A memory improvement book,
By Peter Amabile (Brisbane, Queensland Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Develop a Perfect Memory (Hardcover)
Dominic O'Brien developed his own system which uses (famous) people linked with numerals from 0-99. Foe example, he uses the digit 00 - as Olive Oyle, popeyes girlfriend. It is clever as it is different from the phonetic system which Buzan, Lorrayne and the like developed. He then links them together using the Loci system; a different location with a different person etc. If you a familiar with the phonetic system i.e 1 = t,d; 2 = n etc why change? Every memory improvement book uses word association and imagery and this book is no exception. Both need to be developed and practiced. It doesn't take one or two lessons to learn to play the piano, so why should memory improvement be any different?

Learn from the master!,

This review is from: How to Develop a Perfect Memory (Hardcover)
Dominic o'brien teaches how to memorise lists, languages, numbers, names, general facts and lots of other things. He explains how his simple methods transformed him from an absent minded dyslexic to the world memory champion. One of his feats include memorising 35 packs of cards in 35 seconds! much practice is needed to really use his techniques in every day life. however i managed to memorize all the american states and their capitals in one hour and all the american presidents and their period of office in 30 minutes. i did this without much practice. this book will improve your memory and concentration if practice the techniques he teaches.

In my opinion this is the best book on memory improvement that I've found, I've been studing memory training for few months and I can memorize 155 digits in 5 min, deck of cards in 2.5 min so I should know what I'm talking about .Dominic's system's are so easy and effective, his method for languages are just brilliant. His use of the journey technique is so logical and effective. My only wonder is why is this not taught in SCHOOLS????? So I have only one more thing to say try to find the book and buy it NOW!!!!!

One os the best memory books ever,
This review is from: How to Develop a Perfect Memory (Hardcover)
I have an e-book version of this book and it's very good. I memorized three phone numbers another day within 15 minutes and I memorized a patent number in under 5 minutes. I've gotten past the dominic system but now I've memorized all the cards characters and am about to try to memorize my journey to memorize a deck of cards. On my first try I got three cards correct. I'm going to buy how to pass exams by the same author and I'll do a review on it once I get to college.

Luckily for me..hehe...I found a copy in my local library.Even better value!

Best memory book I have found,

This review is from: How to Develop a Perfect Memory (Hardcover)
Dominic Obrien, revolutionized the way people memorize. 8 time world memory champion. He dominated the sport until others figured out how he did it.This is his most comprehensive book. It's goes in great detail and is a great read. The concepts are easy to understand, but many(like the number system) require a lot of practice. But if you do your homework, you will be able to do things like memorize hundreds of phone numbers, dates, decks of cards, binary numbers etc. It took me months to get the techique fast enough and familiar enough to use it. But well worth it. Even if you don't have world memory champ aspirations, a lot of the techniques are quite simple and can be used to improve everyday memory(task lists etc.) But for that kind of stuff his other(in print) books will do. It's a shame this book is out of print and selling for the outragious price of $199 used. Try to find it in a library or borrow it from someone(this book is very very hard to find though).

Convert everything into images instead of words and numbers,
This review is from: How to Develop a Perfect Memory (Hardcover)
Great book, but could have been shorter.
Basically, half way through the book, you'll learn the majority of the techniques used to develop a perfect memory. To develop perfect memory, the author teaches you to store and compress information in the form of unique images placed throughout a journey or stages. His reason being because it's much simpler to recall events, people, list of items and etc, when 2+ of your senses are involved and everything is converted into images instead of words and numbers. You have to practice the memory techniques in order to see improvements, so finishing this book is only half of the battle. As for me, the hardest part in the book deals with Dominic system, which is converting 0 - 99 into unique people and items for each number. But once that's done, everything else will come with ease. And you'll be on your way to becoming a memory champion.

A technique that really works,

This review is from: How to Develop a Perfect Memory (Hardcover)
I read this book back in the late 90's when a friend loaned it to me, i was impressed but i never had the patience to try and memorise the 100 characters and there actions who's initials go with the numbers.
Over 10 years later i started purchasing Dominic O'Briens books and was hooked. I have learnt all 100 names and the first time i tested memorising a deck of cards I got about 47 out of the pack correct. This is just one of the techniques in the book, but it 100% works if you put in the time to learn it. You also have to go over the things you memorise just like you would if you was studying for an exam. I used to know all the 50 US states and there capitals using his methods but because i never kept it up i forgot them all after a few months. I have most of Dominics books but i agree with the other poster, i think it's outrageous that this is selling for $200 some places. I think they need to re-publish this. I must say if you cannot afford this book, order Dominic's CD series Quantum Memory Power. All the techniqes which are in this book Dominic explains in great detail in his CD series. I would much prefer the CD series than pay $200 for this. I have to say a personal thankyou to Dominic if he ever reads this stuff. Your books are a real inspiration, if only i knew this technique when i was at school.

If you want to improve your memory, read this book.,

Simply put, if you want to improve your memory, I recommend that you read this book. It contains simple methods that you can use straight away and which I find work. It also contains methods for memory improvement which require some once-off preparation to help remember numbers. Once this is done, however, its just about invaluable.I use the methods in this book with increasing regularity after reading it about 3 months ago. I can remember long lists of items e.g. shopping lists. I am beginning to build up my mental telephone directory. I have even learned the entire 20th century calendar which does have some practical uses as well as being a party trick. This book is easy to read, enjoyable, and if you actually do what is suggested, will painlessly improve your ability to memorize details. What more can I say?

Not the usual 'boring self-development' genre,
By gdempsey@tinet.ie (Eire) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Develop a Perfect Memory (Hardcover)
While visiting relatives in Sydney, I saw this book on a shelf and thought to myself, "ah, the usual book to help insomnia". However, as I browsed through it, I was fascinated by its contents. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get it anywhere since and Amazon.com have been unable to find it as well, which is a pity. The author has an outstanding memory but he states that this is due to the way he uses it than to any natural ability. There are some very clever techniques in the book and interesting stories about his experiences in being banned from casinos due to his ability to remember cards. My particular favourite is his technique to assist in remembering the gender of nouns when learning French or Italian etc. He visualises all the masculine words in one room and all the feminine nouns in another. O'Brien is some sort of World Champ at recounting Pi. Definitely worth a read, if you can get your hands on a copy of it. |
