This documentary about the current situation in Detroit, MI was both enchanting and sad at the same time. Kudos to host Anthony Bourdain and his spectacular crew, especially the talented local photographers/filmmakers who captured both the former beauty and the gut-wrenching decay of this once fabulous city. The spirit and heart of the locals trying to make the best of a dismal situation is to be commended and it is a eye-opening to think this could be any city in our country and it is heart-breaking to watch the survivors in this city work so hard to keep hope alive while buildings and such are literally crumbling down around them. It is a must-see for anyone who truly cares about where their roots are!

This is an excellent insight from an outsider's eyes about what is going on in the city of Detroit. There are some things that he is skeptical about, as far as someone having a small, roadside food stand and another having a fine dining spot, but what everyone needs to understand is that these people are definitely, INDEED, helping the city of Detroit by simply just staying in Detroit.

Anthony immediately cuts through all the BS and tells it like it is. Either you are a fan 100% within minutes of listening to him, or you just don't "get it". I wish he had more shows, i've seen them all... top notch stuff...

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. There is a lot for people to learn about recent history and why America is in the economic shambles it is in today. The factories are closed, people are out of work, we are not producing and this has trickled down to every state in the Union! Mr. Bourdain takes us through the city and also displays the local foods and some traditions. Additionally, through the magic of video I was introduced to someone I hadn't heard of before, Charlie LeDuff. I went on to read his book Detroit, An American Autopsy, but I will leave that for another review. I hope there is a part two to this episode. There is MORE FOOD and MORE HISTORY that I want to see.

I spent many summer vacations waiting for No Reservations to play reruns on Travel channel. I still watch those, but sometimes it feels like he's been everywhere. Parts Unknown is not for the faint of heart. Bourdain seems to deliberately put himself in the sticky situations or places. There is an air of literary or immersive journalism, not just what cool dish do they serve here?
It is a really amazing show - I use it in my classes so many times, I cannot tell you.

I thought this episode was a not a great as some of his other episodes. Not because it wasn't at an exotic place, it was not very capturing of New Mexico. There wasn't anything about Toas, Angel Hair, and some of the other smaller towns in New Mexico. Anthony didn't touch on any of the events that Santa Fe has to offer throughout the year. One could not feel the essence of what New Mexico has to offer. If the episode says New Mexico I would think he would want to show off all parts not just Santa Fe and Albuquerque.
