Book Description

HTTP is the protocol of the web, and this book will look at HTTP
from a web developer's perspective. We'll cover resources, messages,
cookies, and authentication protocols. We'll look at how HTTP clients
can use persistent and parallel connections to improve performance,
and see how the web scales to meet demand using cache headers and
proxy servers. By the end of the book you will have the knowledge to
build better web applications and web services.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great mix of technical details and best practices November 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After I've read the book, I could only wish I had it the moment I started web development. Even after going through Flask tutorials, different blogs, some sporadic blog articles, slashing through RFCs, and such for a whole year, I still haven't had a clear overview of what's going on, and this book changed it for the better.

What I find most tedious in my professional carrier is to pass the threshold when learning something new. That threshold divides the state of being productive (thus, having fun), and the state of trying to wrap my head around new conceptual landscape, and with crazy schedules it's really hard to give oneself enough time to chew on a subject. I believe this book is a really effective shortcut to surpassing that threshold.

One other reason I chose this book is because it contains only transferable knowledge, which is quite important for anyone on a tight schedule with some sense for self-development planning. There is only one working code example written in C# which I could easily translate to Java and Python. Everything else is a mix of concepts, best practices, and well-chosen technical details.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for understanding the basics and then some! December 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've been a developer for over 12 years and find that there are still a lot of the basic, underlying technologies that I either forgot or never really understood as good as I think a developer should. Scott Allen does a great job with this book teaching you the things you need to know as a developer, but also keeps the conversation at a level that non developers can understand if they just want to get a basic idea of how our amazing internet and web sites work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Maybe a little too basic June 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was hoping to get a lot more out of this book than it delivered. It does cover the basics of HTTP and a little history, but the meaning of all the verbs, a more in depth treatment of the response codes and how they are used would have been welcome.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great way to understand the basics of the protocol July 26, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This short overview of HTTP is a great way to understand the basics of the protocol.
However I would recommend further reading about specific topics for more details.
E.g. the most used HTTP status codes are only briefly described.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing and concise February 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've been a web developer for just over a year and had no idea how the web actually worked. This book explains the under lying methodology of the internet in bite sized chunks that are super easy to read. I'm recommending this book to every web dev that I know!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good starting point February 28, 2013

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A real good starting point with basic explained in detail. Btw, this more is a copy of "HTTP pocket reference" and if you have this already, there's nothing new in this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Quick Overview of the HTTP Protocol September 14, 2014
By darryl
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As an experienced software / game programmer who wanted to expand his breadth a bit and learn about this "web app" world, this was an excellent basic overview of the HTTP protocol to help you fill any holes in what you may believe it is and isn't.

There isn't much here in regard to how to "use" this information but that's not what this book set out to do. It's a great jumping off point to find other topics to research.
