Book Description

March 15, 2002
Developing an Effective Safety Culture implements a simple philosophy, namely that working safely is a cultural issue. An effective safety culture will eventually lead to the desired goal of zero incidents in the work place, and this book will provide an understanding of what is needed to reach this goal. The authors present reference material for all phases of building a safety management system and ultimately developing a safety program that fits the culture.

This volume offers the most comprehensive approach to developing an effective safety culture. Information is easily accessible as the authors move first through, understanding the cost of incidents, then to perspectives and descriptions of management systems, principal management leadership traits, establishing and evaluating goals and objectives, providing visible leadership, and assigning required responsibilities. In addition, you are given the means to systematically identifying hazards and develop your own hazard inventory and control system.

Further information on OSHA requirements for training, behavior-based safety processes, and the development of a job hazard analysis for each task is available as well. Valuable case studies, from the authors' own experience in the industry, are used throughout to demonstrate the concepts presented.

* Provides the tools to rebuild or enhance a desired safety culture
* Allows you to identify a program that will fit your specific application
* Examines different philosophies in relation to safety culture development

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is so full of information and practical suggestions that you will be constantly highlighting important passages or taking copious notes on new things that you can try in your own workplace...

"This is a terrific book for beginners, students but most of all those managers who think they know it all. This book reminds us all clearly that a safety culture is attainable by cutting through a lot of the sales spin, and it provides us with the information and tools to do so.

...use this book as a good skeleton on which to hang your customized safety management system, or safety culture initiatives.

-Kevin Jones, Editor, Safety at Work Magazine, July 2003

5.0 out of 5 stars Safety Management Basics, August 24, 2008

This review is from: Developing an Effective Safety Culture: A Leadership Approach (Hardcover)
Overall the text is quite good in explaining safety management concepts which are highly effective.

I believe it would make a good text for a safety management course.

The book gets into some topics that aren't needed to explain the concepts presented making the text larger than necessary. There is some redundancy of information in the way the text is structured / written.

I purchased additional copies for clients.

Definitely a worthwhile read for safety managers without a business systems background or managers needing to understand how to insert safety management aspects into an existing performance management process. A good review of some basic concepts that many fail to properly implement.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource, August 8, 2006

This review is from: Developing an Effective Safety Culture: A Leadership Approach (Hardcover)
Author Roughton's book is remarkably clear and concise, affording a comprehensive perspective on the context and content of an effective safety culture.
Those interested in creating such a culture will understand that the emphasis on safety must become an integral part of the organization from top management to the operating worker. This book describes the path to that end, as opposed to simply describing a tool to be used and set aside.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comments from Student Columbia Southern College, April 27, 2011
This review is from: Developing an Effective Safety Culture: A Leadership Approach (Hardcover)
I was recently advised that my "Safety Culture Book, Developing an Effective Safety Culture: A Leadership Approach", was being used at Columbia Southern College. I asked for a review of the book and the following was an email that I received from the student and I wanted share what he said.

"James,

I had emailed you that I was using your text book for my Columbia Southern class and you requested some feedback on the book.

The material was very interesting and educational. Using the book and other resources I was fortunate enough to receive an A in the class.

At first I was annoyed with references to all of the tables, figures, and appendix references. But I progressed through the course they became invaluable to my studies. Especially to answer some of the end of chapter tests, the answers were within the "tables, figures, and appendix." So, thank you.

My one criticism is that during review and research through the book I easily became lost. I would suggest on the next edition the chapter numbers be placed at the top of one of the opposing pages, it would make review a bit easier. I suppose I could have written the chapter numbers myself, but I don't write in exceptionally written and crafted books (I take notes).

Again thank you for the book and its well written material. I also want to express my appreciation for your efforts to introduce safety through social media--your LinkedIn projects are very good.
