5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most intelligent soccer books I have ever read, April 29, 2011
By
Matthew E. Keller (Mesa, AZ United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Developing Game Intelligence in Soccer (Paperback)
I have played soccer for 34 years, and coached for about 10, and like anyone who has played a sport for that long you develop instincts. Things that you do automatically during a game. However, sometimes it is not until somebody puts those instincts into words that you finally realize exactly why you do those things and even become better at them. This book is exactly that. It has some great concepts that I had never heard of before, but that are so true that once somebody states them you say "Of course!". Here are some examples:

Channeling: This is the way that a defender squeezes a dribbler into the side line. You basically contain them and then give them a little more room on the side you want them to go to. Eureka!

Dribbling: There are two reasons to dribble the ball. 1) To move the ball to the goal 2) To escape from pressure and give yourself some room to do what you want with it. Of course!

I think even if you never want to read through the drills. The conceptual opening chapters of each section are worth the money alone.

Want to win at soccer? Play with your brain.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Decent, But Not Really About "Game Intelligence", March 23, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Developing Game Intelligence in Soccer (Paperback)
I was fooled by the preview of this book. I was looking for a that would help me develop my players' awareness, quick thought processes, and understanding of the game. This book is NOT that.

This book is more "understanding the flow and strategies of the game".

Pros:

- Very "pretty" book with almost all pages in color

- Lots of drills with GREAT graphics and explanations for each one

- A couple very useful diagrams like the one on scoring percentages by area of the field

- Some good bullet points for different areas of the game

Cons:

- Many of the drills are found in many other places including free websites

- MAINLY, it's not really about game intelligence

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for all coach levels, August 3, 2009
This review is from: Developing Game Intelligence in Soccer (Paperback)
This book is a very good coaching tool for a new coach and even a veteran coach looking for new drills and exercises. I enjoy the approach to teaching Game Sense rather than just drilling. Pictures and diagrams are easy to understand. Drill descriptions are also nicely detailed. I highly recommend checking this book out.
