WHAT?...,

This review is from: Devastation (CD-ROM)
I have put in about 10 hours playing this game and i have noticed fewer bugs than are in UNREAL 2! It's ridiculous claiming this thing is a 'beta ' test. Maybe that person should test their computer! Moderate system requirements make for great and smooth gameplay with a power system. If you have a 1 ghz or better system with 512 meg of ram and a 64 meg video card, baby you're on your way! This requires much less than that, though. Yes,the game is [similar to] three other games. But, what shooter isn't in some way? The fact is , it makes great use of the purchasing system that was so prevelant in counterstrike, and it has a 'deja vu' feeling when compared to Deus ex. It's every bit as good as RED FACTION 2, if not better. Nice graphics. Yes, the characters are a bit bulky which sometimes seems comical. But, this game is flat out enjoyable. I have come across a couple of clipping problems and one short sequence where the gameplay was choppy for about 45 seconds. But, then all went back to normal. Great game. Forget the naysayers. Some people aren't happy unless they're miserable. ADDED INFO : I have finished this game. It became more enjoyable as i proceeded even further into the sewer and canal systems. The rooftop sequence was very difficult, but no more so than the impossible 'Medal of Honor' sniper sequence. Anyone who's played that knows what i mean. There are more clipping problems throughout the game. They never got in the way of the gameplay. And, there is a serious plot twist about 2/3 of the way through that changes the whole concept of the game and makes it feel 'fresh' just before the concept starts to get old. I still feel the same way, only stronger. THIS GAME IS GREAT! If you're still unsure, wait till it gets below twenty bucks and i guarantee you will not be unhappy! If you're a F.P.S. fan, that is. Please don't disregard this as shovelware, it is so much more than the junk that's thrown at us and soon forgotten. There was true effort put into this and it shows. If we dump this one, we just may be losing out on the next -maybe even better- FPS to come from softtek. I've never heard of them. But, if this is what they have to offer, i'm on board.

Could have been a sleeper hit, but for the bugs. . .,

I have rarely, if ever, played a first-person shooter this bug-ridden, and that's too bad since the actual gameplay, while it's nothing original, is pretty good (even if the plot is seriously lacking). But you can only find so much enjoyment from a game that kicks you to your desktop whenever it feels the urge, or forces you to endure horrendous scenery glitches. What could have been one of the year's sleeper hits in the genre is wounded by its own severe lack of polish, despite all its beautiful graphics, realistic physics, and its awesome assortment of weapons. Out of the box, "Devastation" is devastating, and you, as a gamer, should never have to pay to beta test. Wait for the next genre offering to come along instead - there are plenty looming on the horizon.

I have only played the single player missions for about an hour, but I'm already drawn into the world of Devastation. It is immersive with the physics and graphical elements. Who knew that going through an abandoned building would be so cool, until you could see the fires burning and chemical showers going off throughout the place. What's really amazing is that this all ran on my old ATI Rage 128 pretty nicely. I can't wait to see what it looks like on my ATI Radeon 9700. The only downfall is that the gunfights were a little too easy, so far. When all you have to worry about is strafing and shooting at each easy target, it starts to get boring. I think some more heavy weapons should be added like the Grenade Launcher and RPG7 from SOF2. Those are a little harder to dodge.

Victoria's Militia,

I was a bit wary of buying this game because of the negative reviews. But I had just bought a new computer with a good graphics card, and I had heard that this game "looks good." It was also very cheap. I'm a pretty harsh critic of games in general, and I have a very low tolerance for buggy software. I have not yet played this all the way through, but so far (after several hours of play) I am finding it fun, with pretty good graphics, and I have not encountered any bugs at all. The story is ok if sometimes a bit dopey. In the future, the world is controlled by the evil "Grathius Corporation," sort of a hybrid between Microsoft and Genentech. Naturally, you are the leader of the freedom fighters, a band of rebels that seems to be composed mainly of young heavily armed women wearing miniskirts and lingerie. It's not quite Victoria's Secret with guns but it is close in a couple of places. I think that one secret to success with this game is to get the latest patch. A lot of the earlier reviews mention bugginess and poor AI. With the 390 patch, I have not encountered any bugs, and I would say the AI behavior is acceptable if not spectacular. Your enemies will retreat when they have been hit, use cover, fire down on you from above, etc. They become tougher and more intelligent the farther you go in the game. The reason that I give this game 4 stars instead of 5 is that the gameplay is entirely linear. First you do A, then you do B, then you do C. There is no flexibility about accomplishing the tasks. In addition, you have a "GPS" that always points you toward your next objective. The combination of the linear game play and the GPS sometimes creates a feeling that you are trapped in a maze with not much control of what is happening. Had the game been designed with more flexibility, it would be truly awesome. As it is, it is an entertaining FPS with a generally satisfying assortment of weapons, teammates, explosives, and missions.

This game is amazing, they use the Unreal 2 Engine and OFX Physics engine. By using prexisting engines they are able to save time and work more on the game itself, there is no use reinventing the wheel, they use the best Physic/Graphics engines ever and add that with a good story-line and amazing TEAMPLAY ! that has to be the koolest part, the teamplay in this game is spectacular, everyone has their part in the team and is invaluable to the success of the mission.

(First, I`m Chilean, if my english is bad...well sorry), This game, is really good, you can use 2 guns, 2 machineguns, and the sound is incredible, but. The game is too stupid, the teammates are not the smartest dude on earth, but in 80% of FPS the teammates are bot`s, this game, but it if you don`t have a lot of money or you want to try something new. (New and pretty good.)

AS you have heard there are alot of bugs. But with the realease of many new patches the game is becoming alot more stable. THe graphics are top notch, you can add your own music and the online is alot of fun. Buy this game it is only 15 dollars. Its worth it the plot is cool and so is the whole atmosphere. I hope they come out with xpack. That cleans all bugs and what not. So far the patches are keeping me happy

If you're a fan of the Unreal engine and love realistic damage, weapons, and teamplay combat, this is for you. Almost everything is movable or explosive. Ragdoll physics is always a plus ;-) The graphics are about 2001'ish (so no problems with compatability) but is VERY detailed. Also, this game is EXTREMELY challenging (so this game might not be for everyone hence teamplay and flanking/outsmarting your enemies play an important role) so you will be forced to save almost after every firefight. It would have helped alot to have hotkeys instead of a non-pause pulldown order menu for your teammates, because firefights can end quickly in your death or a buddies, if you're not fast enough to give orders at the right times. Also, you know on alot of first person shooters how you can see only an arm or a leg sticking out of cover that you can shoot at? Well the A.I can do the same to you which is a pain in the butt sometimes being a very quick and cheap death. Overall, this should be in everyones cheap FPS library, and if not, you're missing out on a wonderfully put together game (with the patch)

Really bad game, but fun.,

This game is really bad, extremely buggy, and a complete rip-off of 3 games: Red Faction (bugs,"Antique Machine Gun", Red Faction 2 (everything can be duel, similar graphics), and Counter-Strike (purchasing system). The graphics are good, however, sounds of the guns/explosions are terrible, and the character body structure is too bulky. Don't buy Devastation unless you like amusing games that which are loaded with glitches and tile errors. And multiplayer isn't very good, either.
