Product Description

Package Quantity: 1

As an alternative to fish oil DEVA Omega-3 DHA is appreciated by vegans, vegetarians and anyone who would like to benefit from DHA as derived from algae. DHA is an omega-3, long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid and it is one of the major building blocks of the human brain tissue and retina. DHA is one of the most prominent structural fatty acids in both the brain and the retina. The DHA used in this product is derived from algae grown under sanitary manufacturing conditions. The algae oil used in our product is extracted from the algae without the use of hexane. It is clean, safe and free of ocean borne contaminants. DEVA Omega-3 DHA is 100% vegan, vegetarian and is certified by the Vegan Society, the non-profit organization that actually invented the word "vegan".

Vegans and vegetarians have two barriers to obtaining DHA: It is commonly derived from fish (coldwater fish) and when supplied in easy-to-swallow capsules, is encapsulated in gelatin. Of course, vegans/vegetarians won't consume either.

Then again, even though DHA is converted from ALA (flaxseed sourced) in the body, the conversion is hindered by the processing of non-alpha linoleic acid (LA). So the safest bet is to get DHA directly. If you're vegetarian/vegan and prefer to not consume fish juice and bone jelly (gelatin) then this product is perfect for you.

The DHA is sourced from algae, probably the same algae that provide DHA to fish, and is delivered in v-caps, vegan capsules that don't use animal gelatin. Some doctors consider this a purer form and recommend algal DHA to children and pregnant mothers.

Be aware that there is a light fishy smell so if that bothers you, swallow quickly.

Nice to have a DHA for vegans. I keep the bottle in the freezer and take the capsules in the middle of a meal directly from the freezer. I find that eliminates the fishy burping.

I have been using this product for over two years. It is enteric coated so it helps with the fishy aftertaste. Algae smells like fish so there is a slight fishy smell but no fishy burping after you swallow. I recommend it.

I am 7 months pregnant, and I've been taking Deva Vegan DHA for almost 2 months. While I am not a vegan/vegetarian, I am allergic to many types of fish, and it is best to avoid fish oil-derived Omega-3 supplements during pregnancy anyway due to concerns with heavy metal toxicity from the fish.

While there is no fish oil in these capsules, the algae in them does give them a slight fishy odor. Unpleasant, yes, but I've found it can be greatly reduced by storing the opened bottle in the refrigerator. I tend to take them in the mornings (right after my prenatal vitamin) with milk or juice to help with the slightly fishy aftertaste. Once swallowed, I don't have any problems with "fishy burps". Great product, and I feel confident giving them to my unborn son!

I've been taking this product for about a year... and I like it. Obviously, it's tough to quantify or truly describe any health benefits, and many people don't think this supplement is necessary.

I do, however, so I've chosen this product for my daily dose of DHA.

I've never had any sort of fishy aftertaste, but there are-- to be blunt-- fishy burps. However, I don't think it's quite as bad as others have suggested. You burp a few times afterwards, and you're done. Last time I checked, no burps smelled good. :)

Frankly, I just feel good knowing that I'm getting my DHA in a totally vegan form.

I like that the omega-3 oil isn't derived from fish. The capsules do have a very fishy odor though.

I am eight months pregnant and began taking these when I found out about the baby at five weeks. I am really surprised at all the reviews that state there is a fishy smell and/or taste--I truly have had no problems with this whatsoever! Mine have never smelled funny and I don't have issues with burping or any kind of taste (even with sensitive pregnancy nose and tastebuds!). Also, I have been through two bottles already and none of the capsules have leaked so far.

Overall, I would say this is a great buy if you are a vegan and want to take an Omega 3/DHA supplement. Since it's so hard to find any supplement that fits the bill, it's awesome that this one works so well. Highly recommended!

They DO taste of the sea but I usually take with flavored tea or juice to minimize the taste. Making a face also helps! It's just one quick swallow. Once ingested, I've had no burping or residual algae reminders. We are a vegan household and I am glad to boost my omega 3s with this product. I partly searched for this product because I live in a small community. People here seem to enjoy critiquing our vegan diet for various reasons. They have repeatedly voiced, "but you NEED animal fats!" and "you don't get the RIGHT omega 3s!" Although snarkyness got me to read about Omega 3s and to look for this supplement, I think it truly is a good one.
