be with its fart jokes, pimply-faced, skinny guy stripping scenes and all. But the soundtrack actually has a few highlights.
Everclear's opening track is probably my favorite cover of all time, I can't even listen to Thin Lizzy's "Boys Are Back In Town" anymore without being reminded how much better Everclear did it. But Thin Lizzy's classic "Breakout" never sounded better.
"Cat Scratch Fever" by Pantera is very faithful to the original, but the growl in Phil Anselmo's voice gives it a great edge.
The Donna's version of "Strutter" is upbeat and fun, but not great.
The other two cover's by Marilyn Manson and Drain STH are slow and dull.
I almost wish this album was all covers, because the other tracks you pretty much hear on classic rock radio everyday anyway.
But I say pick up a cheap used copy, if for nothing else than Everclear's stellar contribution-think of it as a single, why not pay 5 bucks for a single and rock on!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good collection, whether your a KISS fan or not, October 3, 2002
This review is from: Detroit Rock City: Music From The Motion Picture (Audio CD)
I'll start off by saying that I'm not a KISS fan at all, and I stand by that statement. However, I thought the movie, Detroit Rock City, was a great, hilarious film that anyone could enjoy whether they were a KISS fan or not. The same pretty much goes for this soundtrack which is more of a compilation disc of hard rock/metal from the film's era, but what sets it above being a compilation is the featured cover songs. Pantera's version of Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever" is a blistering balls to the wall cover that excels above all the other covers on here. Everclear's version of Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back in Town" isn't all that different from the original version but still rocks. Drain S.T.H.'s version of "20th Century Boy" is pretty good, but what disappoints me the most is Marilyn Manson's cover of AC/DC's "Highway to Hell". Nobody does cover songs better than Manson, and his industrial/goth themed take on the song isn't good at all, and the song just ends up dragging along. Other than that we get some of the popular singles from Van Halen, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Thin Lizzy, and Cheap Trick among others, plus there are two "classic" KISS songs and a closing new track from KISS to round this soundtrack out. All in all, whether your a KISS fan or not, you'll find something to like about this collection.
