5.0 out of 5 stars A great intro to the product line, August 25, 2008
By
This review is from: Deva Curl Travel Kit, (4) 3oz. Bottles + Travel Bag, Low Shipping, Devacurl (Health and Beauty)
This kit has four nice-sized bottles of the basic Deva Curl products, 3 ounces is a good amount to try out with, much bigger than some travel/trial sizes I've paid more for from other salon brands. Since I ordered online and have never tried these products, it was nice to start small.

I'm the kind of person that won't use a product even if it's a miracle in a bottle if I don't like the fragrance. Each of the items in this travel pack has a different scent, but none are overbearingly strong or too oddly scented. Here's what I thought of each:

No-poo- Smells nice, sort of just plain and lotiony doesn't smell like flowers or fruit or perfume. Works good to lift away product build-up and break the surface tension so conditioner works in better.

One Condition- Also a fairly neutral smell, not fruity or perfumed. I thought it worked into my hair easily, eased the tangles out and left it soft and feeling conditioned.

Angell- Not my favorite. Smells very fruity and I think my curls were softer, smoother and less separated before I used this product than after.

Set It Free- Odd scent, like candy or anyway very, very sweet smelling. I don't like it combined with the Angell, it feels sticky. Not as sticky as products that use silicone, but sticky to the point where I don't want to touch my hair without washing my hands after, and that's not very pleasant.

I've got very curly hair and the Deva Curl way of treating curly hair is a change that takes some learning to accept. Check out "Curly Girl" by Lorraine Massey, the creator of these products for a big pep talk on loving and caring for your curls. I'm glad she's come out with this product line because before it came along it was harder to care for curls, even if I'm not in love with every single product.

5.0 out of 5 stars African American loves Deva Curl, October 12, 2008
This review is from: Deva Curl Travel Kit, (4) 3oz. Bottles + Travel Bag, Low Shipping, Devacurl (Health and Beauty)
I have had trouble with my curly hair all my life. I have tried hundreds of products and I have mixed products like a chemist. I started with the travel kit so I would not waste money on another product that did not live up to the advertising. I am biracial and nothing made my hair look like these products do. I LOVE THESE PRODUCTS!!!!!!!!! You should try them. My hair looks and feels great. I have been wearing my hair natural and I was just about to get a perm and give up when I tried this travel kit. You will not regret giving these products a chance. I did discover I do not need all of the products, but get the kit and play around. You will discover what works for you. Also search for Deva Curl on line and you will find a video that tells you how to care for your hair. You could buy the book that goes with the products, but really the video on line teaches you enough to have fabulous curls!

5.0 out of 5 stars Devacurl trial/travel kit, October 31, 2009

This review is from: Deva Curl Travel Kit, (4) 3oz. Bottles + Travel Bag, Low Shipping, Devacurl (Health and Beauty)
This is an excellent way to try several products in the Devacurl line without having to invest in all of the full-size products! The travel kit is definitely overpriced for the amount of total ounces of product you receive, but on the other hand, it will save you a bunch of money if you decide you wouldn't be interested in all of the full-size products after trying them. Because of this, I only grimaced just a little bit at the cost of the travel kit. As it turns out, I am only planning to buy the Angell in the larger sizes in the future. (Actually, I have already mail-ordered a 32 oz. bottle of Angell for only $27.95!) The No Poo is actually a VERY good creamy conditioner-like shampoo (no suds at all, and looks and spreads just exactly like a conditioner would; it also does a good job of cleaning the scalp and hair); however, my scalp is oily, and the No Poo is made for people with dry scalp and hair to give them extra conditioning while they clean their hair. It was too moisturizing for me and helped weigh my fine hair down a little. It has a pleasant smell, but unfortunately the perfume hangs around FOREVER after you use it, both in your hair and in the shower. The perfume got on my nerves after a while. There are some unhealthy (sensitizing) ingredients in the product, also, as there are in all of the Devacurl products. The One Condition (the conditioner) is an excellent conditioner. I would definitely purchase this in the full size if it weren't for the unhealthy ingredients, for example the parabens and the very strong perfume, in the product. It moisturizes wonderfully, and the One Condition actually smells great, but it is just way too strong-smelling and makes my breathing feel overwhelmed when it's at its strongest. Also, whenever a little got into my eyes in the shower, it irritated my eyes (more proof of the unhealthy ingredients). The Set it Free is right up there with the One Condition in the extremely strong perfume. I find it overpowering. It really doesn't help me out since my hair is not dry. If you had really dry hair, I believe this product would help moisturize your hair. (It has beeswax and olive oil in it, which are both heavy ingredients.) But for my fine hair that is not dry, I felt that it added more product just to help weigh it down, and I had trouble achieving any lift or height on top whenever I used it. Also, I found that putting the Set it Free on after the Angell, which is what you're supposed to do, did not allow the Angell to form the big soft curls. Instead, the curls with the Set it Free were much smaller in size with no fat clumping like you want to see in curl formation. The Angell is the best gel I have used to date. Its scent is actually not as overpowering as all of the other three products, and I thought I would just go ahead and put up with it anyway. It does still contain some unhealthy ingredients, however. But it works great. It really does help the curls to form nice big spirals, and they are very soft later on after you have dried your hair and scrunched the crunch (it is supposed to form a little crunchy "cast" as it dries, but then you're supposed to scrunch your hair, and the crispiness all goes completely away). When you apply it to your hair, it immediately sinks right in and your fingers don't even feel the slightest bit sticky or like you have just put hair gel into your hair. I love this product. Overall, I really like the Devacurl line, but my big complaint that will keep me from buying a lot of their products is that each and every product contains at least one or more ingredients that are not good for your health, and in addition, the extremely strong and pervasive perfume is just simply too much. I read one review from someone who said she couldn't use them because she got an immediate asthma attack on her first usage, and I wasn't surprised. Even though the products smell really pleasant, even kind of scrumptious, the perfume is simply not healthy. If I were to keep on using them, they could over time cause a more severe reaction to me personally, since I already noticed some breathing difficulty and a funny little headache-y feeling just from using them for a trial period. Sure do wish that they would remove the perfumes and take out those problematic ingredients such as menthol, parabens, propylene glycol, etc.! I'll still stick with my health brands for what I can in the meantime.
