A NOTE ON THIS MANUAL

The National MultiCultural Institute (NMCI) is pleased to offer this comprehensive manual for developing and delivering a one-day workshop on Valuing Cultural Diversity in the Workplace.

This easy-to-use guide contains a wide range of training materials and training tips and an extensive listing of resource references. It is designed so that individual lecturettes can be used with different exercises, simulations, videos, and role-plays in order to tailor the workshop to meet specific training goals.

Cultural diversity refers to a wide range of differences among people, including race, gender, ethnicity, religion, national origin, social status, age, sexual orientation, and physical/mental impairment. When using such terms as "culturally diverse" or "culturally different" in this manual, we intend to include all these differences.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT THIS MANUAL

1. Who is this manual designed for? 2. This manual is designed for the trainer who: a. Has significant training experience in areas other than diversity (i.e., has strong, professional group process and facilitation skills); b. Has little experience in designing and conducting cultural diversity workshops; c. Has, as a participant, done personal awareness work in the area of cultural sensitivity in order to identify, confront, and come to terms with his or her own cultural biases. Without this kind of self-understanding, a trainer can be trapped into explosive situations in which emotions cannot be handled.

2. What is the objective of this manual?

The objective of this training manual is to introduce trainers to the fundamentals of designing and delivering a one-day workshop on Valuing Diversity in the Workplace. Valuing Diversity workshops attempt to help participants understand, appreciate, and work together more productively with all their cultural differences.

This manual is not designed to introduce trainers to the fundamentals of managing diversity in the workplace. Please note also that the manual always deals with diversity issues in the United States. International multicultural issues are not addressed.

3. What will the manual cover?

Users will be introduced to: a. Design rationale/strategy b. Elements of a one-day workshop on Valuing Cultural Diversity: • Lecturettes • Exercises • Simulations • Videos • Handout materials • Bibliographies c. Facilitation skills in dealing with participant anger, denial, heated discussions, and inappropriate comments d. Issues to be aware of when working in a diverse team of trainers

4. What will the manual not cover?

The manual will not cover the following topics: a. Pre-workshop activities, such as how to convince management to offer the training for employees; how to do an organizational assessment; how to run employee focus groups, etc. b. Designs for two-, three-, or four-day workshops (although users can design a shorter workshop from the information in the manual) c. Information on how to do systems change, such as transforming the entire organizational culture d. How to evaluate training e. Follow-up activities
