"Beyond Experience" is a book full of different activites to be used in an intercultural training session. One of its very useful features is a full outline of a training design, with timeframe included, which incorporates the activities mentioned in subsequent pages. Trainers with more experience can use this as a base, bringing in other relevant material.
The training activities described tend to fall more on the "culture-general" instead of "culture-specific" side, and are mainly designed for U.S. participants who are planning on traveling or living abroad, or are in contact with other cultures in the United States. The activities are also mainly for those who have limited exposure to other ways of thinking and perceiving the world. Through examining U.S. proverbs and the values that are held by the participants, the aim of the activities is to challenge assumptions and pave the way for a more successful intercultural experience.

I teach Intercultural Communication at an urban college, and I use the activities and case studies in this book quite a lot in my classroom. The book includes exercises, role-play activities, ideas for teaching and discussion, and case studies. I use the activities from this book more than any other my shelf.

The case studies at the back of the book take real situations from Americans living in other countries, such as as Peace Corps volunteers and businesspeople. So the case studies are "culture-specific" (and include Afghanistan, Korea, Japan, Columbia, India, Philippines, England, Germany, and so on), but these specific cultures help teach or illuminate "culture-general" theories, such as high-context/low-context, power distance, etc.

Another favorite activity from this book that I use in the classroom are the common stereotypes that non-Americans have of Americans. The book has several pages of narratives from "foreigners" living in the U.S. about their impressions of Americans. It is a good exercise for guiding students away from ethnocentrism and allowing them to see how "alien" Americans are to people from other cultures.
